Fergie hails Sweat Pea
(30-09-2010) Javier Hernandez has had his “natural goal scoring instincts” hailed by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. This comes after the Mexican netted a well-taken 85th-minute goal for the Red Devils in their 1-0 win over Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday. "When he takes a chance it is like shelling peas to him. It is so natural to him. He is a natural finisher,” commented Fergie after the match at the Mestalla. "But he is young and needs to build on his strength, which he has been doing in the gym.” Hernandez, nicknamed Chicharito or 'Little Pea' because of his green eyes, joined United for £7m from Guadalajara in the summer.
‘Six months to make City world beaters’
(30-09-2010) Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has pleaded for patience if he is to turn the big spending club into world beaters. Speaking ahead of the Blues clash with Juventus in the Europa League on Thursday, Mancini said it would take another six months to shape Manchester City into his own image. "I think we can create a special team in six months. We need time to improve day by day to change the mentality. We must start winning consistently. That is important,” commented the Italian, before raising the stakes by suggesting the EPL was stronger than Serie A. "I think the English championship is better than the Italian. They need to bring some big players back. They are not there at the moment."
Reds gunning for Europa League glory
(30-09-2010) Liverpool are firmly focused on winning the Europa League following their loss to minnows Northampton in the Carling Cup last week. That embarrassing setback realistically reduced their chances of landing a trophy this season to two, in Europe and the FA Cup, after another cool start to their EPL campaign. The Reds play Dutch team Utrecht on Thursday in the Europa League. "Our priorities have been to do the best in every competition," said Hodgson ahead of the match. "Although these days I will be accused on not doing that because people will say the weakened team I played against Northampton was not the team to win the game." He added: "We saw Utrecht beat Celtic 4-0 so are under no illusions that we are playing a very good team and we will have to be very good if we are to get a result from the game."
Nando set to explode – Red Roy
(30-09-2010) Roy Hodgson expects star striker Fernando Torres to explode into action against Dutch team Utrecht in the Europa League on Thursday. Spanish star Torres has had a disappointing start to the season, scoring a single goal for the Merseysiders. However, there were glimpses of a return to the form that made him the most feared striker in the EPL in the Red’s match against Sunderland last Saturday. “He has been behind the last four goals we have scored, so I don't think there's anything wrong with his confidence,” insisted Hodgson on Wednesday. "Yes, he'd like to have that goal. Everyone knows goalscorers thrive on them. The thing with top goalscorers, though, is you know it will come again.” He added: "I think the injury problems are behind him now. I wouldn't dream of playing him if he wasn't right."
City in for 'the new Messi' and other red-hot gossip
(30-09-2010) Manchester City are on the brink of snapping up Israeli playmaker Gail Assulin. Dubbed 'the new Lionel Messi' earlier in his career, the 19-year-old Assulin has cancelled his contract with Barcelona and is available on a free transfer. Elsewhere, Manchester United have been linked to £16m-rated midfielder Steven Defour of Belgian side Racing Genk; Inter Milan and Manchester United could cross swords because both clubs are chasing Aalesund goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard; Liverpool will fight it out with Serie A club Napoli for Auxerre's Slovenian playmaker Valter Birsa; and Manchester City are weighing up £15m-rated Sporting Gijon defender Jose Angel.

United suffer Roo blow
(29-09-2010) Manchester United have been rocked by the news that star striker Wayne Rooney will be out for three weeks with an ankle injury. The 24-year-old has suffered a poor start to the season, scoring a single goal (via the penalty spot) and was substituted in the second half of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Bolton after getting injured. The 24-year-old is definitely out of United's trip to Valencia for a Champions League clash on Wednesday as well Saturday's league game at Sunderland and England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro. To compound matters, the Red Devils must also do without Paul Scholes for 10 days due to a calf problem.
Wenger salutes ‘Flappyhandski’
(29-09-2010) Arsene Wenger has praised goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski for a “faultless” display against Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday. The much maligned Pole, nicknamed Flappyhandski by the Gunners faithful, helped Arsenal down the Serbian side 3-1 to maintain a 100% start in Group H. "Fabianski had a good game, we have seen the player tonight who we see in training. He had a faultless game," said the Arsenal boss. "I know it is in him. He got it out in the game tonight and hopefully that will give him the belief and confidence he needs." Wenger added: "I am confident he will come out as a great 'keeper, I have always said that. We have to keep confidence in him and he needs to gain experience from games like this."
Smoking Lennon could be in trouble
(29-09-2010) Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon is fighting to save his career from going up in smoke. This comes after the England international was pictured on The Sun's front page puffing on a big cigar with his England team-mates after their World Cup exit. The image suggested that the 23-year-old was none too pulsed by his country’s disappointing display in South Africa. He has subsequently not featured in any of Fabio Capello’s England squad as his form has waned. "Aaron's not playing like he did last year, that's for sure,” commented Spurs boss Harry Redknapp on Wednesday. Regarding the newspaper picture, Redknapp added: "Someone told me there was a picture of him with a big cigar in his mouth, although I never saw it. If he smokes too many of those he'll lose his speed and then he'll be in trouble."
Gunners new boy loving English life
(29-09-2010) New Arsenal signing Laurent Koscielny is loving life in England. The 25-year-old Frenchman joined the Gunners from Lorient in the summer and has made an assured start to his EPL career. "My career has totally changed in three months,’ commented the defender on Tuesday. "It is going pretty well even if my game is still not 100 per cent. It is a big challenge for me but I am getting better physically. I do a lot of weight training to strengthen me.” Regarding the English game, he added: "It is much more physical in the tackle, the attackers are rougher and the games are more intense." Koscielny cost Arsenal a reported £8.5m.
Everton star on Juve’s radar and other red-hot gossip
(29-09-2010) Everton star Steven Pienaar is on the radar of Serie A giants Juventus. The South African international is free to talk to foreign clubs from 1 January after failing to agree a new deal at Goodison Park. The 28-year-old was the Toffees Player of Year last season. Elsewhere, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has warned the club's fans that the team needs "three to six months before you see improvements”; Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas says he is close to quitting the club because he can’t get a game under manager Harry Redknapp; Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has told young midfielder Adam Johnson he must work harder to earn his place back in the Blues starting XI; and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is building a nightclub under Stamford Bridge, complete with a £150,000 waterfall at the entrance.

Tighten up now – Vidic
(28-09-2010) Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has called on his teammates to tighten up at the back if they want to be serious title contenders this season. The Red Devils leaked another two goals against Bolton on Sunday due to defensive errors with Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra the culprits in the 2-2 draw. The result meant United were unable to take advantage of Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City on Saturday. "It is a big concern that we are conceding so many away goals," said Vidic on Monday. "We have to stop doing it. We cannot let it happen again." He added: "Over the last few years we haven't given that many goals away or even allowed them so many chances. Before we have always looked strong, so this is not what we are used to.” United trail EPL leaders Chelsea by three points.
Flappy Handski set for Gunners start
(28-09-2010) An elbow injury to Manuel Almunia has forced Arsene Wenger to give Arsenal’s second gaff-prone goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski a chance to prove that he has what it takes to become the club’s first choice glovesman when they take on Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday. Nicknamed ‘Flappy Handski’ by Gunners fans, the bumbling Pole’s last outing in Europe saw his howlers gift Porto two goals in a 2-1 away loss in February. "Fabianski is ready. I don't have any concerns,” said Wenger on Monday. "Fabianski made mistakes at Porto but he can show he has learned from that." Almunia, meanwhile, made bad mistakes to gift two goals to West Brom in Arsenal’s 3-2 shock loss on Saturday. Fabianski now has the chance to nail down a starting position.
Ancelotti has no regrets releasing big names
(28-09-2010) Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is confident his high-riding side can conquer Europe this season despite their failure to land any big names in the transfer market. The Blues go into Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Marseille short of experience with Didier Drogba suspended and Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and Yossi Benayoun all injured. This means the Stamford Bridgers will have a bench made up of youngsters Josh McEachran, Jeffrey Bruma, Gael Kakuta and Fabio Borini. But Ancelotti insists he has no regrets releasing the likes of Michael Ballack, Ricardo Carvalho, Joe Cole, Deco and Juliano Belletti in the summer. "One minute people are telling me my squad is full of old players and now they say we are too young and have no experience,” commented the Italian on Monday. "It is normal to have two or three injuries in the season and this is not a problem for us.”
Torres going nowhere – Kuyt
(28-09-2010) Fernando Torres will definitely not be leaving Liverpool, claims the Spaniard’s Dutch teammate Dirk Kuyt. Rumours have been circulating that Torres is in a bad state of mind and is desperate for a move away from Anfield. His form has also dipped and he has only scored once all season. "Everyone is expecting goals from Fernando but he offers a lot more. Against Sunderland he was responsible for setting up the two goals," commented Kuyt on Monday. "He is very important for the team even if he is not scoring goals. I'm sure his goals will come.” Added the 26-year-old: "His mood has never changed. If you are a striker, and the type of striker Fernando is, you want to be involved in goals.” Liverpool's last four goals have come from assists from Torres.
Serie A giants after Liverpool star and other red-hot gossip
(28-09-2010) AC Milan are allegedly planning a £35m swoop for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard during the January transfer window. According to reports the Serie A giants see the inspirational midfielder as just the man to help them close the gap on archrivals Inter Milan. Elsewhere, Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez has caught the eye of Arsenal, who are prepared to offer error-prone Manuel Almunia in part-exchange; Spanish club Malaga are eyeing out-of-favour Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva in January; tough Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross has emerged as a surprise January transfer window target for Juventus; and Emmanuel Adebayor could call time on his Manchester City career with both Inter Milan and AC Milan keen to take him to Italy in January.

Roo’s confidence is shot – Keagan
(27-09-2010) Football legend Kevin Keagan believes a total loss of confidence is behind Wayne Rooney’s alarming lack of form. Rooney has only scored a single goal all season which was from the penalty spot. Keagan watched Rooney plod around the field in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Bolton on Sunday before he was eventually substituted after 61 minutes. “His performance at Bolton tells me his confidence is shot." commented Keagan after the game. "Manchester United are minus Wayne Rooney at the moment. It's a different Wayne Rooney this year. It's not the same. It's like chalk and cheese. They need Wayne Rooney firing on all cylinders.”
Mancini still backs Chelsea to be champions
(27-09-2010) Chelsea remain favourites to win the league despite their loss to Manchester City on Saturday, reckons Roberto Mancini. The Italian’s City team edged the reigning EPL champions 1-0 at Eastlands on Saturday to end their unbeaten start to the season. "I still think they will win it easily because I think they are the best team in the Premier League," he said afterwards. "It is not possible for them to score five goals every game. Sometimes you might get a result like this. But they are the better team."
Spurs to go for broke in CL
(27-09-2010) Harry Redknapp wants Tottenham to go for broke against FC Twente in the Champions League on Wednesday – because they have a defensive crisis! Spurs currently only have two fully-fit centre-backs - Sebastien Bassong and Vedran Corluka - ahead of the clash at White Hart Lane. Ledley King’s ongoing knee troubles make him a doubt for the clash with the Dutch champions, while Michael Dawson (ankle), William Gallas (groin), and Younes Kaboul (calf) are all out. "We have to go for it. Winning the game is all-important and it will set us up nicely,” said Redknapp on Sunday. "The group is wide open with one point each. Inter Milan are obviously the favourites but after that, it's wide open.” Spurs drew their opening Group A match with Werder Bremen.
United legend out for two weeks
(27-09-2010) Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is set for two weeks on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury at Bolton on Sunday. The Welsh winger limped off during the Red Devils 2-2 draw at the Reebok Stadium and is set to miss Wednesday's Champions League tie at Valencia and Saturday's EPL game at Sunderland. "It is a hamstring and I am afraid he will be out for a couple of weeks," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told ESPN. A question mark also hangs over Wayne Rooney’s fitness after he picked up an ankle knock in the same game. "Wayne Rooney had a bit of a knock," confirmed assistant manager Mike Phelan. "He has a little issue with his ankle. We don't know how serious it is. We will have a look in the morning but we think he will be OK for Wednesday.”
Reds in for Magpies winger and other red-hot gossip
(27-09-2010) Liverpool are considering a January move for Newcastle United winger Wayne Routledge. According to reports, Roy Hodgson will move for the 25-year-old if he gets enough funds from the Anfield board. Routledge is a former England u-21 international and has played for Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Aston Villa and QPR in his career. Elsewhere, Manchester United are tracking Italian international Claudio Marchisio, with a view to making a move for the 24-year-old Juventus midfielder next summer; Arsenal are keen to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon in January for £7m in the wake of Manuel Almunia's poor performance in their defeat by West Brom; and Tottenham are monitoring Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano amid rumours the Brazil star has fallen out with club coach Antonio Alvarez.

Gaff-prone ‘keeper still backed by Wenger
(26-09-2010) Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger continued to back gaff-prone goalkeeper Manuel Almunia in the wake of the Gunners surprise 3-2 home loss to West Brom on Saturday. Almunia conceded a first-half penalty but then saved the spot-kick only to spill Gonzalo Jara's shot into the net in the 52nd minute as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead. "I don't think it was down to one player," commented Wenger afterwards. "I think our level of focus on the job was not right.” He added: "I believe you can include all the defenders as well. They all made massive mistakes so it would not be right to blame one player more than any other.” Samir Nasri scored two late goals for the Gunners to give Wenger's side some hope.
Torres will fire again soon – Kuyt
(26-09-2010) Liverpool ace Fernando Torres will soon be hitting the back of the net regularly, according to the Spaniard’s Dutch team-mate Dirk Kuyt. World Cup winner Torres has scored just once in the EPL this season. “Everyone is expecting goals from Fernando but he offers a lot more,” said Kuyt on Saturday following the Merseysider’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland. “His mood has never changed. If you are a striker, and the type of striker Fernando is, you want to be involved in goals. But everyone could see how happy he was to have set up two goals.” Added Kuyt: “When you are one of the world's best strikers everyone is watching you so if they get a moment to blame him they will. But we all know next week he could score a hat-trick and then everything changes.
Naming Tevez skipper was masterstroke – Mancini
(26-09-2010) Naming Carlos Tevez club captain was a masterstroke, claimed Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini after the little Argentine netted the winner in the Blues 1-0 win over EPL leaders Chelsea on Saturday. “Tevez is a fantastic striker and he's a fighter. Against tall players, against big players, he never gives up. He leads by example," said Mancini after the match at Eastlands. Tevez has now scored four times in the EPL since being named City skipper. After wrecking Chelsea's 100 per cent record with a well taken goal, Tevez unveiled a T-shirt birthday greeting to his mother.
Red Devils confirm interest in Chilean sensation
(26-09-2010) Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that the club are interested in Chile striker Alexis Sanchez. The 22-year-old, who currently plays for Serie A team Udinese, caught the eye at the World Cup in South Africa. "We have looked at Sanchez and he has impressed us," said Ferguson on Saturday. "As have other players. "He has had very good games and is an interesting project. We have gathered some background, as with other footballers at his level, but nothing more than this - for the moment."
Barca ready to land Rooney and other red-hot gossip
(26-09-2010) Barcelona are plotting an escape route for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. According to reports, the Catalans will offer the England striker a mega-deal in the hope that it might lure him away from England where his every move is in the spotlight. Elsewhere, Real Madrid are prepared to offer Tottenham £13m and midfielder Lassana Diarra in exchange for left-back Gareth Bale; Arsenal are to revive their summer interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina as manager Arsene Wenger loses patience with incumbent glovesman Manuel Almunia; and Chelsea are ready to do battle with Italian side Juventus in their pursuit of £32m-rated Brazilian attacker Neymar.

Owen confident of more game time
(25-09-2010) Michael Owen is determined to secure more game time at Manchester United. After netting two goals in the Red Devils 5-2 win over Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, the former England ace said he was sure he would feature more in the coming months as the club’s heavy schedule took its toll. "We've played weekend-weekend-weekend and then into a double-header international break so the manager's kept a similar team through those three games,” said Owen on Thursday. "Subsequently there's been a lot of us that haven't played in the first month of the season but now the Champions League's started, the League Cup's started and there are Premier League games all the time so I'd like to think there's going to be plenty of games coming thick and fast.” Prior to Wednesday’s match, Owen had managed only 46 minutes of action since the Community Shield in August.
Wenger optimistic about renewed success
(25-09-2010) Such has been Arsenal’s impressive form this season, that manager Arsene Wenger is really optimistic that the club can finally break their trophy drought. The Gunners have not won anything since the 2005 FA Cup. Since then they have moved to a new stadium, but the Frenchman insists that that has nothing to do with the blanks they have fired for the last six years. "I believe it is never easy to move to a new stadium. The first plan for us was to stay at the top level of competition and we managed that," said Wenger on Thursday. "I believe it is a bit simplistic as well to say that we have no trophies, like the club has not existed in the last five years. If you look at the index of UEFA, we are in the top eight seeded clubs. We have been in the Champions League semi-final and final during that period and we have always managed to play at the top.”
Everton’s woe continues as Saha’s return is delayed
(25-09-2010) Everton will have to do without striker Louis Saha for another three weeks. The Toffees’ top goalscorer last season has been out of action since their defeat at Aston Villa almost a month ago. Since then David Moyes side have struggled and currently languish second from bottom of the EPL after a dismal start to the season. "He goes to a facility in France to get treatment and looked after and I think it will be two to three weeks before he is available," confirmed Moyes on Thursday. And in a further blow to the club, forward Victor Anichebe has been forced to undergo surgery to repair a troublesome knee injury. The 22-year-old Nigerian has not featured this season due to the problem.
Another Hargreaves comeback mooted
(25-09-2010) Crocked Manchester United ace Owen Hargreaves could be on the verge of a comeback. The England midfielder has not played for two years due to chronic knee knack. Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday that Hargreaves was back in training and looking to build his fitness ahead of a potential return. "He trained yesterday with the first team and looked very good,” said Fergie. "I was surprised actually how good he was looking. It's an extra string to our bow. Bringing him in at this time, after being out for so long, obviously we'll have to monitor him and see how he's going to progress in the next few weeks. But it's good to see him back.” United paid Bayern Munich £18m for Hargreaves four years ago.
City set to break bank to bag Torres and other red-hot gossip
(25-09-2010) Manchester City are plotting a £50m January bid to bag Fernando Torres. According to reports, City will exploit Liverpool’s tight financial position by making an offer for the Spanish World Cup winner that the club’s owners can’t refuse. Torres has also been a pale shadow of himself this season, with many suggesting that he is unhappy at Anfield. Elsewhere, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are tracking Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, and are set to offer £17m; Tottenham have agreed a £1.5m deal to sign South African defender Bongani Khumalo from Supersport United; Liverpool are looking to buy Tottenham duo Roman Pavlyuchenko and Giovani dos Santos targeted; and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looked at 19-year-old Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea while on a trip to Spain to check on Valencia, the Red Devils next Champions League opponents.
Roo must face his problems – Fergie
(24-09-2010) Wayne Rooney must man-up and face his personal problems, insists Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. Breaking his silence on the scandal that has erupted since a tabloid revealed details of Rooney’s dalliances with a prostitute while wife Coleen was pregnant, Fergie says the 24-year-old can’t hide anymore if he wants to save his marriage and resurrect his career. "I don't believe Wayne has a confidence problem. The boy is finally starting to realise what kind of focus is on him as a human being,” commented the Scot on Thursday. "The boy can't turn without a camera being on him but for a young person, that is not what you want.” Rooney has scored one goal this season (from the penalty spot) as his form has dipped. "You want to play and enjoy your football without that attention to you as it can be quite exhausting," he added.
‘Different and funny’ Tevez to blitz Chelsea
(24-09-2010) Carlos Tevez will blitz Chelsea on Saturday to show the world that Manchester City are real contenders for league honours this season, claims Shaun Wright-Phillips. City did the double over the Stamford Bridgers last season, with Tevez bagging three goals. “Last season Carlos gave them a really tough time,” said Wright-Phillips on Thursday. "And he's going to do that again, definitely. He's really settled in at this club now.” Wright-Phillips, also said the Argentine was revelling in his new role as club captain. "The lads are really enjoying having him as captain and he's enjoying it. He's quite different and quite funny. But the main thing is he really looks out for the lads. If we need things doing he gets it sorted and that's a positive thing."
No need to panic just yet – Stevie G
(24-09-2010) Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard doesn’t believe it is time to press the panic button at Anfield just yet. The Merseysiders are currently languishing in 16th place on the EPL standings after one win and two loses in their opening five matches of the season under new manager Roy Hodgson. The Reds also suffered the humiliation of being bundled out of the Carling Cup in midweek by League Two side Northampton. "There's a bit of doom and gloom about that goes with a few negative results," Gerrard told The Daily Mirror newspaper on Friday. "We've had them against Manchester United and going out against Northampton. But we've only had one seventh of the season, so it's crazy to panic.” He added: "The important thing is to stay together. Two or three good, positive results will change the mood, lifts the cloud and then everyone will be looking forward again.”
Fergie dismisses City and Reds threat
(24-09-2010) Manchester United’s biggest threats this season remain Chelsea and Arsenal, claims Sir Alex Ferguson. Writing off the chances of the Red Devils' much hated rivals Liverpool and Manchester City as well as Tottenham, Fergie said: "United, Arsenal and Chelsea started the season reasonably well and will all be there at the end of the season. It remains to be seen if Tottenham can break into top four again but the top three are the strongest right now." And while the fiery Scot believes Chelsea couldn’t have hoped for a better fixture list to kick the season off with, he acknowledges that the Blues will be United’s most formidable challengers. "I think Chelsea chose the calendar - it's been a quite amazing start of the season. You still have to beat those teams and they have. Anyone who wins the league will have to finish above Chelsea."
Big guns to return for Reds
(24-09-2010) Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is set to recall his big guns - the likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Joe Cole and Jose Reina – for Saturday in the hope they can lift the gloom against Sunderland at Anfield. This follows the club’s humiliating Carling Cup defeat to League Two team Northampton in midweek. "Basically there are 12 or 13 players, if you take Fabio Aurelio who didn't play against Northampton, and they are the more famous names,” insisted Hodgson on Friday. "The fans know we took a risk playing a totally different team and I don't think they will see it any differently to the way I saw it. We didn't lose against Northampton because we were casual in our approach or we were lethargic in our play, we lost because we defended poorly and we didn't use the ball well enough with the possession we had."

Gunners must end trophy drought soon – Rosicky
(23-09-2010) Arsenal star Tomas Rosicky believes it is crucial that the Gunners end their trophy drought soon – even if it is just the Carling Cup. The North Londoners have now gone almost six years without any silverware but following a 4-1 winner over Tottenham in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, expectation is again growing at the Emirates. "It is important to end the trophy drought because we haven't won anything for a long time. You can see the boss is going for it," said the 29-year-old Czech. "I came in 2006 and have won nothing yet. I came here to win trophies, so let's go for it in style." Arsenal have not lifted a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup final, which was played in Cardiff.
Kuszczak weighing up his options at United
(23-09-2010) Manchester United reserve goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak is ready to follow Ben Foster out of the Old Trafford exit door. The Pole, who made his 53rd appearance for the Red Devils in Wednesdays’ Carling Cup tie against Scunthorpe, has seen former United ‘keeper Foster excel since moving to Birmingham in the summer and realises he may have to do the same. "I could understand Ben's position. He wanted to move because he wanted regular football and he wanted to play for England,” commented Kuszczak on Wednesday. "But if I don't get enough games I will have to do the same as Ben. The years are going by and I will be 29 after this season. I want to enjoy football and I want to play."
‘appy ‘arry blasts Arsenal star for diving
(23-09-2010) Harry Redknapp has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal winger Samir Nasri, accusing the Frenchman of diving. Nasri won the Gunners a penalty after going down in the box as Spurs succumbed 4-1 to bitter foes Arsenal after extra time in the Carling Cup on Tuesday. He went down under pressure from Sebastien Bassong but picked himself up to convert from 12 yards on 92 minutes, before notching his second spot-kick four minutes later after Steven Caulker tugged back Marouane Chamakh. "I thought the first penalty was harsh. He fell over. Really, I think he dived for the first penalty,” ranted Redknapp afterwards. "The second was blatant." A goal from Russian star Andrey Arshavin sealed the score line after the teams were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Good news for Gunners fans
(23-09-2010) Arsenal fans breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday when it was announced that exciting left-back Kieran Gibbs would not be missing for long after injuring his foot against Tottenham in the Carling Cup the night before. Initially it was feared that the 20-year-old may have broken his metstarsal which would have meant a minimum six weeks out. But scans have revealed the defender was ok. "Kieran has suffered severe bruising to his left foot and will hopefully only be missing from first-team action for the short term," a club statement read. The Gunners are already having to deal without the services of skipper Cesc Fabregas, England winger Theo Walcott, Dutch forward Robin van Persie, Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner and midfielder Abou Diaby.
Fab focussed but Barca still loom large
(23-09-2010) Cesc Fabregas insists he is "completely focused" on Arsenal but has hinted that he is still interested in a move to boyhood club Barcelona. “I know what I want to do and what I have to do. My mind is centred on what happens on the pitch,” said the Gunners skipper on Wednesday. “If I could not play football then I may worry, but while I still can here or wherever I can say I am happy. I am at a great club, in a great team and I want to do the best and have a great year." But following rumours that Real Madrid could move for him, the 23-year-old added, “'I have never said that I would not want to play for Madrid or anything like that, it seems to be a great club to me but I have set myself other objectives.”
Evra in blast at French head hunters
(22-09-2010) Manchester United star Patrice Evra has taken a pot shot at French football chiefs for trying to 'cut my head off'. Evra, France’s captain at their disastrous World Cup, was recently banned for five matches for his part in the squad’s infamous mutiny during the tournament in South Africa. The 29-year-old was also seen having a squabble with French fitness coach Robert Duverne in full view of television cameras. Evra’s appeal against his ban was later rejected by the FFF. "I cannot fight with everyone. I'm in pain right now,” revealed the Red Devils star on Tuesday. "Certain people want to cut my head off and they are managing to do it at the moment. It's hard because I still don't know why I've been condemned."
Fab sweating on making big Blues clash
(22-09-2010) Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas is set for three weeks on the sidelines with hamstring knack. The Spanish star pulled up lame in the Gunners draw with Sunderland at the weekend and is now in a race to make their crucial clash with EPL leaders Chelsea on 3 October. The 23-year-old suffered the injury as he fortuitously netted a freak goal at the Stadium of Light, kicking the ball into Anton Ferdinand before it looped 40 yards and into the net. The injury list at the Emirates is starting to hit crisis proportions with Fabregas joining fellow stars Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner on the physio’s table. What’s worse for the Gunners is that Fabregas had just been finding his form having returned late after reaching the World Cup final.
Stars must stop whingeing – Mancini
(22-09-2010) Manchester City boss Roberto has told his sulking stars to shut up and start delivering on the pitch. The Italian is sick of members of his expensively assembled squad moaning when they are left out of his starting XI. "It's important that we start to change the players' mentality if we want to win something and become a top team,” said the Italian on Tuesday. "It's impossible that every few days a player does an interview saying 'Oh, I'm not playing'. It's important he can knock on my door and speak with me and I will explain the situation.” He pointed to clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea where players learn to live with squad rotation. "Other teams probably have a different mentality as all the players know the manager is going to change things from game to game. I want a mentality like at United and Chelsea."
I’ll be a United sensation - Bebe
(22-09-2010) New Manchester United winger Bebe insists he will be a sensation at Old Trafford – despite never having pulled on a first team jersey! The £7m summer signing was less than impressive on his debut for the reserves last week and is expected to feature in United’s Carling Cup clash with minnows Scunthorpe on Wednesday. This hasn’t deterred the 20-year-old from boasting: "I am going to be a brilliant player for United. Sir Alex (Ferguson) told me he is very happy with me and wants me to train more and get into the first team.” The Red Devils famously signed Bebe on the recommendation of former Old Trafford No 2 Carlos Queiroz, having never seen him play.
Gunners in for Belgian defender and other red-hot gossip
(22-09-2010) Arsenal are keeping close tabs on Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen. According to reports, the 23-year-old Belgium international has impressed Arsene Wenger who would like to pair him with his international teammate in the centre of the Gunners defence. Elsewhere, DR Congo star Dieumerci Mbokani turned down the chance to join Liverpool this summer and instead joined Monaco - but has told Reds boss Roy Hodgson he is prepared to play for him in the future; Hoffenheim’s Togo international striker Peniel Mlapa says he is flattered with speculation linking him with a move to Tottenham but is focused on his career in the Bundesliga; Roma want Manchester City keeper Shay Given - and Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has encouraged him to consider a move to Serie A; and Newcastle are weighing up a £12.5m move for 28-year-old Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino, according to reports in Italy.

Berba reveals secret of success
(21-09-2010) Dimitar Berbatov’s improved form is the result of a strenuous summer training programme. According to the Bulgarian, he was so disappointed with his form in his first two seasons at Old Trafford that he vowed to come back fitter and stronger. "I've said before, the people of Manchester United are the judges and that is the way it should be. It's their team. I am a guest - a privileged guest,” revealed the 29-year-old on Monday. "Now I feel like everything I imagine on the pitch will come true and that feels awesome.” Berbatov has been a new man on the pitch so far this season, scoring seven goals including a sensational hat-trick against Liverpool on Sunday. “I ran six miles every day during the off season. I watched one World Cup match, went for a run, then watched another and went for another run,” he added.
Wenger facing touchline ban
(21-09-2010) Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been charged with improper conduct by the FA for his behaviour at the end of the Gunners' 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Saturday. The Frenchman appeared to angrily confront the fourth official after Darren Bent equalised for the Black Cats in the fifth minute of stoppage time. The fourth official had earlier shown that four minutes would be played. Wenger has been offered the standard punishment of a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine but has until 23 September to decide whether to accept the charge or face an FA regulatory commission. Said the Arsenal boss after the match: "If you have a watch, you can control. It was outside the four minutes. I know the referee can give more than four, it's a minimum of four minutes. But in the four minutes nothing happened to justify the extension of the time."
Wasteful United risking mass cardiac arrest - Evra
(21-09-2010) Manchester United defender Patrice Evra fears heart-attacks all round Old Trafford if the Red Devils continue to allow opponents routes back into games. In recent weeks United have allowed Fulham to grab an injury time equaliser and Everton to come back from two goals down also in stoppage time to grab a draw. Then on Sunday they threw away a two goal lead to allow Liverpool back into the game but luckily Dimitar Berbatov grabbed the winner six minutes from time. "If we keep bringing that nervousness to the situation we could finish the game with a heart attack," said Evra on Monday. "We had an accident at Fulham. We had another accident at Everton. But if you do it again it is not an accident. It is simply that you do not want to win the league,” he added.
We’re improving – Stevie G
(21-09-2010) While disappointed by Sunday’s loss to Manchester United, Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool can take heart as they are improving all the time under Roy Hodgson. "It is going to take time before the new manager gets his feet in the door and gets his ideas over," said the England midfielder on Monday. "We are improving and the performance yesterday was very good. If we play like that most weeks we will beat most teams in the league. We just came up against a man in form who was the difference." The Reds went down 3-2 at Old Trafford after fighting back from 2-0 down to level matters, only for Dimitar Berbatov to head the winner six minutes from time. "I thought second half we were much more positive and played some terrific stuff but you get nothing for that” added Gerrard.
Red Devils linked to another Spurs star and other red-hot gossip
(21-09-2010) Not content to be linked with just one Tottenham player (midfielder Wilson Palacios), Manchester United were on Monday linked with another Spurs star. According to reports, the Red Devils are also eyeing Tom Huddlestone, and like Palacios, will offer £16m for the young England midfielder in January. Elsewhere, Nigerian striker Victor Obinna wants to make his loan move from Inter Milan to West Ham permanent; Arsenal are eyeing the double signing of Fulham centre-back Brede Hangeland and Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg in a £22m January signing; and Liverpool star duo Pepe Reina and Fernando Torres may be sold as Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks plots a £280m buyout of partner George Gillett's shares in the club.

Berbatov goes home smiling
(20-09-2010) Dimitar Berbatov hailed Sunday his “best day in a United shirt” after bagging a hat-trick against Liverpool and receiving a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful. The Bulgarian scored all three goals in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over their fiercest rivals. It was the first time any United player has scored three goals against Liverpool since Stan Pearson in 1946, some 64 years ago. "It was probably my best day in a United shirt," said Berbatov afterwards. "Obviously I am happy. I am going home with a smile on my face. But I am nothing special. I am going home to play with my kids." Earlier, United had thrown away a two goal lead before Berbatov popped up to head home six minutes from time. Berbatov has scored seven goals this season.
No catastrophe – Red Roy
(20-09-2010) Sunday’s agonising loss to Manchester United is not a catastrophe but has dented his teams league title chances, claims Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson. The Reds fought back from two goals down to level matters at Old Trafford before conceding a goal six minutes from time to hand the three points to their bitter North West rivals. It was the Merseysiders second loss of the campaign and leaves them in 16th place on the standings. "We have had a remarkably hard start to the season," admitted the Liverpool boss afterwards. "We were playing against a top team and we can take a lot of credit from the way we went about our business and got ourselves back into the game.” He added: "To use words like catastrophe is a bit strong unless you are talking about winning the league.”
Shay ‘Given’ up hope on City future
(20-09-2010) Shay Given is desperate to end his Manchester City hell and will look for an escape during the January transfer window. The Irish goalkeeper has been relegated to the bench this season after Roberto Mancini installed Joe Hart as his first choice stopper. "It's very, very frustrating. I know it doesn't matter what I do on the training pitch, I won't be playing at the weekend. That can be demoralising,” admitted the 34-year-old on Saturday. "The club said I wasn't going anywhere and that was frustrating. We'll see what happens come January and hopefully if the situation is the same I can go on loan and try and get some games in.” He added: "I've never said I want to leave Man City. I believe it's a big club that in the next couple of years is going to do big things. I want to be part of that but I also want to be playing football.“
Fergie ready to make double swoop
(20-09-2010) Wilson Palacios is in Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s sights. According to reports, a move will be made for the Honduran international due to doubts about Owen Hargreaves ability to play top class football again. Palacios has impressed in his 18 months at Tottenham and was one of the driving forces that led Harry Redknapp’s team into this season’s Champions League. Spurs paid Wigan £12m for the 26-year-old and are expected to demand upwards of £16m from United to part with him. Another player who remains in Fergie's sights is Real Madrid flop Karim Benzema. Apparently the Frenchman has failed to impress new Real boss Jose Mourinho who is prepared to sell the striker. Benzema cost the club over £30m from Lyon a year ago.
Owen going nowhere and other red-hot gossip
(20-09-2010) Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is set to tell Aston Villa counterpart Gerard Houllier that Michael Owen is going nowhere in January. Houllier, who worked with Owen for six years at Liverpool, is desperate to be reunited with the striker and was hoping to bring him to Villa Park. Fergie, however, believes the former England goal ace has a big part to play at Old Trafford this season, despite starting very few matches. Elsewhere, Newcastle are set to ask the EPL for special permission to re-sign Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given on loan; Chelsea are eyeing Bayern Munich's £9m-rated midfielder Toni Kroos, who has been dubbed 'the new Frank Lampard'; and Ajax Amsterdam have placed a £30m price tag on Uruguay international striker Luis Suarez, who was linked with Manchester United, Inter Milan and Barcelona during the summer.

Wenger in ref rant as Gunners draw
(19-09-2010) Arsene Wenger has blasted the referee for the amount of stoppage time he added in Arsenal’s clash with Sunderland on Saturday. The Black Cats equalised in the 95th minute at the Stadium of Light through Darren Bent to deny the Gunners a full three points. "It was outside the four minutes. I know the referee can give more than four, it's a minimum of four minutes," fumed Wenger. "But in the four minutes nothing happened to justify the extension of the time." Earlier Arsenal had taken the lead when Cesc Fabregas's block on Anton Ferdinand's clearance sailed 40 yards, over the reach of 'keeper Simon Mignolet and into the net. But after that Fabregas hobbled off with an injury, Alex Song was red-carded and Tomas Rosicky's missed penalty as Arsenal’s luck quickly evaporated.
Adebayor in fresh City bust-up
(19-09-2010) Emmauel Adebayor’s days at Manchester City appear numbered after the temperamental striker had a fresh bust up with manager Roberto Mancini. According to a report in the News of the World, Mancini accused the Togo international of faking an injury during training. Adebayor then insisted on having a medical scan on his leg before storming into Mancini’s office to present him with the results. The Tabloid says a City insider claims all hell then followed. “There is nothing worse than a manager accusing a player of feigning an injury. Adebayor might not be playing well, but he would never be so unprofessional. He was furious!" Adebayor, who earns £170,000-a-week, has not played for City since coming on as a substitute in their 1-0 defeat at Sunderland last month.
Fergie backs ‘whipping boy’ Berbatov
(19-09-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson is surprised Dimitar Bernatov is still at Manchester United after all the flak he took last season. While the Bulgarian with the silky skills is enjoying a superb start to the season, for much of his career at Old Trafford he has been a maligned figure with many fans calling him lazy and demanding Fergie ship him out. "I have been quite thrilled with the way Berbatov continues to perform this season,” revealed Ferguson on Saturday. "Lots of questions were asked about him last season and he was made something of a whipping boy, to the point where he must have wondered if he had a future at Manchester United.” He added: "I concede that at times he seemed to struggle, but if you are satisfied about a player's credentials you must persevere.” Berbatov cost United £30.75million in 2008.
Stevie G deserves the title – Cole
(19-09-2010) No player deserves an EPL winners medal more than Steven Gerrard, claims the Liverpool legend’s teammate Joe Cole. The Merseysiders have not won the league since 1990. In that time their arch-enemies Manchester United have lifted the title 11 times to draw level with the Anfield side’s record tally of 18. "He's a tremendous player. I've known Steven since I was 17 or 18 and I obviously trained and played with him for England for 10 years so I know what he's all about," commented the 28-year-old Cole on Saturday. "But when you see him in a Liverpool shirt he's even better. A player like him deserves to win the championship. I know that's what he wants over the next four to five years at the club.” Cole is set to experience his first clash between the two north-west rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Magpies desperate to sign French star and other red-hot gossip
(19-09-2010) Newcastle are desperate to sign Hatem Ben Arfa permanently. This comes after the French winger showed his class by scoring a stunning winner for the Magpies against Everton on Saturday. Ben Arfa is on loan at St James Park from French giants Marseille until the end of the season. Elsewhere, Manchester United are determined to land Real Madrid's French midfielder Lassana Diarra; Liverpool are interested in bringing Napoli's Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani to Anfield in January; Tottenham and Everton are keen on signing Togo teenage striker Peniel Mlapa from German club Hoffenheim; and former Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz is set to rejoin Manchester United for a third time as assistant manager.

Red Devils have a new skipper
(18-09-2010) It looks as though injury-prone Rio Ferdinand has been dumped as captain of Manchester United. On Friday Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson insisted that Nemanja Vidic would wear the skipper’s armband this season “because he is available all the time." And while Ferdinand has never been the club’s official captain, he has often led the club in the absence of the often-injured Gary Neville. But not any more insists Fergie. "We want it to be a player who's consistently available for us,” said the fiery Scot. "Everyone will recognise that if Vidic is fit - and he has been all season - he'll always be there. You wouldn't leave him out of your team unless you were resting him. He has started the campaign as the captain and it will stay that way."
Lay-off Torres, insists Rio
(18-09-2010) Manchester United are braced for a world-class performance from Fernando Torres when they clash with Liverpool on Sunday. Torres has been chief tormentor of the Red Devils in recent seasons in matches between the two giants of the English game. The Spaniard has however come in for much criticism in recent months after a mediocre World Cup and patchy form for the Reds, with football pundit and former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp describing him as 'diabolical' last weekend. United centre-half Rio Ferdinand believes the criticism has been over the top. "People jump on the bandwagon. He is a great player and has proved that to everybody,” said Ferdinad on Friday. "Two months ago, everyone was saying what a world-class player he is and one of the best strikers in the world, so to become a bad player overnight just doesn't happen.”
Silva insists his size is just sterling
(18-09-2010) Expensive Manchester City star David Silva has dismissed suggestions that he is too small to make a major impact in the EPL. The Spanish World Cup winner, a £24m summer signing from Valencia, has largely failed to impress so far at Eastlands. "I do not agree that I am too small," said Silva on Friday. "I know people say you have to be big and strong to play in the EPL but you cannot just judge a player by their size. You have to look at their other qualities too. Look at Spain, we won the World Cup with small players.” He added: “In the Spanish team, we have the three main attributes of a winning team. We are good technically, we are quick, but also strong.” City travel to Wigan on Sunday, having not won at the JJB Stadium in five previous EPL visits.
United turned up their noses at Cole
(18-09-2010) Manchester United turned down the chance to sign Joe Cole in the summer. According to reports, the England international was offered to long-time Cole admirer Sir Alex Ferguson only for the Scot to rebuff the 29-year-old’s agent. "We were approached by his agent at one point but we didn't enter into discussions,” revealed Fergie on Friday. "It was maybe just too complicated to get involved." Cole subsequently signed a four-year deal with Liverpool and should feature in his new club’s clash with United on Sunday, hoping to make the Red Devils regret their decision. "It's a big derby and I'm more than ready,” said Cole. "We've had such a difficult start with suspensions and people missing pre-season. Mine seemed to last ages and I just want to get back into it now.”
Starlet wants ‘dream’ United move and other red-hot gossip
(18-09-2010) Manchester United target Wilson Eduardo is desperate for a "dream" move to Old Trafford. According to reports, the 20-year-old Sporting Lisbon striker wants to follow in the footsteps of Bebe, his fellow Portuguese who recently signed for the Red Devils for £7m. Elsewhere, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are all eyeing Werder Bremen winger Marko Marin, who has been dubbed the "German Messi"; Ajax and Holland goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who is wanted by Arsenal and Manchester United, will reject any chance of a January transfer window transfer to stay in his home country; and Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner has dismissed stories he could be forced to quit the game because of a groin injury.

Cole jubilant after first Reds goal
(17-09-2010) Joe Cole was jubilant after netting his first goal for Liverpool. The England midfielder helped the Reds make a lightning start to their Europa League match against Romanian side Steau Bucharest by scoring after just 25 seconds. It was his first goal for the Merseysiders since his close season move from Chelsea and comes on the back of nearly a month on the sidelines following a red-card against Arsenal in his opening game for the club . "There was a lot of frustration after a month without playing. It has been stop-start but I was happy to get the first goal for the team,” said Cole. "The suspension seemed to last ages. I just want to get back into it now." Two goals from David Ngog, and a Lucas 20-yard screamer saw Liverpool home after a 13th-minute Cristian Tanase equaliser.
Beating the Reds a must - Rio
(17-09-2010) Clobbering arch-enemies Liverpool will be just the right tonic to get Manchester United firmly back on track, reckons Rio Ferdinand. United head into Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford with dented confidence after dropping sloppy points over the past couple of weeks against Fulham and Everton and drawing a blank against Rangers in the Champions League. "This kind of game is always good for galvanising spirit and belief," said the England defender on Thursday. "You would be beating one of your closest rivals, so to win this game would be great for team morale. Hopefully it will put us on the crest of a wave." United currently lie four points behind EPL leaders Chelsea. They are expected to welcome back Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Scholes, Nani, and Nemanja Vidic for the tie against Liverpool.
Bebe finally takes United bow
(17-09-2010) Summer signing Bebe played his first game for Manchester United on Thursday. According to reports, the £7m capture from Vitoria Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes of a 4-1 reserve-team defeat by Aston Villa. In the match the 20-year-old regularly swapped flanks with Frenchman Gabriel Obertan and produced some dangerous crosses. Question marks have been raised about Bebe’s fitness levels since his move to Old Trafford. So far United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has opted not to select Bebe for duty with the reserves until he completed a good few weeks of solid training.
Owen still has it – Houllier
(17-09-2010) Gerard Houllier is desperate to make Michael Owen his first signing as Aston Villa boss. The Frenchman worked with Owen for six years while they were together at Liverpool. He insists the 30-year-old, who now plays for Manchester United, is not a spent force and can still shine in the EPL. "Michael has always been in my thoughts. I like him as a player and a man,” commented Houllier on Thursday. "I went to Liverpool on September 4 for Jamie Carragher's testimonial and I saw Michael play a half of football. He still has the legs for it!" Owen has not exactly set the world on fire at United, bagging a paltry three goals in 21 games for the Red Devils in an injury-plagued season at the club.
Liverpool in for talented Ghanaian and other red-hot gossip
(17-09-2010) Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Hoffenheim defender Isaac Vorsah. According to reports, the 22-year-old Ghanaian is keen for a move away from the Bundesliga minnows which has alerted the Reds. Vorsah made 62 appearances for Hoffenheim last season and will be available on a free transfer in June 2011. Elsewhere, Everton are closing in on USA defender Jay DeMerit, who is a free agent following his release by Watford; Tottenham are battling Newcastle and Liverpool for 21-year-old FC Utrecht forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who made his international debut for Holland in August; and Manchester United are keen on 20-year-old Sporting Lisbon striker Wilson Eduardo, currently on loan at Beira-Mar.

Wenger hails Fab's ‘new dimension’
(16-09-2010) Arsene Wenger believes Cesc Fabregas’ love for Arsenal has seen the midfield general take his game to a new dimension. This comes after the Gunners skipper netted a brace in a 6-0 demolition of Portuguese outfit Braga in the Champions League on Wednesday. "He has taken another dimension," commented Wenger after the game at the Emirates. "People forget he is 23, where other players start." Added the Frenchman: "It wasn't easy for him in the summer, he was under a lot of pressure of course, but I never had any doubt that he loves the club and he wants to do well for us. He's a leader and he shows that in his attitude on and off the pitch."
Wasted chances don’t worry Special One
(16-09-2010) Jose Mourinho was unconcerned with the many fluffed chances his expensively assembled team chalked up in their 2-0 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday. "We played very well we pressed a lot and didn't let them play how they wanted to. One day some poor team will pay for all these chances we've missed,” said Mourinho afterwards. "If we only had two shots I would worry, or if (goalkeeper Iker) Casillas was our best player.” A brace from striker Gonzalo Higuain ensured the points for Real but Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria both wasted a bag of chances. The Meringues have shown a gradual improvement in front of goal in Mourinho's three matches in charge, drawing 0-0 with Real Mallorca in their first match of the season, then downing Osasuna 1-0 at the weekend before their win over the Dutch giants at the Bernabeu.
Smith feels Valencia’s pain
(16-09-2010) Former Manchester United star Alan Smith is full of empathy for Antonio Valencia following the Ecuadorian’s horrific ankle injury against Rangers on Tuesday. Smith’s Old Trafford career was cut short by a similar injury just over four years ago. And by a strange twist of fate, Smith was in the stadium when Valencia went down after an innocuous challenge from Kirk Broadfoot. "I can relate to what Antonio is going through,” Smith told The Sun newspaper on Thursday. "There's no getting away from the fact it is a hard road back from an injury like that but with determination, you can do it.” Added the 29-year-old: "It means weeks of doing virtually nothing then long days with the specialists, the physios and in the gym building your ankle up before you can even think about kicking a ball again.”
Sloppy form concerns Giggs
(16-09-2010) Manchester United need to shape up fast or face the consequences, reckons club stalwart Ryan Giggs. The Red Devils face arch rivals Liverpool on Saturday already trailing EPL leaders Chelsea by four points. And following a series of games blotted by amateurish defending and few goals, Giggs knows that the team will have to improve if they don’t want to see Chelsea disappear over the horizon. "When people defend in numbers we usually find a way round them and that's what was disappointing against Rangers in the Champions League,” said the Welshman. "We were also sloppy away to Everton and Fulham. Over the last few years you have needed a strong start in the league and mustn't drop too many points early on. We're wary of that."
Red Devils chasing Spurs star and other red-hot gossip
(16-09-2010) Manchester United are eyeing Tottenham's Wilson Palacios. According to reports, Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants the tough-tackling holding midfielder in the continued absence of the injured Owen Hargreaves. Palacios cost Spurs £12m from Wigan in January 2009. He is currently valued at around £16m. Elsewhere, Chelsea are weighing up a move for 18-year-old Malaga striker Juanmi; Liverpool are planning a January move for Romanian side Cluj's 20-year-old Cote d’Ivoire striker Lacina Traore; Arsenal and Manchester United are set to fight it out for Werder Bremen winger Marko Marin; and Tottenham are monitoring Hoffenheim’s £5m-rated Togo striker Peniel Mlapa, who has been dubbed the new Emmanuel Adebayor.

Battle of Britain bores as AV suffers horrific injury
(15-09-2010) As if a dour stalemate with Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday night was not enough, Manchester United suffered another blow when they lost star midfielder Antonio Valencia for the season. The Ecuador international broke his ankle midway through the second-half of the match at Old Trafford after a seemingly innocuous incident involving Kirk Broadfoot. TV replays showed his foot pointing in the wrong direction and he was eventually stretchered off, with Broadfoot in obvious distress. "It is a dislocation or a fracture and he gets operated on tomorrow morning," confirmed Ferguson after the 0-0 draw. "It was an innocuous challenge but when you saw the Rangers player waving, you knew it was a bad one.” Added Fergie: "It is a bad blow for the boy. It is similar to the injury Alan Smith got and you are talking about the rest of the season."
Blues to break CL hoodoo – Cech
(15-09-2010) Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech believes the club is primed to lift the Champions League trophy this season. This despite losing experienced campaigners such as Joe Cole, Ricardo Carvalho, Deco and Michael Ballack. Speaking ahead of their clash with Slovakian champions MSK Zilina, the Czech international is adamant that the time has come for the Blues to break their hoodoo in the world’s most prestigious club competition. "We are coming here in a very good mood," said Cech. "We have been playing very well recently and we are ready to go in the Champions League.” He added: "Last year we won the Double which is a great achievement but we couldn't progress in the Champions League, that's the way it is. The previous seasons we have always been in the semi-final and once in the final, but we all believe that this time is going to be the breakthrough.”
EPL still the strongest – Wenger
(15-09-2010) Arsene Wenger has hailed the EPL as the strongest league on the planet. Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League opener against Portuguese outfit Braga at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, Wenger said the success of English teams in the competition – last season’s final between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan was the only final after 2005 not to contain an EPL team - was a clear indication where the balance of power lay. "The Premier League is still the strongest in Europe," said Wenger. "What happened last season was an accident, and we have to show that this year.” He added: "The best-equipped teams would be the ones who are always there, meaning Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, because we have always been there in the last 10 years, but maybe Tottenham can create a surprise.”
Fergie defends team selection
(15-09-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has defended his team selection following Manchester United’s limp 0-0 draw against Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Red Devils gaffer made 10 changes to the line-up that started the 3-3 draw at Everton last Saturday. Only Darren Fletcher retained his place, while Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand were recalled. "The criticism will be why didn't I play a stronger team," said Fergie afterwards. "I think I played a very strong team. People forget eight of them played against Chelsea in the Charity (Community) Shield.” He added: "It's a terrific squad of players we have and there was no problem playing them. They should have won that game, but give credit to Rangers, their system is very difficult to break down."
Ronaldo sounds Real warning
(15-09-2010) Cristiano Ronaldo has sounded a warning to club’s across Europe that this will be Real Madrid’s year in the Champions League. Speaking ahead of the Meringues clash with Dutch gianst Ajax on Wednesday, tThe world’s most expensive player said: "This club, as always, has the ambition to win the Champions League. I have a special feeling about this season. We can win. We have all the necessary ingredients to win the competition." He did however ask the club’s fans to have patience with the team. "This team is under construction, many of us had never played together before,” added the club’s £80m signing from Manchester United. "Jose Mourinho is the best coach in the world and I'm sure we will win and create spectacle."

Careless and wasteful – Fergie
(14-09-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has accused his Manchester United charges of being “careless and wasteful” in recent matches. The Red Devils threw away a two goal lead to draw at Everton on Saturday, while they also conceded an injury time equaliser against Fulham two weeks ago. This has seen the club fall four points behind early EPL leaders Chelsea. "It has been a lack of concentration in our defending. It is those last few moments,” conceded Fergie on Monday. "Defensively on Saturday we were very good until that very last moment." He added: "They play great football, create great openings and great opportunities and they are a bit wasteful. Those last moments in games when we have been in front shouldn't happen again. We have been burnt twice." United play Glasgow Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Grieving boss inspires Stoke win
(14-09-2010) Grieving Stoke City manager Tony Pulis made a half-time appearance at the Brittania Stadium on Monday to inspire a second-half comeback by the Potters against Aston Villa. Pulis had been forced to skip the match following the death of his mother earlier in the day. Assistant boss Dave Kemp says Pulis' intervention was key to Stoke's comeback from a goal down at the break to win 2-1. "He was in the dressing room for the half-time team-talk and he took the paint off the walls," said Kemp. "He has obviously had a very sad day but typically for him he wanted to get straight into it, put his overalls on and get on with his work. His appearance gave the players and the fans a boost and I think you saw that." The result was Stoke’s first win of the season.
Fab feels the love for Almunia
(14-09-2010) Gaff-prone Arsenal ‘keeper Manuel Almunia is trusted by his team-mates, insists Gunners skipper Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal tried desperately hard to sign Fulham stopper Mark Schwarzer in the summer as a replacement for Almunia such was the club’s exasperation with the Spaniard last season. But following three wins from their first four games of the season with Almunia between the sticks, things are looking rosy at the Emirates. "Manuel commanded the defence very well at Blackburn - but it is not just about one game or two or three," commented Fabregas on Monday. "He is well-loved player among everybody here and performs well for this club. We all wish him a super season and have a lot of trust."
Rio eager to smell the grass again
(14-09-2010) Rio Ferdinand is thrilled to be back in big-time football. The Manchester United defender has been out with a knee injury since late May but is expected to make a comeback for the Red Devils in their Champions League clash with Rangers on Tuesday. "I’ve been training full pelt with the team the last two weeks and played a reserve game the other day and feel good,” said the 31-year-old on Monday. "I just enjoyed being out there, putting the shirt on and smelling the cut grass again." He also said the time off meant he rested his troublesome back. "My back is fine now. There are things I have to do to make sure the problem doesn't reoccur but that is all part of getting older." Ferdinand started only 20 of United's games in all competitions last season as his troublesome back lead to a series of injuries.

Nani urges Bebe to stop showing off
(13-09-2010) Nani has offered some advice to his new Manchester United teammate Bebe. According to reports, Nani is said to have told his fellow Portuguese to stop showing off during training if he wants to make the grade at Old Trafford. "Sometimes you try to show everything at first and things don't go quite right,” revealed Nani on Sunday. "I've explained to him about the things I have learned. It is important to try and keep things simple, get your confidence up, then show your quality." United paid £7m for 20-year-old Bebe - without manager Sir Alex Ferguson ever watching him play. He is yet to make his debut for the Red Devils but is likely to feature in the Carling Cup clash with Scunthorpe on September 22.
Zamora under the knife
(13-09-2010) Fulham striker Bobby Zamora has undergone surgery on the broken leg he suffered in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Wolves. However, ankle ligament damage was also discovered during the operation on Sunday, raising fears that the England international striker could face even longer on the sidelines. "He's broken his leg just above the ankle and is out for a minimum of four months," confirmed Fulham boss Mark Hughes after the game. Hughes also refused to blame Karl Henry, the Wolves player involved in the tackle that broke Zamora’s leg. "It's a shame but I don't really lay the blame on the player [Henry]. It's one of those," added Hughes. "There's always a danger if you get tackled from the side or from behind that players' legs can get trapped.” Zamora hit 19 goals for the Cottagers last season, as they surged into Europa League final and finished 12th in the EPL.
Old foes smoke the peace pipe
(13-09-2010) Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho have agreed to bury the hatchet after meeting for dinner to clear up the bad blood that existed between them. The feud between the pair started when they managed AC Milan and Inter Milan respectively, with Mourinho famously saying Ancelotti was "no friend of mine". But this has apparently all changed after they met for dinner in Geneva last week. "He was very kind when I won the Premier League. He sent me a message and our relationship is different now, it is a good relationship,” said Ancelotti. "We met in Geneva last week. We had a good time together, now he is my friend." The pair were in Switzerland to attend a UEFA conference.

But that was before Rafa Benitez was sent packing. Shaqiri has now urged new Reds boss Roy Hodgson to reprise the move. He has just a season left on his contract with Swiss club Basel and should be available for a cut-price £2m in January. Shaqiri, who was in the Swiss World Cup squad, has already played seven times for his country.

Roo axed as United draw
(12-09-2010) A seething Sir Alex Ferguson axed Wayne Rooney over the sex scandal that is plaguing his private life from the Manchester United squad that travelled to Everton on Saturday. United went on to draw 3-3 with the Toffees at Goodison Park after conceding goals in the 90th and 94th minutes. Publicly Fergie claimed to want to protect Rooney from the abuse he was set to cop from the Everton faithful. However, sources at Old Trafford believe the fiery Scot was actually laying down the law to his wayward star. In the match, Steven Pienaar opened the scoring for the home side, before goals from Darren Fletcher, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov put the Red Devils 3-1 up. But late strikes from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta left Ferguson fuming as his team fell four points behind EPL leaders Chelsea.
Essien’s a new player – Ancelotti
(12-09-2010) Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for star midfielder Michael Essien after he netted twice in the Blues 3-1 win over West Ham on Saturday. Ancelotti said the muscular Ghanaian has come back refreshed and stronger since recovering from a serious knee injury suffered in January. It forced him to miss the Blues title run last season as well as the World Cup."I think Essien's better than a new signing,” commented the Italian manager. "We missed him last season because he's one of the top midfielders in the world. He came back and we're happy he can maintain this level of play. “ Added Ancelotti: "He's fit now. We have to pay attention because he's played well in every game so far this season. He scored twice today and that's fantastic. I hope he maintains this position for as long as possible."
Wenger hails maturing Gunners
(12-09-2010) A young Arsenal side showed a stern test of character in dispatching 10-man Bolton 4-1 on Saturday, claims Gunners boss Arsene Wenger. Goals from new signings Laurent Koscielny, Marouane Chamakh, as well as by Alex Song (Arsenal's 1,000th EPL goal under manager Arsene Wenger) and substitute Carlos Vela kept the north Londoners in touch with league leaders Chelsea. "We have had two games, at Blackburn and today, which we certainly would not have taken six points from two years ago," commented Wenger. "The players can handle these situations.” He added: “Overall it was a competitive game where we dominated and created many chances, but when you play against Bolton, as long as you don't kill the game off, they can score - you can dominate 80% of the game and still lose.” Bolton had centre-back Gary Cahill red-carded for a challenge from behind on Chamakh.
Mancini shows Hart despite Joe’s howler
(12-09-2010) Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini will continue to back young goalkeeper Joe Hart despite his howler that gifted Blackburn a goal on Saturday. Patrick Vieira saved the big-spending Blues the blushes by grabbing an equaliser at Eastlands. "It was a strange goal. It can happen. This is football. Joe Hart is a good goalkeeper,” said Mancini afterwards. "We were very unlucky. We had six players out and must have had 25 chances to score against Blackburn. It is very hard when teams put 10 players behind the ball but we have to try and find a solution." Mancini controversially installed Hart as his No.1 ‘keeper ahead of the experienced Shay Given at the beginning of the season.
Houllier after United striker and other red-hot gossip
(12-09-2010) New Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier is keen to bring Michael Owen to the club. According to reports, the Frenchman believes he can still get the best out of Owen, a player he worked successfully with at Liverpool. Owen has failed to set the scene on fire at Manchester United after a series of injuries. He generally starts on the bench at Old Trafford and could find the prospect of regular first team football at Villa Park appealing. Elsewhere, Real Madrid are allegedly plotting to end Wayne Rooney's Manchester United turmoil by setting aside £65m for a summer swoop; Manchester City are planning to smash the British transfer record by signing Argentine playmaker Javier Pastore from Palermo for £40m, but face competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid; and Ajax golvesman Maarten Stekelenburg has emerged as Manchester United's number one choice 'keeper to succeed Edwin van der Sar.

Roo facing ‘a bloody nightmare’
(11-09-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Wayne Rooney that he faces “a bloody nightmare” at Everton on Saturday. The 24-year-old striker is set to cop much flak from the Goodison Park faithful for his romps with prostitutes while his wife was pregnant as well as for being a former Everton player. "It would not matter if we had Dixie Dean playing for us, it is always a bloody nightmare going there," commented Fergie on Friday. “It is a hard place to go to but that atmosphere is fantastic,” he added. Rooney left Everton in 2004 to join United and has been a hate figure with the Everton fans since then.
Neville respects ‘Pool more than City
(11-09-2010) Gary Neville has taken a swipe at Manchester City, claiming he respects bitter rivals Liverpool more than clubs "who throw a load of money" to guarantee success. While not mentioning any club by name, the Manchester United captain was clearly referring to the Red Devils cross-town rivals. "When I was a youngster, they [Liverpool] won everything," said Neville, in an interview for MUTV. "It was horrible. Jealousy does come into it but I have more respect for their traditions than I would for some of the other clubs coming onto the scene throwing a load of money at it. They [Liverpool] have got history." The first United and City derby of the season is on 10 November and Neville is sure to take lots of stick from the Blues fans for his comments.
Harry to make former Gunner captain?
(11-09-2010) William Gallas is set to make his debut for Tottenham on Saturday against West Brom with the added pressure of being named captain. According to reports, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will rest regular skipper Ledley King, while stand-in Michael Dawson is injured. Another option for captain, Robbie Keane, is expected to be on the bench. Asked if he was serious about giving Gallas the armband against the Baggies, he replied: "I'm serious, deadly serious." He added: "I have been very impressed with him as a fellow. I am even considering making him captain on Saturday.” Redknapp enraged some Spurs fans for signing Gallas from fierce rivals Arsenal. “His price on the open market would have been anywhere between £8m and £10m. For me it was a no brainer to give him a contract here. He cost nothing and he is not on silly wages, either," added Redknapp.
Red Roy gives Babel three months
(11-09-2010) Roy Hodgson has given Ryan Babel three months to salvage his Liverpool career. After over three years at Anfield, the Dutch international has not made a big splash despite costing £12m. "The thing about Ryan is that for two years he hasn't had much of a look in,” commented Hodgson on Friday. "It's now up to him to convince me. If he has not done that by January, maybe then he will have to accept we will be in the market for a centre-forward once again.” He added: "He is working hard in training, determined to take his chance and that last-minute transfer thing will perhaps be something we are all glad didn't come about in the end.”
United target to stay in Germany and other red-hot gossip
(11-09-2010) Manchester United target Neven Subotic, who is also wanted by Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid, has said he is will remain at Borussia Dortmund at least until next season. Toffees fans to roast Roo
(10-09-2010) Wayne Rooney will feel the wrath of the Everton fans when he travels to Goodison Park with Manchester United on Saturday. According to Everton defender Phil Jagielka, Rooney can expect a roasting from the Toffees faithful for two reasons – one, because he left Everton to join United in 2004, and two, because of the latest revelations that he cheated on his pregnant wife with a hooker. "There's a good chance he’ll get heckled. He normally gets quite a bit of stick anyway. I can't see that changing,” said Jagielka on Thursday. "I am sure Wayne can deal with it. He is a tough lad and he will let his football do the talking."
Stevie G backs Houllier to succeed
(10-09-2010) Steven Gerrard believes Gerard Houllier will be a success at Aston Villa. Gerrard made his Liverpool debut a decade ago while the Frenchman was in charge at Anfield. And the Reds skipper has nothing but praise for the 62-year-old who spent six years on Merseyside. "I've still got quite a close relationship with Gerard. He gave me my chance at the top level and I certainly learnt an awful lot from him,” commented Gerrard on Thursday. “Aston Villa have got themselves a very good manager and I am not surprised Gerard has come back into the EPL." Added the 30-year-old: "It has been no surprise to me that Villa have been interested in him because he is a top manager. We had a magnificent year in 2001. He came in and had to change an awful lot of things at Liverpool and that is what he is good at.”
More injury woe for Gunners
(10-09-2010) Arsenal have been rocked by the news that star winger Theo Walcott faces six weeks on the sidelines. The England international injured his ankle in the Three Lions 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifier win over Switzerland on Tuesday. "I thought it would be three or four days - unfortunately it will be four to six weeks,” commented Gunners boss Arsene Wenger on Thursday. The Frenchman added that it could have been worse. “We had some good news about the scan because at some stage we were scared it could be worse. But overall it is a question of patience and rehabilitation." The loss of Walcott comes hard on the heels of an injury to striker Robin van Persie. The Duitchman is set to miss a month of action. Walcott had been in good form this season, scoring four goals in three games before the international break.
Hansen likens new boy to Reds legend
(10-09-2010) Liverpool great Alan Hansen believes new Reds signing Raul Meireles has what it takes to become the club’s ‘new’ Terry McDermott. The 27-year-old Portugal star joined Liverpool for £17m as a direct replacement for Javier Mascherano before the end of the transfer window. And despite not having kicked a ball in a Liverpool shirt, Hansen has likened him to one of the club’s most esteemed players. "The closest thing we had to Meireles would have been Terry McDermott,” said Hansen on Thursday. "He was the same type of energetic box-to-box midfielder."
La Liga giants want City flop and other red-hot gossip
(10-09-2010) Real Madrid are apparently keen to sign Manchester City misfit Emmanuel Adebayor. Don Fabio’s roar of approval
(09-09-2010) Fabio Caplello has labelled England’s first half display against Switzerland on Wednesday as their best performance since he took over as manager. England beat the Swiss 3-1 to record their second straight win in the qualifiers for Euro 2012. "It is the best first half since I have been England manager," commented Capello afterwards. "To play here against Switzerland is not easy. The fans and the stadium and the pitch made it really difficult for us to play.” He added: "We played very well, with confidence. The players are fresh. They play quickly. They run fast. For this moment we are a good team." England’s next match is against Montenegro next month.
Villa announce new boss
(09-09-2010) Gerard Houllier was on Wednesday named as the new manager of Aston Villa. The Frenchman succeeds Martin O'Neill who walked out on the club in July. The move sees the 63-year-old Houllier return to the EPL after a six-year absence since ending his reign at Liverpool. After a successful spell with Lyon from 2005-07, Houllier has spent the last few years working as technical director for the French Football Federation. "I am very happy and proud to join this great and historic club,” said Houllier in a statement. "It was a very difficult decision for me to leave the French Football Federation. But I could not turn down the opportunity to manage a club whose approach, both on and off the pitch, I have long admired. Aston Villa is one of England's biggest clubs and has an amazing set of fans.”
Super Mario wanted back home
(09-09-2010) Barely a month after signing for Manchester City, Mario Balotelli is wanted back in Italy. According to reports, AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has revealed he wants to sign City’s £24m striker. Balotelli was famously seen wearing an AC Milan shirt when he was still on the books of their arch-enemies Inter Milan. Asked on Wednesday if he would like to bring Balotelli back to the San Siro, Galliani said: "Yes, I would like to.”
Inter boss scoffs at Kaka link
(09-09-2010) Inter Milan owner Massimo Moratti on Wednesday scoffed at reports linking the club to Brazilian superstar Kaka. This comes after an Italian newspaper claimed that the Nerazzurri were hoping to bring Kaka to the San Siro from Real Madrid in January. "I read about it in this morning's papers," admitted Moratti. "It's a wonderful idea, but it doesn't come from us." It was also alleged that Moratti had discussed the signing with Real Madrid manager and former Inter boss Jose Mourinho, but the president added: "I have never spoken about this with Mourinho."
Spurs back in for Villa star and other red-hot gossip
(09-09-2010) Tottenham are set to reignite their attempts to sign Aston Villa and England winger Ashley Young when the January transfer window opens. According to reports, the 25-year-old was close to move to White Hart Lane this summer until Martin O'Neill resigned as manager at Villa Park, which meant any transfer activity was put on hold. Elsewhere, Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay claims he turned down a move to Everton this summer because he did not like "the feel" of Goodison Park; Fiorentina star playmaker Riccardo Montolivo has played down speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal, saying he is "fine in Florence"; Inter Milan are set to launch a January bid to sign Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill; and Yuri Zhirkov, who Chelsea paid £18m from CSKA Moscow in July 2009, will consider his future at the club if he remains a bit-part player.

Roo back on song for England
(08-09-2010) Wayne Rooney has ended his week from hell on a high by leading England to an impressive 3-1 win over Switzerland in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday. The Manchester United striker, who was on the front pages of the tabloids this week for allegedly sleeping with a prostitute while his wife was pregnant, played as if he didn’t have a care in the world, helping himself to his first goal for England in almost a year. Darren Bent and Adam Johnson scored England’s other goals. Fabio Capello’s team now have six points from their first two qualifiers for the European Championships which will be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine in 2012.
Bad and good news for Gunners
(08-09-2010) Arsenal were dealt a fresh blow on Tuesday with the news that star striker Robin Van Persie is set to miss the next six weeks due to an ankle injury. The Dutch star picked up the knock in the Gunners 2-1 win over Blackburn in late August. Brighter news for Arsenal fans is that French winger Samir Nasri has recovered from knee surgery ahead of schedule. The 23-year-old sustained a meniscal injury against Liverpool on the opening day of the season. He is expected to return to full training in the next few days.
Bebe surprised by CL inclusion
(08-09-2010) New Manchester United signing Bebe is "surprised" to be included in the club’s Champions League squad. Speaking on Tuesday, the Portugal Under-21 international said: "I'm surprised by my inclusion in the Champions League squad. It's a dream for me. I never thought I would have made it, but now I am a very happy man.” Added the £7m signing: “I only hope that my confidence returns when I start playing some games and scoring goals, like I know how. At the moment I am working very hard each day in training. I intend to make the most of my chance and hopefully profit from the opportunity given to me." Just a year ago, Bebe was playing his football in the Portuguese third tier, but now United manager Sir Alex Ferguson predicts he has a big future at Old Trafford.
‘Barca in Fab’s DNA’
(08-09-2010) Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen believes Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas has Barcelona in his DNA. Speaking to Talksport, Vermaelen said: "Cesc carries Barcelona in the heart, in his DNA! Therefore it is impossible for him to forget about them.” Added the Belgian international: "He was determined to go to Barca last summer, he more or less confessed it in the dressing room. But that is past history. Now he is 100 per cent ready to put his all in to a great season with Arsenal."
Italian giants want Spurs star and other red-hot gossip
(08-09-2010) Serie A giants Juventus are tracking Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe. Elsewhere, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly told Bayern Munich's star midfielder Sebastian Schweinsteiger: "Next year you belong to me!"; Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona are all chasing Atheltic Bilbao's 17-year-old midfielder Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta; and Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart claims he turned down Liverpool to make an £8m deadline-day move to Spurs from Real Madrid.
Stevie G’s advice for Roo
(07-09-2010) Steven Gerrard has come out in support of beleaguered England colleague Wayne Rooney. This comes after reports in a Sunday newspaper alleging that Manchester United star Rooney cheated on his then pregnant wife with a high-class prostitute. And Gerrard knows what it is like to be in the public eye for the wrong reasons after a lengthy court case, and the threat of jail, following a brawl in a Southport pub in 2008. He was later acquitted. "Incredibly enough, I played some of my best football when I was going through my court case,” said Gerrard on Monday. "As Paul Gascoigne once said, the only way to escape is out on the pitch. That's certainly what happened to me." He added: "If you have an issue off the pitch, you're in a situation where you have to park it. And then get on with the rest of your life.”
Red Devils add one more to CL squad
(07-09-2010) Manchester United have added new signing Bebe to their Champions League squad. The Portugal striker, a recent £7m signing from Vitoria Guimaraes, was initially omitted from the 25-man squad for the European club showpiece event over fears that he was not properly fit. But is seems that Sir Alex Ferguson has had a change of heart regarding the 20-year-old, who has been penscilled in as the Red Devils 25th and final player. He is now available for United’s opening CL game against Rangers at Old Trafford. However, a more likely debut for the former ‘street kid’ is likely to be in the Carling Cup tie at Scunthorpe the following week.
Giggs lined up for new career
(07-09-2010) Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is being lined up to take over the managerial reins of Wales. According to reports, the Welsh FA want the 36-year-old to replace John Toshack when he stands down. The 61-year-old Toshack is expected to stand down after six years at the helm later this week. "Ryan has always been seen as the long-term replacement. He would certainly galvanise the players. He could be offered a deal where he can carry on playing,” said a Wales FA insider on Monday. This would mirror the manner Mark Hughes took on the Wales job while he was still playing at Blackburn. Wales have failed to reach the finals of a major competition since 1958. They are currently competing in the qualifiers for Euro 2012 in a group with Bulgaria, Switzerland, Montenegro and arch-rivals England.
Stoke defender lashes out at ‘weird’ Wenger
(07-09-2010) Ryan Shawcross has accused Arsene Wenger of having a personal vendetta against him. The 22-year-old, who plays for Stoke City, is the player who was red-carded for a tackle on young Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey last February which shattered the Welshman’s leg. While many believed the tackle to have been an accident, Wenger has never hidden his displeasure. Just last month he took another swipe at Shawcross, bizarrely accusing him of repeatedly fouling Tottenham ‘keeper Heurelho Gomes. "He's obviously got something against me. It's just weird,” claimed Shawcross on Monday. "He seems to have a problem with Stoke. Criticism doesn't bother me, unless it's a false accusation like this one. I don't mind people having their opinions, but if it's not a game involving his players, then I don't see the point."
Fergie scraps plan to make Roo skipper and other red-hot gossip
(07-09-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has shelved plans to make Wayne Rooney Manchester United’s next captain. This comes after a newspaper on Sunday exposed the striker’s off-field shenanigans with a high-class prostitute while his wife Coleen was pregnant with their first child. Fergie is said to be “bitterly disappointed” by Rooney’s behaviour and feels he has let his club down. Elsewhere, Bolton defender Gary Cahill's debut appearance as a substitute for England against Bulgaria last Friday means he will now cost potential buyers Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham £17.5m; veteran Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Saar wants a contract extension at the club - by hitting his 30-game target; Arsenal are contemplating a move for Barcelona's 18-year-old defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu; and Serie A side Cagliari are willing to offload Federico Marchetti in January, with Manchester City and Chelsea the latest clubs to be linked with the 27-year-old goalkeeper's signature.

Roo’s been a naughty boy!
(06-09-2010) Wayne Rooney is in the news for the wrong reasons again! On Sunday, the News of the World newspaper published allegations that the Manchester United star bedded a prostitute while his wife Coleen was pregnant with their son Kai. The 24-year-old is said to have had a series of romps with £1,200-a-time hooker Jenny Thompson. "Wayne chased me with sex texts and paid in wads of cash. He didn't seem to care he was betraying Coleen,” Thompson told the paper. "I think he believes he's invincible and untouchable. As a woman, I wouldn't like that done to me - especially if I was pregnant,” she added. In 2004 Rooney had a similar brush with scandal when he admitted visiting a seedy massage parlour in a rundown area of Liverpool.
Johnson hails biggest moment of his career
(06-09-2010) Manchester City starlet Adam Johnson has lablled his first international goal the biggest moment of his budding career so far. The winger got on the score sheet in England’s 4-0 Euro 2012 qualifying game against Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday. "It was a massive moment. To score my first goal in my first competitive game, it's the biggest moment of my career,” gushed the 23-year-old. “Scoring for your country is obviously something everyone dreams about when you're younger and I'm no different,” he added. England play Switzerland on Tuesday in their second qualifying game as they attempt to exorcise the ghosts of the recent World Cup.
Harg and Bebe miss out on CL selection
(06-09-2010) Manchester United have left Owen Hargreaves and new signing Bebe out of their Champions League squad. Hargreaves has only made one substitute appearance for the club in the past two years due to chronic knee knack. There are now serious concerns about his future. Bebe, a recent £7m signing , was curiously omitted as club’s are allowed to name a maximum of 25 players. United have named 24 players. Full United squad: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Neville, Evra, J.Evans, Ferdinand, W.Brown, Smalling, Vidic, O'Shea, Nani, Anderson, Giggs, Park, Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Valencia, Gibson, Berbatov, Rooney, Hernandez, Owen, Obertan. 'List B' players: Macheda, Amos, Fabio, Rafael, Corry Evans, Oliver Gill.
Fab 100% focussed
(06-09-2010) Cesc Fabregas claims he was left with no choice but to remain at Arsenal. The Spanish midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona during the summer. "Barcelona did all that they could to sign me but Arsenal told me I had to stay, that there was no way there were going to let me go,” Fabregas told Spanish newspaper 'Publico' on Saturday. "In the end, I had to stay - but the content of my conversation with Arsene Wenger will remain private. We'll see what happens in the future." The 24-year-old did however promise to give his all for the Gunners this season. “I will be professional and give everything. I will not think about anything else other than Arsenal,” he added. “If I start thinking about the future that will stop me being focused and I will have a bad year."

Houllier mum on Villa role
(05-09-2010) Gerard Houllier has refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with the vacant managerial role at Aston Villa. The former Liverpool boss recently emerged as one of the favourites to succeed Martin O'Neill. "Never and always are two words you can't use in football," Houllier said on Saturday when quizzed about the Villa job. The 63-year-old Frenchman was in the Anfield hot-seat from 1998 to 2004. In 2001 he led the Merseysiders to the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup Treble. After leaving Liverpool, he managed Lyon for two years between 2005 and 2007. He is currently a technical director for the French Football Federation.
United signing insists he’s a winger
(05-09-2010) Manchester United new boy Bebe insists he is more a winger than a striker. The Red Devils signed the Portuguese player from Vitoria Guimaraes recently for £7m although little is known about the former ‘street child’. He recently starred for the Portugal under-21 team against England under-21’s. After the match he insisted he wanted to play on the wing for the Red Devils. "I'm a winger but the coach is the boss. I'm here to help and represent the national team,” he said. "We failed to score but I'm happy and, now I'm here, I hope to come back more often. Hearing the anthem for the national team was something that I've been waiting for a long time." Bebe is set to wear the name Tiago Dias on his shirt at United.
Toure challenges Ade to show his best
(05-09-2010) Kolo Toure has challenged his Manchester City team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor 'to fight for his place' at Eastlands. Adebayor has been warming the bench this season, with City manager Roberto Mancini preferring Carlos Tevez to lead the attack. On Saturday Toure called on his former Arsenal team-mate to prove why City paid £25m for him. "We are all top players here. When you play for a top club you need to fight for your place,” Toure told the Daily Star. "Adebayor had a difficult season last year but he is working hard. He is happy at City and you will see a much better player this year.” He added: “I'm sure he will be one of the best players in England this season - he will be back to his best."
Inter missed out on Reds star

According to reports, the Serie A giants made a move for the Brazilian on transfer deadline day earlier this week. But with so many faces having left Anfield since his appointment, Hodgson was determined to hang on to Leiva even though he is not much of a fan favourite. Inter are now managed by Rafa Benitez, the manager who brought Leiva to Liverpool.
Gunners in for teenage ‘keeper and other red-hot gossip

I almost quit last year – Scholes
(04-09-2010) Paul Scholes is surprised he is still playing football at the highest level. Speaking on Friday, the 35-year-old Manchester United legend said he contemplated retiring at the end of 2009 after a sharp dip in form. "At Christmas last year, I did not think I'd be playing this season. I wasn't playing well enough,” said Scholes. "The season before last I had an injury for three months and then, from Christmas onwards, my form wasn't brilliant.” He added: "I wasn't playing as much as I'd have liked but you must be playing well to be in the team. I set myself high standards. I want to feel as though I am contributing to the team. If I am not doing that, what is the point of being here?" Scholes’ decision to soldier on has been vindicated with a string of sterling displays since then.
Defoe helps Three Lions rediscover their roar
(04-09-2010) England bounced back from their World Cup nightmare in fine style at Wembley on Friday with a 4-0 win over Bulgaria in their opening qualifier for Euro 2012. A sensational hat-trick from Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and a first international goal by Manchester City winger Adam Johnson gave Fabio Capello’s men the perfect start for the tournament which will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney played a vital role in Defoe's second and third goals. Said manager Fabio Capello afterwards: "I played Rooney in a position different than usual. He did very well. He had to stay just in front of the two central midfielders and from this position to go forward and to be free. The quality of Rooney was really high."
I snubbed City – Zlatan
(04-09-2010) Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suggested that he turned down a possible move to Manchester City during the transfer window. The Swedish striker joined Milan last week initially on loan with a view to a permanent move last week after an unhappy spell at Barcelona. On Friday he suggested that he snubbed City because they were not yet in a position to challenge for silverware. "City must fight Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal - sides which took years to build," commented the 28-year-old Ibrahimovic. "City are still a side for the future. I chose Milan because they are a team that can win prizes now. City can wait for the future but I can't."
