Gunners told, ‘hands off our WC star’

German giants Werder Bremen have told Arsenal to forget about signing Per Mertesacker. The lanky centre-back had an outstanding World Cup helping Germany finish third in South Africa. The Gunners are believed to be preparing a £10m bid for the 25-year-old. But on Wednesday, Werder general manager Klaus Allofs issued a firm hands-off to the North Londoners. "Per is 100 percent for Werder. I have already said several times. Nothing has changed,” said Allofs. "He and his advisers have so far not reported for training after the World Cup due to a request from us." Arsenal are desperate to shore up their defence following the exits of William Gallas, Sol Campbell, Philippe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre in the close season. They have also been linked to Everton defender Phil Jagielka.
