United youngster set for loan move
(31-12-2010) Manchester United are set to allow young striker Federico Marcheda to return to Italy on loan. According to the player’s agent, the EPL leaders are keen for the 19-year-old to gain more first-team experience. Fiorentina, Juventus, Lazio and Parma have all been linked with the player when the transfer window opens. "Federico could leave United, that is true, but only on loan," Marcello Bonetto told Fiorentina.it. "The club and Ferguson have absolute faith in Chicco. With the return of Michael Owen, confirmation of Wayne Rooney, plus fine form for Dimitar Berbatov and Hernandez, the space for him in Manchester has been reduced.” Marcheda has scored just once in 12 appearances in all competitions this season. Meanwhile, United have recalled young loanees Joshua King and Ritchie de Laet to Old Trafford form Preston North End.
Special One targets Gunners star
(31-12-2010) Jose Mourinho wants Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas to join him at Real Madrid in the summer. However, the ‘Special One’ has his work cut out because the Gunners skipper played for Real’s fiercest rivals Barcelona as a boy. Fabregas has also long been linked with a move back to Barca. But, according, to new reports, Mourinho is prepared to fight the Catalans for the midfield maestro and will offer defender Ezequiel Garay, midfielders Lassana and Mahamadou Diarra or Gago in part-exchange. "Mourinho has decided to convince Cesc personally he can be the next leader of the team," a Real insider told The Sun newspaper on Friday. Fabregas has made 242 starts for Arsenal since signing as a 17-year-old in 2003.
Red Devils need improved road record - Fletch
(31-12-2010) Manchester United need to radically improve their form away from Old Traford if they are to reclaim the EPL title, reckons Darren Fletcher. Despite remaining unbeaten in the league this season, the Red Devils have recorded just one win on the road this season. "We are confident we will turn these performances into wins and go on a winning run, which we will need to if we are going to win the league," said the hard-working Scottish international on Thursday . "We have played well at some hard places but have conceded late goals that have tainted good performances.” He added: "It shows the concentration levels have to be there. There have been a lot of shock results in the EPL, which proves you need to be fully switched on for 90 minutes." United’s next match is at home against West Brom on Saturday.
It’s United’s title to lose – Kidd
(31-12-2010) The league title is Manchester United’s to lose, reckons Manchester City assistant manager Brian Kidd. The fierce cross-town rivals head into 2011 level on points at the top of the standings, but with United having played two games less. "It's in their hands. You can't get away from that,” said Kidd, who is a former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at United. "They have been round the block and know how to win league titles." City are second (on goal difference from United), two points clear of third-place Arsenal, with Chelsea a further two points off the pace in fourth. Kidd said he regarded Chelsea as the other main contender for the ultimate prize. "It's the same with Chelsea. Not so much so with Arsenal as it's been five years since they were in the mix - but they [Chelsea] know how to go on and win it."
Spanish ‘keeper not keen on United and other red-hot gossip
(31-12-2010) Manchester United target David De Gea has rebuffed an offer to move to Old Trafford. According to reports, the young goalkeeper has made it clear he is eager to stay at Atletico Madrid, saying: "I am very happy ... when things are going well it is not necessary to change anything." Elsewhere, West Ham want Manchester United's Michael Owen and Everton striker Yakubu as they look to drag themselves out of the relegation zone; Liverpool are looking at Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux and could make him their first January signing; Dutch striker Eljero Elia could also be on his way to Anfield from Hamburg, which could leave the way free for compatriot Ryan Babel to leave Liverpool; and Ronaldinho is being offered around England for £7m by AC Milan in the hope of sparking interest from the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

We’ve never been so bad - Cech
(30-12-2010) Chelsea have never been so bad, reckons the club’s star goalkeeper Petr Cech. The Blues have not won in six matches and have only picked up six points from a possible 24. Their 3-1 loss to Arsenal on Monday means they are now languishing in fifth place on the EPL standings with many expecting manager Carlo Ancelotti to get the axe. “"We have stopped doing the things we were doing at the start of the season when we didn't concede goals and we were scoring a lot. We can't find the same rhythm. We're making wrong choices, wrong passes,” said Cech on Wednesday. "Every time we attack we are offside and we are making mistakes too in the defensive third. This is exactly the reason why we are not winning games." Cech’s comments are sure to pile the pressure on under-fire boss Ancelotti.
Why I don’t smile - Super Mario
(30-12-2010) Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, fresh from a stunning hat-trick against Aston Villa on Wednesday, has explained why his goal celebrations are so muted - he is only doing his job! The 20-year-old has now scored eight goals in 11 appearances for the Blues since his big money move from Inter Milan. "I’m always happy, even when I don't smile," Balotelli told www.mcfc.co.uk on Thursday. "But I feel a striker has to score. It is my job. That is why I don't smile. I am still happy and I can score more." The Italian also played down talk that he wanted to return to Italy. "I am very happy even if the journalists in Italy say I want to go to Milan. I am here and I am working hard in training. I want to be an important man for this team and the results are on the pitch."
Roy pleads with angry Reds fans
(30-12-2010) Roy Hodgson has pleaded with angry Liverpool fans to back the club following their shock 1-0 home defeat by Wolves on Wednesday. It was the Reds eighth loss of the season. "The fans have left angry and that's understandable. We've let them down," said 63-year-old Hodgson. "I have to hope the fans will become supporters because we need support. We are not deliberately losing games." He added: "As manager, you take responsibility for that so I have to take that criticism on the chin as well. You have seen these players before. They are just not playing like they have done in the past so I think it is time for the fans to really help as well. It is not for lack of trying that we are not winning matches."
'Becks made me a winner'
(30-12-2010) David Beckham helped Theo Walcott develop the right mentality to get to the very top. Speaking on Wednesday, the young Arsenal speedster said Becks helped show him the benefit of putting in extra time on the training ground. England legend Beckham trained with Arsenal during the MLS off-season. "I practise my crossing and finishing when I can after training,” revealed the 21-year-old. "I remember when David came to train with us; he still practised his free-kicks. It was great for me to see and I learned from it.” He added: "It's something I've worked on and, hopefully, it can continue because I've missed a lot of the season — but I've got nine goals and I'm pleased with that.” Walcott starred in the Gunners 3-1 win over Chelsea on Monday. However, it was only his second EPL start since August due to a spate of injuries.
Spurs lead chase for England legend and other red hot gossip
(30-12-2010) Tottenham are leading the chase for David Beckham’s signature. According to reports, Spurs head a list of six EPL teams attempting to sign the former Manchester United midfielder on a two-month loan deal from LA Galaxy. Elsewhere, Liverpool are set to be sack Roy Hodgson and replace him with Frank Rijkaard; Lassana Diarra will be at the centre of a bidding war in January as Manchester United and Tottenham both prepare bids for the Real Madrid midfielder; Arsenal striker Carlos Vela is being chased by a host of La Liga clubs, including Valencia, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid; new Inter Milan boss Leonardo has earmarked a summer move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres as he seeks to freshen up things at the San Siro; and Manchester United are ready to offer Anderlecht £20m for teenage striking sensation Romelu Lukaku.

Fergie blasts the ref after Brum draw
(29-12-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has blasted the referee after he failed to spot a foul by Nikola Zigic that led to Birmingham’s late equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday. The Red Devils looked to be coasting to victory after Dimitar Berbatov’s 14th goal of the season gave them the lead after 58 minutes. The Blues however snatched a dramatic 89th minute equaliser through Lee Bowyer when substitute Zigic appeared to foul Rio Ferdinand before using his arm to guide the ball into Bowyer's path. "Handball, a foul on the centre-half, he went right through him," Ferguson told Sky Sports 1. "At this level, in a game of that importance, you hope you're going to get a referee that can see that. If he can't, what chance have you got?” He added: "I've got no complaints with my team today, they fought hard, and they worked hard.”
Spurs have gone Dutch
(29-12-2010) Tottenham have embraced the Total Football philosophy of Holland, claims the club’s Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart. Spurs have played an exhilarating style of football this season, catching the eye both domestically and in Europe. And Van der Vaart, signed from Real Madrid on deadline day, has been at the forefront of the entertaining brand of football played by the club. "I think everyone likes Tottenham and the way we play. It is like the Dutch style," commented the 27-year-old on Monday. "Everybody loves Tottenham and in Holland everyone loves to watch Tottenham. That is a main thing but at the end we want to be in the top four and play Champions League every year.” Van der Vaart has also reiterated his belief that Tottenham, who currently sit fifth, can challenge for the title this season. "Of course we can win the league," he added.
United won’t get carried away – Giggs
(29-12-2010) Manchester United will take nothing for granted in their pursuit of EPL honours, says club legend Ryan Giggs. United currently top the standings on goal difference from Manchester City but have played two games less. "We are obviously wary because of the way the league has been this year,” commented the Welshman on Tuesday. "Anyone can beat anyone. We are thankful we remain unbeaten and confidence is high. But we realise that nothing can be taken for granted.” He added: "It is a tough league and we need to be at our best in every game. We hope to get better in the second half of the season.” The 37-year-old also paid tribute to the club’s central defence. "You need stability at the back and we definitely have that. It gives you a platform to go and attack."
Real ace to add steel to United's midfield
(29-12-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has earmarked Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra as the man to add steel to Manchester United’s midfield in the New Year. With Owen Hargreaves looking increasingly unlikely to play for the club again, and with Paul Scholes nearing the end of a distinguished career, French ace Diarra is the front runner to take the Red Devils forward. Diarra has become increasingly frustrated at Real where German World Cup stars Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira are blocking his way into the starting line-up. Real boss Jose Mourinho is likely to let him leave if United fork out £12m. The tough-tackling 25-year-old cost £20m from Portsmouth two years ago. He will however not be available to play for United in this season's Champions League.
Gunners keen on Rovers star and other red-hot gossip
(29-12-2010) Arsenal are hot on the heels of muscular Blackburn defender Chris Samba. According to reports, the Gunners are prepared to pay £8m for Samba. However, if Rovers price the Congolese out of the market they will turn their attention to Werder Bremen centre-back Per Mertesacker. Elsewhere, Celtic manager Neil Lennon is eager to bring out-of-favour Aston Villa duo Richard Dunne and Stephen Ireland to Parkhead on loan; Manchester United are preparing a summer move for CSKA Moscow keeper Igor Akinfeev, who they see as a long-term replacement for current number one Edwin van der Sar; Liverpool have rejected a loan offer from Birmingham City for 24-year-old winger Ryan Babel, who has also attracted interest from West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur; and Juventus are preparing a £27m-offer for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and may also be willing to throw midfielder Felipe Melo into the deal.

Ando set to star – Carrick
(28-12-2010) Michael Carrick has backed in-form Manchester United colleague Anderson to start hitting the back of the net regularly. The Brazilians has scored just two goals in 110 appearances for the Red Devils. But, having started to shoulder more responsibility in United’s midfield now that Paul Scholes nears retirement, Carrick believes the 22-year-old will start to really show why the club paid £18m for him. "Hopefully there are more to come," said the England midfielder. "He has not really mentioned it much. Maybe he is waiting until he has scored a few more. Then we won't be able to shut him up.” Added Carrick: "Ando is just full of life. He bounces around the place. He has been out for long periods but he has come back with a real spring in his step. He is young and his best days are still ahead of him."
This could be pivotal – Wenger
(28-12-2010) Arsene Wenger reckons Monday’s win over Chelsea is a pivotal moment for Arsenal. The Gunners won 3-1 following goals from Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott. The win saw them move back up into second place, behind leaders Manchester United. "It was a double impact," Wenger said. "Mathematically, it keeps us in touch with the leaders of the league, and psychologically, it was important because we were questioned about our capability of winning big games.” He added: "It can be a very pivotal moment, but we have to respond away at Wigan on Wednesday night in a game where we want to turn up and take points. We know to beat the big teams at home will have an important impact on this league."
Ancelotti walking a tightrope
(28-12-2010) Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Chelsea looks bleak following their 3-1 loss to Arsenal on Monday. The result means that the Blues have now gathered a mere six points from a possible 24. Only their South West London neighbours Fulham have a worse record over the same period. Roman Abramovich's patience may now be close to breaking point. Quizzed whether he felt Chelsea’s owner still has faith in him, Ancelotti admitted: "I don't really know. I believe I have his confidence but obviously he will not be happy at the moment.” Added the Italian: "I will take my responsibility but this is a question you have to ask him. I'm not afraid about my job. Everyone said I did a fantastic job last year. We have to do better. It's not usual Chelsea cannot win for six games." The result leaves Chelsea six points behind leaders Manchester United.
Evra vows to ‘bug’ Berba to big goal tally
(28-12-2010) Dimitar Berbatov will be “bugged”into netting over 25 goals this season, insists his Manchester United teammate Patrice Evra. This comes after the moody Bulgarian struck twice in the Red Devils 2-0 Boxing Day win against Sunderland. He has now scored 13 goals this season. "We argued a bit in training when he was missing a goal. But he said 'Don't worry, I will score in the game'. And he showed me that,” said Evra on Monday. "I keep moaning at him when he doesn't score and he moans at me when I miss a cross or something like that. It is a joke between me and him.” And with Wayne Rooney having failed to score from open play this season, Berbatov is carrying the load.” He is working hard. He is a good guy and different class." United’s next game is against Birmingham on Wednesday.
Now lil’ Mickey O could go And other red-hot gossip
(28-12-2010) Just days after Sir Alex Ferguson said Michael Owen would not be leaving Manchester United in January, reports have emerged that the former England striker could be headed for the exit door. Apparently the 31-year-old is keen to hook up with former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier at Aston Villa. Elsewhere, Panathinaikos striker Djibril Cisse has been spotted having lunch with Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, fuelling speculation that the Frenchman could return to Anfield in January; Manchester City have been linked with Real Madrid centre-back Pepe after the Portuguese international demanded a threefold pay rise in contract talks with Bernanbeu officials; Manchester City are ready to let Wayne Bridge join West Ham - if the price is right; and Liverpool may also attempt to persuade winger Hatem Ben Arfa, currently on loan at Newcastle from Marseille, to opt for a permanent switch to Anfield at the end of the season.

Owen is going nowhere – Fergie
(27-12-2010) Michael Owen is going nowhere, insists Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Recent reports have suggested the former England striker could be loaned out by the Red Devils next month. The 31-year-old, who is back to fitness after a hamstring problem, is also nearing the end of his contract at Old Trafford, fuelling rumours they could offload him in January rather than let him leave for nothing in the summer. Fergie however is having none of it. "He is looking really good," Ferguson told the Mail on Sunday. "He has trained really well this week. People may have forgotten just what a good player Michael is.” He added: "He's had a nightmare time with a bad hamstring injury but now he deserves a change of luck. If he can stay fit, I believe he has an important part to play for the club.”
‘Chelsea clash to shape Gunners season’
(27-12-2010) Arsenal can prove their title credentials by beating Chelsea on Monday, says Gunners manager Arsene Wenger. The North Londoners lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in October and were booted off the EPL’s top spot after losing 1-0 at Manchester United in their last outing. Wenger however claims Monday's showdown could shape the rest of his team's season. "Of course this is a must-win game. We have mixed feelings because we came out of both games against Chelsea and Man United this season thinking we could have won,” said Wenger on Friday. "We have a good opportunity to show that in the coming months and that our improvement is bigger than any other team because we are a very young side.” He added: "It's about how well we respond to what happened to us at Chelsea and Man United that will be the decider for our season.”
‘appy ‘arry to be tight fisted in January
(27-12-2010) Harry Redknapp is happy with his current Tottenham squad and won’t be whipping out the cheque book in January – unless a “special player” becomes available. Spurs currently lie fifth on the EPL standings and have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League. "We've got so many players here it would be hard fitting anybody in,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News on Friday. "We're not too desperate for anything. We're more than strong everywhere so unless it's someone who's a bit special I don't think we'll be doing too much.” He added: "If someone's there that we feel can make the difference - it might just be a character or leader or somebody who can give you something at the club. If that type of person's available then we'd be interested, but at the moment we're not closing in on anything."
Hammers to defy history – Grant
(27-12-2010) West Ham boss Avram Grant believes the Hammers are set to stage a great escape and will avoid relegation this season. Grant is also well aware of the statistic that only one club bottom of the EPL at Christmas has survived - but is relishing the challenge of making West Ham the second. "For me, what has happened in the past is good and tradition is good but things happen that didn't happen in the past,” said Grant on Sunday. "Nobody thought a guy could run a mile in under four minutes because nobody had done it before, so there are a lot of things that nobody has done before but we want to do it and we can do it." The East End club, who have languished at the bottom of the EPL for much of the season, were buoyed by a 3-1 win over Fulham on Sunday.
Reds line-up Hodgson replacement and other red-hot gossip
(27-12-2010) Didier Deschamps is top of the list to replace under pressure Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson. According to a report by the News of the World on Sunday, the captain of France’s 1998 World Cup winning side will replace the 63-year-old Englishman unless there is a clear change in fortune for the Merseysiders over the next few weeks. Deschamps currently manages French champions Marseilles. Elsewhere, Manchester City could turn their attentions towards Benfica's Paraguay international striker Oscar Cardozo after being warned off a move for Porto's Brazilian star Hulk; Blackburn Rovers are interested in signing Los Angeles Galaxy's David Beckham in the January transfer window as the MLS season comes to an end; and Manchester United have joined the race to sign Belgium international winger Eden Hazard for a fee of about £20m from French side Lille.
Blues have enough depth – Ancelotti
(26-12-2010) Chelsea’s squad can cope with the demands of a sustained title push, reckons manager Carlo Ancelotti. Question marks have been raised over the Stamford Bridge outfit’s ability to cope with four games in 10 days over the Festive Sesaon. "We had a problem because we had, at the same time, a lot of players injured," said Ancelotti, whose side have won just one of their last seven league games to slump from top to fourth. He added: "When you are not in a good moment, it's very difficult to put in the young players because you don't want to put responsibility on their shoulders. But now it's different. The squad is good, the players are in good condition, players without injury, and the squad is enough in this moment to play this game well - at our best." Chelsea’s next game is against Arsenal at the Emirates on Monday.
Inter announce Benitez’s replacement
(26-12-2010) Reigning European champions Inter Milan have appointed Leonardo as their new manager. The former Brazilian star replaces Rafa Benitez who was sacked earlier this week. The 41-year-old, who recently managed Inter’s fierce rivals AC Milan, will take up the reins on 29 December and his contract runs until June 2012. "We believe Leonardo has the class and experience of a champion and his mentality will get the team together to get results," Inter said on their website. Leonardo will take charge of a side seventh on the Serie A table, 13 points adrift of leaders AC Milan. Benitez was sacked after six months in the job after asking the Inter board to back him in the transfer market.
Silva preparing for strange Xmas
(26-12-2010) Manchester City star David Silva says it will be strange to be playing football over the Christmas period. The Spanish World Cup winner joined City from Valencia in the summer for £24m and is accustomed to having time off over the Festive Season where La Liga shuts down. “Barcelona and Real Madrid are going well and have built up quite a lead," said Silva of his former league. “In England it is far more hard fought. You could have any number of teams getting up there near the top. That makes for a more entertaining and enjoyable league." He also acknowledged that he has settled in well in England. "But I owe a lot to my team-mates because they helped make the process a lot quicker.” He added: "The games in England are very competitive. So many sides can make life very hard for you. It’s a real challenge.”
Wenger fires back at Nani
(26-12-2010) Arsene Wenger has fired a broadside at Manchester United midfielder Nani after the Portuguese star recently wrote off the Gunners chances of mounting a sustained challenge for the EPL title. Suggesting the winger has become a bit too big for his boots, Wenger said: “Everybody has a different opinion in this league and nobody is a prophet. We live a society where everybody knows everything and it looks like it's a shame to say 'I don't know'.” He then added” "I don't know who will win the league. I managed 1,600 games so if Nani knows he must be 1,600 times more intelligent than I am." The North Londoners currently trail EPL leaders Manchester United by two points but have played a game more. Arsenal’s next game is against Chelsea on Monday.
Reds in for Dutch star and other red-hot gossip
(26-12-2010) Liverpool are set to make an £8.5m offer for striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel who currently plays for Dutch club Utrecht. Van Wolfswinkel has hit 11 goals in 17 games for Utrecht this season. Elsewhere, Manchester United are eyeing Real Madrid's French international midfielder Lassana Diarra, who previously played for Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth; Manchester City are in talks with Bordeaux for French international defensive midfielder Alou Diarra; Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out a move for David Beckham because the Frenchman does not have room for the 35-year-old in his squad; Newcastle want England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips on loan from Manchester City in the January transfer window; and Liverpool are seeking to put together a deal to sign Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko which could include a part-exchange deal with Ryan Babel and Daniel Agger.

Blues clash to define season – Wenger
(25-12-2010) Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea on Monday night will play a crucial role in defining the Gunners season, reckons manager Arsene Wenger. Arsenal have already suffered defeats to both league title rivals Chelsea and Manchester United this season, with Wenger insisting their response to those setbacks will be key to their title aspirations. “Of course this is a must-win game," the Frenchman said on Friday. "We have mixed feelings because we came out of both games against Chelsea and Man United this season thinking we could have won and that there wasn't a difference between the teams.” He added: "We have played Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool away so our home form in these kind of games will be decisive. We face a big challenge.” Arsenal have lost their last five clashes with Chelsea, leaking 13 goals in the process.
‘Gunners to feel force of Chelsea’s might’
(25-12-2010) Arsenal will feel the full force of Chelsea’s might on Monday, claims Blues defender Ashley Cole. The EPL champions have gone through a patchy period in recent weeks and have slipped to fourth on the league standings. Cole, however, is confident they are more than capable of repeating last season's 3-0 scoreline at the Emirates — especially with Frank Lampard, John Terry and Michael Essien back to full fitness. "We've been disappointing in our last six games and it's a big contrast to how we started the season,” commented Cole on Friday. "But we have a lot of big players back to fitness and it's going to give us a boost.” He added: “Any team who has their top players out is going to be affected. "The players who have come in have done a good job but you're always going to miss the likes of JT, Lamps and Essien.”
Park expects United to be top when he returns
(25-12-2010) Manchester United will still be top of the EPL when he returns from international duty in February, claims the club’s hard-working midfielder Park Ji-Sung. Park is set to feature in the club’s Boxing Day fixture against Sunderland before heading for Qatar to play for South Korea in the Asian Cup. "I totally believe we will still be number one when I come back," said Park, who has scored six goals this season. "I have no doubts we will be in the same position as we are at the moment.” He added: "Playing for the national team is an honour but I am going to miss several games, so it is quite disappointing. But Manchester United have a big enough squad to be very strong and they will do well without me."
Red Roy pleads with Lady Luck
(25-12-2010) Roy Hodgson believes a small slice of luck is all Fernando Torres needs to turn his nightmare season around. And with the Reds winning only once away from home this season, Hodgson knows that he needs the Spaniard firing to turn things around. "The case all through the season is we have not been very lucky in front of goal. I don't think our goal return is a fair measure of what we have created,” said Hodgson ahead of the club’s Boxing Day clash with Blackpool. "We have had our chances, we have created the danger but we have not converted as many of those occasions as we should have done.” He added: "The players are very aware of it because we do have goalscorers in the team and have one of Europe's best in Torres.” Liverpool currently lie in ninth place on the EPL standings.
Villa could let star winger leave and other red-hot gossip
(25-12-2010) Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has admitted that the club’s star winger Ashley Young may be offloaded in January if the money is right. Manchester United and Liverpool have both been linked with the England international. "In January the best clubs keep their best players but you never know if someone comes with crazy money," said Houllier on Friday. The 25-year-old has 18 months left on his current contract. Elsewhere, Liverpool are considering a move for Manchester City's Michael Johnson; Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is busy preparing a bid to bring Rangers star striker Kenny Miller to St Andrew's; Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has opened the door for Milan Jovanovic to leave Anfield; and Tottenham are in the frame to sign Fenerbahce striker Semih Senturk which could hasten Robbie Keane's exit out of White Hart Lane.

Reality check for Super Mario
(24-12-2010) Boastful Mario Balotelli has received a dressing down from Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini. This comes after the 20-year-old claimed not to have heard of Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, the player who finished runner-up to him in the Golden Boy award, and to be nearly as good as Lionel Messi. Mancini has hit back by telling Balotelli to back up his words with consistent displays - and curb the temper blighting his game. "Only if you play well in every match can you say these things," said Mancini. "It is good when a player has confidence in himself. Mario Balotelli has everything you need to be one of the best players in the world. But he must improve and he must show it." Balotelli has only shown flashes of brilliance since his £24m summer arrival at Eastlands from Inter Milan.
Fergie talks up Black Cats threat
(24-12-2010) Manchester United are extremely wary of high-flying Sunderland, claims Sir Alex Ferguson. The league leading Red Devils clash with the Black Cats at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. Sunderland recently beat Chelsea 3-0 away, a performance Fergie describes as perfect. "In all the time I have been at Manchester United, I could probably point to six perfect performances," said the Scot on Thursday. "Steve will look at that in the same way. They were absolutely brilliant and could have won by six or seven.” He added: "It is a reminder that we’re dealing with a team that has that kind of ability and drive at the moment. We are in for a particularly hard game." In addition to knocking over Chelsea, Sunderland have also beaten Manchester City this season, and have drawn games with Arsenal, Tottenham and United.
Tevez asked to apologise
(24-12-2010) Carlos Tevez has been asked to apologise to the Manchester City faithful in order to restore his standing amongst the supporters. This comes after the club captain handed in a written transfer request recently only to do a sensational about-turn earlier this week and commit to the club. “Maybe he should apologise," said City manager Roberto Mancini on Thursday, who added that he feels City's fans are nevertheless not too disaffected with the South American, who retained the captain's armband for Monday's home defeat to Everton. "It is important now that Carlos plays well and scores goals. But the fans still love him."
Spurs must get meaner – VdV
(24-12-2010) Tottenham need to get meaner if they are to challenge for league honours reckons star midfielder Rafael van der Vaart. Spurs head into the festive period in fifth position on the back of an eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions. But with defeats to lowly teams like West Ham and Wigan earlier this season, van der Vaart knows that success against the division's poorer teams is a must in order to ensure they at least qualify for next year's Champions League. "We have to win our games and have confidence that we will be in the top four,” said the Dutch international on Thursday. "It will be hard work. There are a lot of good teams but we play well against the big teams and some of the small clubs we have our problems." Spurs clash with Aston Villa, Newcastle, Fulham and Everton over the coming two week period.

Red Roy unfazed by Benitez rumours
(23-12-2010) Roy Hodgson has shrugged off the ‘bring back Rafa Benitez’ campaign currently doing the rounds on Merseyside. Former Reds boss Benitez was sacked by Inter Milan earlier this week and has been linked with a surprise return to Anfield as a replacement for the battling Hodgson. One online poll had 65% of respondents expressing their desire to see Benitez back at the helm of Liverpool. But Hodgson remains unfazed. "This job will always be linked with lots of people. When you are in one of the top jobs in the country it would be very strange if there were not other people being linked with my job,” commented Hodgson on Wednesday. Benitez left Anfield in June, when former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett were still in charge, with a huge pay-off after a seventh-place EPL finish.
It’s a two-horse race – Nani
(23-12-2010) Nani believes the league is a two-horse race between Manchester United and Chelsea. As things stand just three points separate the top four teams heading into Christmas. Nevertheless, the Portugal international has written off the chances of Arsenal and Manchester City, claiming that only Carlo Ancelotti's Blues can stop United. "I no longer see anybody winning the Premier League this season outside of Manchester United or Chelsea. Hopefully, it will be United," said Nani on Wednesday. Turning his attention to his own improved form, the 24-year-old feels the departure of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo has given him the chance to flourish. "It is easier for me to stand out now that Cristiano has left the club. He is a fantastic player who got all the attention and deservedly so. But it is also true to say that, when he left United, it freed up space for other players to shine.”
City must smash record to land Dzeko
(23-12-2010) Manchester City have been told that they must smash the British transfer record if they want to land Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg. According to reports, the Bundesliga club have slapped a massive £38.5m price tag on the head of the Bosnian sensation. The 24-year-old has scored an incredible 65 goals in 109 appearances for Wolfsburg, a club managed by former England boss Steve McLaren. Dzeko has scored 10 goals in 17 league games this season, despite the club struggling in 13th place in the Bundesliga. City currently hold the British transfer record after buying Robinho on transfer deadline day in August 2008 for £32.5m from Real Madrid.
Little Mickey O raring to go
(23-12-2010) Manchester United striker Michael Owen is fit and raring to go ahead of the club’s hectic list of Festive Season fixtures. The former England international has not featured for the Red Devils since suffering a hamstring injury in the goalless draw at Sunderland in early October. United face Sunderland again at Old Trafford on Boxing Day before traveling to Birmingham two days later and then West Brom on New Year's Day. "I'm fit and I've been in full training for three-and-a-half weeks,” Owen told the club's website www.manutd.com on Wednesday. "The hard bit now is getting back into the side, trying to force my way back into the squad. That's not easy at Manchester United." Owen added: "There are that many quality players at United that you're given as much time as you need to come back from injury.”

Scrooge Wenger sticking to his Guns
(22-12-2010) Arsenal will not be spending loads of cash in the January transfer window, with manager Arsene Wenger insisting the Gunners will "respect our budget". The French coach, who prefers investing in youth to buying expensive established players, is under pressure because the club have not won a trophy since 2005. Many of the club’s fans believe this is because of Wenger’s reluctance to land big-name players. "We respect our budget. You look at clubs who lose £100m or £150m and if we do that, then we go bust. It's as simple as that. We pay what we can afford,” said Wenger in an interview with Al Jazeera TV. "I'm amazed that people are amazed that we do that. I think what is surprising is that people don't respect that.” He added: "The beauty of the competition and this club is to be successful while respecting the financial balance.”
Super Mario: Jack who?
(22-12-2010) Manchester City bad boy Mario Balotelli claims to have never heard of budding Arsenal talent Jack Wilshere. After collecting Tuttosport's ‘Golden Boy’ trophy as the best player under the age of 21, Balotelli said he had never heard of fellow contender Wilshere. "I am delighted to receive this award," Balotelli told Tuttosport. "Who should have won this award but me? Two years ago I finished sixth and a year ago fourth. It was finally my turn.” He added: "I don't know who Wilshere is but the next time I play against Arsenal I will keep a close eye on him!" The former Inter Milan star then turned his mind to the prospect of even greater success. "My aim is that this prize will, in the near future, transform itself into the Golden Ball Award," he added.
Glazers set to cash in – report
(22-12-2010) The Glazer family, the current owners of Manchester United, are set to flog the club to the Qatari royal family, according to a report in Wednesday’s issue of The Sun newspaper. "It's no secret that, at some time, the family will sell,” United non-executive director Mike Edelson is quoted as saying. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, head of the Qatari royal family, is believed to be prepared to pay £1.5billion for the club. The Glazer family bought the Red Devils for £790m five years ago. Should they sell, they stand to double their money. Edelson has been a close confidant of the Glazers since they took over the club in 2005.
Carrick warns Red Devils against complacency
(22-12-2010)Manchester United must guard against complacency if they want to sustain their EPL title challenge, reckons the club’s holding midfielder Michael Carrick. Following a host of draws in the early part of the season, three successive wins have catapulted the Red Devils to the top of the league, two points ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City, with a game in hand. "You hope that earlier spell is behind us but it's never far away if you start to take your foot off the pedal,” commented Carrick on Tuesday. "A couple of poor performances, and bad results aren't far behind. That's what keeps you on your toes.” He added: “You've got to keep the standards high, and that's been the strength of this club over the years, maintaining that quality.”
City set to spend big and other red-hot gossip

Kuyt looking for strong run of form
(21-12-2010) Dirk Kuyt reckons Liverpool can make a significant move towards the top four over the festive period. The Merseysiders play four matches in 11 days, including clashes at home against Wolves and Bolton and away trips to Blackpool and Blackburn. "This period is one of the most important of the season," said the Holland international on Monday. "If we can produce a good run I'm sure we will be up near the top four.” He added: "I'm sure a lot of the top teams will drop some points this month. If we could get four good results in a row, then who knows? Certainly the gap will be closer." The Reds are currently nine points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
Tevez makes sensational about turn
(21-12-2010) Carlos Tevez on Monday sensationally withdrew his much publicised transfer request and will remain a Manchester City player for the foreseeable future. The 26-year-old striker, who joined City in July 2009, said earlier this month that he wanted to leave after falling out with club officials. "Carlos and the club are keen to focus on the opportunities ahead and his contract remains unchanged," said City in a statement. Manager Roberto Mancini added: "Carlos is a world-class player whose contribution since he joined the club has been invaluable. I am pleased that we are now able to focus on pure football matters and to be able to look forward to Carlos continuing to play a significant role in the club's progress." The announcement also sees the plucky Argentine retain the club captaincy.
Moyes praises Toffees resilience
(21-12-2010) David Moyes has praised the resilience of his Everton charges after their 2-1 away win over Manchester City on Monday. The Toffees netted two goals inside the first 20 minutes at Eastlands and held on for the win despite Victor Anichebe's red-card and Phil Jagielka's own goal. "The players did me proud with their display, especially in the opening 15 or 20 minutes of the match,” Moyes told BBC Sport afterwards. "We know the statistics will be about Man City's passes and possession, but the one that mattered was that we got two goals.” Moyes added: "The resilience and competitiveness of the team were excellent. When we come up against the top teams we give them a good game. Man City played well at times tonight but we defended even better." The win lifted Everton up to 14th place in the EPL.
Blues to make mega move for Modric
(21-12-2010) Diminutive Tottenham midfielder Luca Modric has emerged as Chelsea’s top transfer target for next season. The Croatian has been in top form for Spurs this season as they topped their Champions’ League group ahead of reigning champions Inter Milan. According to reports this has made Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti really take notice. "I was with Ancelotti for lunch. I was very proud when I heard what he said about Modric,” the player’s close friend Zdravko Mamic told The Sun newspaper on Monday. "Luka is top of his list, his first pick when it comes to new signings. I am not Modric's agent - I am just his friend - but I am very proud.” Mamic, the powerful Dinamo Zagreb vice-president, engineered the Croatian star's £17m move to Tottenham two years ago. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will be bracing himself for a £30m bid from the champions.

Hammers star too expensive for Spurs
(20-12-2010) Tottenham will not make a move for Scott Parker in January because West Ham want too much money for the England midfielder. Spurs have long been linked to the 30-year-old who has starred for the Hammers this season despite the club’s lowly EPL position. "We haven't made any move for him. Midfield is the only area where I don't have many options, we are really short there,” Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told the Sunday Mirror newspaper. "I like Parker, but he belongs to West Ham. He will be 31 next birthday and they will want £15m. Our chairman wouldn't buy players of that age, on big wages with no sell-on." Redknapp did however concede that the club may sell Jamie O'Hara to the Hammers. "O'Hara needs to play. He would be better off playing somewhere than not playing. He would do a good job for someone in the Premiership."
Nasri has a dig at United
(20-12-2010) Arsenal sensation Samir Nasri has had a dig at title rivals Manchester United, claiming the Red Devils stood no chance of beating Chelsea in the match that was cancelled on Sunday due to the ‘Big Freeze’ that has hit Britain. The Gunners midfielder also reckons United will struggle to win their game in hand at Blackpool. "I think the title is definitely within our reach. For a start, United were supposed to play against Chelsea and I couldn't see them winning that,” said Nasri on Sunday. "I also think their game in hand isn't a foregone conclusion because winning at Blackpool is not easy.” He added: "I really think we have quality and we've got the maturity now that we were lacking before. We'll see how we cope with all the matches over Christmas and we will get a clearer idea after that - but I'm full of confidence."
Mancini set to strip Tevez of captaincy
(20-12-2010) Roberto Mancini is set to strip Carlos Tevez of the Manchester City captaincy. The Argentine striker recently handed in a transfer request, claiming he was homesick and wanted to return to his native Argentina. Now manager Mancini is considering handing the skipper’s armband to Kolo Toure or Vincent Kompany. Toure served as captain under the club’s previous manager, Mark Hughes and looks more likely to lead the club, who are third in the EPL table on 32 points - two points behind leaders Manchester United but having played a game more. Tevez joined City in 2009 and scored 29 goals in his debut season at Eastlands. He has managed 10 in 18 appearances since Mancini handed him the captaincy prior to the start of the current campaign. Tevez is just 17 months into a five-year contract.
Rio scoffs at United doubters
(20-12-2010) Rio Ferdinand claims everyone connected with Manchester United Football Club is convinced they have the quality to reclaim the EPL title this season. Despite still being unbeaten in the league, and topping the standing’s, many people are still doubting whether the 18 times champions have what it takes to lift the crown they lost last season to Chelsea. “In the last four seasons we won the title three times. But on each of those occasions we didn't start the following season as favourites. That tells you something. People either don't think we are as good as we are, or don't want us to be. But within the walls of Manchester United, we know. And we also know what we are capable of,” commented Ferdinand on Sunday. "We have not had the greatest season yet in terms of consistency but that is what we are aiming for."
Reds set to sell Serbian flop and other red-hot gossip
(20-12-2010) Liverpool look set to sell Milan Jovanovic in the January transfer window. The Serbian striker has failed to make an impact at Anfield since joining in the summer. Elsewhere, Bayern Munich are lining up a £9m move for Everton defender Leighton Baines; Chelsea have put a possible £15m move for Blackburn's Phil Jones on hold after his season-ending knee injury; Everton may be in the hunt with Celtic for Stephen Ireland, after he revealed he wants to leave Aston Villa; and Tottenham will test Newcastle's resolve to hang on to Andy Carroll in January with a £20m bid that will include Spurs strikers Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane as bait.

Big Freeze causes fixture chaos
(19-12-2010) The ‘Big Freeze’ in England has caused the cancellation of Sunday’s big clash between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. The Blues cited heavy snow in London, saying in a statement: "Sunday's game at Stamford Bridge has been postponed following consultation with the police and the local authority. There has been heavy snow in London on Saturday." Also postponed on Sunday were Blackpool's match at home to Tottenham as well as the third and final EPL clash between West Brom and Wolves. This follows the cancellation of Saturday’s matches at Arsenal, Wigan, Liverpool and Birmingham due to the foul of the weather.
Reds legend hails ‘top class’ Pep
(19-12-2010) Liverpool legend Ray Clemence has hailed the talents of the club’s current goalkeeper Pep Reina. Clemence’s comments come after the Spanish stopper broke another of his long-standing club records earlier this month by becoming the fastest keeper in Liverpool's history to notch 100 league clean sheets. It took Reina 198 games to take the record away from Clemence, who reached his ton in 217 outings. “It's nice to have records but they are there to be broken,” said Clemence on Saturday. "Anyone who keeps that many clean sheets in so few games has proved himself to be top class.” He added: "Pepe really is a world-class goalkeeper and is still young. He has all the attributes a modern goalkeeper needs — he has great reflexes and is very brave.”
Red Roy determined to strengthen squad
(19-12-2010) Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is set to be a busy man during the January transfer window. Poor form and a string of injuries have plagued the Merseysiders this season. "With injuries to Jamie Carragher (shoulder), Daniel Agger (calf), Jay Spearing (ankle) and Steven Gerrard (hamstring) we have been hit hard in certain areas,” commented Hodgson on Saturday. “I can only hope if there is any possibility of transfers in the January window that will help us and make us a better team, I will be given the opportunity to sign those players.” He added: "My ambition to improve the squad is shared by the owners but we will have to wait and see what possibilities are there — if any — and what they would like to do." Liverpool are currently struggling in 9th place on the EPL standings.
Inter break African hearts
(19-12-2010) Inter Milan were crowned World Club Champions on Saturday with an easy 3-0 win over African champions TP Mazembe in Abu Dhabi. It was the Italian club’s first trophy under new manager Rafa Benitez. Samuel Eto'o set up Goran Pandev's opener before adding the second himself with Joseph Biabiany's late third wrapping up the victory for the Nerazzurri. DRC club Mazembe had earlier beaten Brazil's Internacional to reach the final. Inter's triumph sees them add another trophy to go with the Champions League, Serie A, Italian Cup, European and Italian Super Cups that they already hold. However, all those trophies were won under previous manager Jose Mourinho.
Tevez saga takes bizarre turn and other red-hot gossip
(19-12-2010) In some bizarre news, the Carlos Tevez saga took an interesting twist on Sunday when he was linked with a return to Manchester United. The Argentine left United in 2009 in what was supposed to mark a shift in power amongst the Manchester clubs. Now the Mail on Sunday newspaper claim he could move back to Old Trafford because he cannot work under City boss Roberto Mancini. Elsewhere, Chelsea are also said to be chasing Tevez who they want to pair up front with Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko; Manchester City will try to prise Fernando Torres from Liverpool in January as a replacement for Tevez; Barcelona are planning an audacious £85m summer swoop for Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Liverpool striker Torres; and Liverpool are keen to sign Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge on loan with a view to a £5m transfer.

Roo and Lamps are spot on
(18-12-2010) Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard have both vowed to step up and take penalties for their respective teams when Manchester United and Chelsea clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. This comes after Rooney missed a spot kick in the Red Devils win over Arsenal earlier this week. Lampard declared he would also step up to the spot after Didier Drogba's recent howler at Spurs. "Of course I have no problems with that. I know players miss penalties. I'm just hoping the next one I score," Rooney told The Sun newspaper on Saturday. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Lampard is the club’s primary penalty-taker. “The only reason he didn't take the one at Tottenham was because he had been out for such a long time. I don't know if Drogba is happy with that or not. I hope so." United have not won at Stamford Bridge since April 2002.
Spurs happy with ‘tough’ CL draw
(18-12-2010) Tottenham are confident they can progress in the Champions League despite being handed a tough draw on Friday. The competition debutants, who topped their group ahead of reigning champions Inter Milan, face AC Milan in the last 16. Spurs manager Harry Redknap is however relishing the clash with Milan who are currently six points clear at the top of Serie A. "It will be a great game. I would have taken AC Milan before the draw. They are leading the league in Italy but it has the makings of a great game over two legs. I'm looking forward to it." The last 16 round of matches take place in mid-February. Before then Spurs have 10 domestic matches to concentrate on. "It's a way off," added Redknapp. "We can put it to one side and concentrate on the league for now.”
Red Devils to miss midfield kingpin
(18-12-2010) Influential Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been ruled out of the club’s crucial clash with Chelsea on Sunday. The 36-year-old veteran has been struggling with a groin problem that has kept him out of action since the Champions League trip to Rangers three weeks ago. "Paul is out of Sunday," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told Key 103 radio on Friday. "We are working towards getting him fit for the New Year matches." Fergie was however optimistic defender John O'Shea would be available for this weekend despite a minor calf problem. Brazilian star Anderson, who has started to show real glimpses of his true potential in recent weeks, is expected to stand in for Scholes. The Red Devils currently top the EPL by two points from Arsenal and four points from Chelsea. They also have a game in hand on both clubs.
Not mission impossible - Fabregas
(18-12-2010) Cesc Fabregas is confident Arsenal can turn the tables on European giants Barcelona in the Champions League. The Gunners lost to the Catalans in the quarterfinals of last season’s Champions League after a 4-1 masterclass at the Nou Camp. The also lost the 2006 Champions League final to the Spaniards. But on Friday Fabregas insisted: "Beating Barcelona is not mission impossible. We can win this. Barcelona are not unbeatable. If they were invincible, they would win the Champions League every year.” Added the sensational midfielder: "Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have knocked them out in recent years. Maybe it's our turn now - and why not? If we want to be champions of Europe, we have to be able to beat anyone and everyone - and that includes Barca." Fabregas was strongly linked with a move to Barca in the summer.
Red Devils set for German raid and other red-hot gossip

Don Fabio going nowhere – agent
(17-12-2010) Fabio Capello has dismissed reports linking him with the Inter Milan and Manchester City managerial posts, vowing to complete his tenure in charge of the England national team. Rumour has it that the Italian has a secret £8m-a-year deal in place to succeed Roberto Mancini at Eastlands, while reports in Italy also suggest he has held talks about replacing Rafa Benitez at Inter. "I honestly don't believe he would sign an agreement with anyone without asking me about it,” said his son and manager Pierfilippo. "I will be really honest and open with you. I know nothing about my father joining a club in Italy, in England or anywhere else and I speak to him every day.” Added Pierfilippo: “I do not believe he has agreed any secret deal with any club. He is not the kind of man who would make a secret agreement like that.”
Arsenal comments were not arrogant – Evra
(17-12-2010) Patrice Evra has fuelled the fire of his feud with Arsenal by claiming he was right in his assumption that they are not a title threat. The French left-back mocked the Gunners for failing to win a trophy since 2005 in the run up to the recent meeting between the two clubs (won 1-0 by United). "I think we confirmed what I'd said before the match,” the 29-year-old told the Sun newspaper on Thursday. "I think Arsenal played really well, you shouldn't neglect that, but we were better. I really say that without any arrogance.” He added: "I heard people saying that what I said was below the belt, but that wasn't my intention. I just wanted to show how much I believe in my team, in their potential and strength.” United currently top the EPL, two points ahead of Arsenal and with a game in hand.
Shawcross deserves respect – Wenger
(17-12-2010) Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has called on the club’s fans to afford Ryan Shawcross respect this weekend. The Stoke defender returns to the Emirates for the first time since his challenge resulted in young Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey suffering a double leg fracture during an EPL game at the Britannia Stadium in February. “What happened in the past, happened in the past,” said Wenger on Thursday. "I don't think there is any need to add any fuel on it and just focus on playing football as we always do.” He added: "What is important is we want to see a football game where both teams play good football. It is Arsenal against Stoke. Every game is different and it is a new start. We want to win the game, focus on it and respect our opponent as we always do."
Blues welcome back star for United clash
(17-12-2010) Chelsea are set to welcome back inspirational midfielder Frank Lampard for the first time since August when they host EPL leaders Manchester United on Sunday. The England midfielder, who has been battling to return from a nagging hernia problem, came through a 60-minute practice match on Thursday. Lampard also played the final 12 minutes of Chelsea’s recent 1-1 draw with Tottenham. His return should provide a huge boost to the Blues, who are on their worst run in the league for more than a decade after failing to win any of their last five games. This has seen them slip from first to fourth on the standings. They are currently three points behind United and have played a game more. Brazilian £18m summer signing Ramires has played in Lampard’s place but has failed to shine as expected.
EPL clubs chase Bayern star and other red-hot gossip

No ‘Hand of God’ to guide Rovers
(16-12-2010) Blackburn Rovers new owners have played down speculation linking the club to Argentina legend Diego Maradona. The ‘Hand of God’ was rumoured to be in line for the vacant managerial position at Ewood Park following the recent sacking of Sam Allardyce. But club chairperson Anuradha Desai on Wednesday rubbished the suggestions. "This is something that because we have offices everywhere somebody spoke about, but it is not true. There is no connection,” she said. "This is something from before we got into the EPL - he knows one of our friends, but nothing beyond that. He is not being considered, not now and forever for the future. I can assure you there is nothing we are having to do with Maradona."
I’ll convince Tevez to stay – Mancini
(16-12-2010) Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is convinced he can persuade Carlos Tevez to remain at Eastlands. The plucky Argentine has threatened to leave the club in recent months to return to his homeland due to homesickness. "I have been in Italy and he has been in Tenerife. But I will meet him on Friday. I won't speak to him before then,” said Mancini on Wednesday. "My opinion is that we have started the season, an important season, and he is an important player for us. I will say that he must stay here." He added: "I think Carlos has more than three years on his contract and I hope he continues to play with us and to score goals for us. It is important that we speak because we have some big games coming up this month. But it will be a private conversation."
Anderson commits to United
(16-12-2010) Brazilian star Anderson has extended his Manchester United contract to 2015. The 22-year-old joined the Red Devils from Porto in 2007 for £18m. He has made 110 appearances for the club since then, despite suffering a serious knee ligament injury last season. "We are delighted he has signed a new contract," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Wednesday. "Anderson has developed tremendously since joining us and he has fantastic potential at only 22; he is going to be a really top player." The player struggled at first with many United fans thinking he was lazy. But in recent months he has started shining. "This is the best club to be at and I would like to thank everyone for the great support I have received over the years," added Anderson.
Club legends dismiss Chelsea’s title hopes
(16-12-2010) Chelsea legends Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf believe the club’s title hopes have gone up in smoke. This comes after the club recent winless streak, their longest in over a decade. "It is hard for me to criticise my old club. But I said at the start of the season I didn't think they would win the championship. I love them, yet I really feel they are at the end of the cycle,” commented Leboeuf on Wednesday. Desailly added: "At the beginning of the season you thought, 'Wow, Chelsea are going to crush everyone from beginning to end'. But in the last six weeks Chelsea have been awful. I am annoyed they haven't been able to bring in a top-class player who can improve the team. Chelsea will be around the top but I am not sure if they will be able to win the title.”

Red Devils were lucky - Arshavin
(15-12-2010) Manchester United were lucky to beat Arsenal in Monday’s top of the table EPL clash at Old Trafford, reckons Gunners midfielder Andrey Arshavin. Arsenal relinquished their lead on the standings to the Red Devils thanks to Park Ji-sung's first-half winner at the Theatre of Dreams. "We didn't deserve defeat, the match was a battle. Both teams fought for the result and unfortunately we lost,” Arshavin told the Arsenal’s official website on Tuesday. "I think Manchester United had more luck than us during the game, but we were not able to create anything special near their goal.” He added: "We didn't play for a draw, we simply acted responsibly in defence and looked for our chances to attack. If it wasn't for a fortunate bounce at the end of the first half, we would have gone in at 0-0 and the second half would have been easier."
Is Ancelotti set to walk?
(15-12-2010) Chelsea players fear manager Carlo Ancelotti is on the verge of quitting, claims a report in Wednesday’s Sun newspaper. Apparently the Italian has become “disillusioned with life at Stamford Bridge” following the sacking of his No.2 Ray Wilkins and will step down at the end of the season. "The atmosphere isn't good at the moment,” a Chelsea insider is quoted as saying. "Everyone is convinced Carlo has had enough, though absolutely everyone is desperate for him to stay. He's very, very popular with the players, who believe that he is an excellent manager." Ancelotti led Chelsea to the Double last season - his first in charge of the club. However, after a sensational start to this campaign they have taken six points from the last 21 to slip to fourth place on the EPL standings.
Red Roy confident he won’t be sacked
(15-12-2010) Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is confident the club’s new owners have faith in his ability to turn things around at Anfield. The 63-year-old Englishman has been under extreme pressure ever since his appointment in July as early results left the club languishing in the bottom three for several weeks. Things then picked up but last Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle left many calling for his head. Hodgson however believes he will turn things around given time and the necessary investment. "I don't have any fears, worries or concerns," he said on Tuesday. “The owners have made it perfectly clear they are in it for the long term and they are going to be patient; they realise it is going to take time. They realise we can't turn things around overnight and they also realise that the team I am working with is not the team I put together.”
Spurs are dark horses – Hutton
(15-12-2010) Tottenham Hotspur can steal the EPL title from under the noses of the top four, reckons the club’s Scottish midfielder Alan Hutton. The North Londoners currently lie in fifth place, seven points behind leaders Manchester United. Arsenal are two points further back followed by Manchester City and Chelsea. Acknowledging that Spurs are outsiders, right-back Hutton refuses to rule out the title ending up at White Hart Lane. "I think it's better that way — there's no pressure on us. Everybody can see how good we're playing and what we're doing. So let the pressure be on them and we'll just play away." Added Hutton: "We're definitely a dark horse in the race. I don't think anybody can really write us off. We'll give it our best and, as we've shown, we don't fear any team that we play. So I don't see why we can't be in with a shout."
Rovers in for el Diego and other red-hot gossip

Wenger bemoans state of OT pitch
(14-12-2010) Arsene Wenger criticised the state of the Old Trafford pitch after watching his Arsenal charges lose 1-0 to Manchester United on Monday. The result, courtesy of a Ji-Sung Park goal, saw the Red Devils displace the Gunners at the top of the EPL standings. "The intensity was high but it was a very bad pitch," said the Frenchman afterwards. "The technical quality suffered as a result and that's why you saw mistakes from both sides." Wenger, whose team has now not beaten title challengers United or Chelsea in 11 encounters, added: "Overall, you have to give credit to United's defensive quality. We tried everything to create chances. I thought we were unlucky to lose the game, but we have to take encouragement from tonight's performance."
Back four magnificent – Fergie
(14-12-2010) Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the club’s back four following their 1-0 win over title rivals Arsenal on Monday. The result, courtesy of a Ji-Sung Park goal, saw the Red Devils displace the Gunners at the top of the EPL standings. "The back four were magnificent," said the Scot after the match at Old Trafford. "Our form is improving and if the defence shows that sort of consistency then we'll do well." United could have made the victory less nervy had star striker Wayne Rooney not fluffed a penalty after Gunners full-back Gael Clichy was deemed to have illegally handled. Ferguson was bemused by his striker's effort. "It was an unusual penalty, normally Wayne always keeps them down, I've never known him to hit one over," he added. United lead Arsenal by two points at the top of the EPL and have a game in hand.
City happy to sue Tevez
(14-12-2010) Manchester City have threatened to sue Carlos Tevez if he walks out on them or retires. The plucky Argentine has cited homesickness as the reason behind his decision to seek a transfer back to his homeland in January. He even turned down a £1.5m bonus back in August as he is so determined to leave. The 26-year-old claims that his refusal to accept the sweetener shows that money is not his main motivation. The City hierarchy however are having none of it. They firmly believe that the homesickness story is merely a con to either extract more money out of the club or to guarantee a big-money move elsewhere, probably to Spain.
Chairman backs under-fire Red Roy
(14-12-2010) Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has backed the club’s under-fire manager Roy Hodgson to turn things around at Anfield. The Reds currently lie in ninth place on the EPL standings , 12 points behind leaders Manchester United. Speaking on LFC TV on Monday night, Werner said: "We just got here, Roy got here shortly before us. Nobody, least of all Roy, was happy with our performance last weekend.” He added: "We have to perform better, especially on the road. We believe in what Roy is doing and we certainly feel like the performance has to improve, and he'd be the first to say that." Regarding the January transfer window, Werner said: "We don't quite know what the situation's going to be in January. It's our first transfer window and it's something we've been studying day and night.”
Real rule out Tevez move and other red-hot gossip
(14-12-2010) Real Madrid have ruled out a move for Manchester City’s want-away star Carlos Tevez. Elsewhere, Chelsea are set to fight it out with many of Europe’s top clubs for Portuguese teenage sensation Joao Reis, who plays for second division club Louletano; Tottenham face competition from Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham and Everton for Paris Saint Germain's Benin international midfielder Stephane Sessegnon's signature; Benfica are prepared to pay Manchester City £8m for striker Roque Santa Cruz to Lisbon when the transfer window opens in the new year; and Frank Lampard claims he is in "no doubt" Chelsea will win the EPL this season despite having stuttered in his absence through injury.

Sagna hits back at Evra
(13-12-2010) Bacary Sagna has lashed out at his international colleague Patrice Evra, accusing the Manchester United defender of having no respect. This comes after Evra openly criticised Arsenal ahead of their Monday trip to Old Trafford, claiming they were in 'crisis' and nothing more than a 'training centre' after going five years without a trophy. "I would never allow myself to criticise another team," Sagna told the Sunday Mirror newspaper. "It shows a lack of respect. Patrice loves to wind people up and raise the temperature. That is his way of doing things, but it does not affect me in any way." United and Arsenal clash at Old Trafford on Monday.
It’s not about money – Tevez
(13-12-2010) Carlos Tevez claims no amount of money will keep him at Manchester City. Speaking to The Sun newspaper on Monday, the plucky Argentine said he would quit football if City did not grant him a transfer in January so that he could return to his homeland to be with his family. “My relationships with certain executives and individuals at the club have broken down and are now beyond repair,” Tevez is quoted as saying. City are believed to have offered the 26-year-old striker a whopping £1.5million bonus to stay at Eastlands which he has turned down. Tevez is the highest paid player at City earning around £200,000 a week.
Blackburn result will spur us on - Giggs
(13-12-2010) Ryan Giggs is hoping Manchester United can use their recent 7-1 thrashing of Blackburn as a springboard for the rest of the season. Speaking ahead of the Red Devils clash with archrivals Arsenal on Monday, Giggs said: "The Blackburn game is the benchmark. Everything clicked that day. Some of the forward play was exceptional. That is what we want and what we know we are capable of doing. In games and training, the idea is to go out and reach it again." United head into the clash with the Gunners at Old Trafford unbeaten this season."We are proud of the unbeaten record," added Giggs. "People have not given us the respect we think we deserve but that is probably down to the manner of our results.” United have drawn seven of their 15 league matches this season but still lie third. They can go top if they beat Arsenal.
Hodgson furious at sloppy defending
(13-12-2010) Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has blasted his charges for the manner of their weekend defeat to Newcastle. The Reds went down 3-1 at St James Park on Saturday, with the Kop boss furious at the sloppy second goal which fired the Magpies to victory. "The major problem was the second goal, which was an unbelievably bad goal to give away,” said Hodgson afterwards. "When you concede a goal like that, it's going to have a major effect on the team's confidence.” Hodgson added: "It will be great to have Steven Gerrard back (next weekend) but even he could not have done anything about the second goal by Joey Barton. That is what is going to haunt me when I travel home tonight and when I wake up in the middle of the night. That has cost us any chance of getting anything."
French club in shock Drogba move and other red-hot gossip
(13-12-2010) Marseille are ready to make an audacious attempt to resign Didier Drogba from Chelsea in January. The 32-year-old Ivorian joined the Blues from Marseille for £24m in 2004. The French club’s manager Didier Deschamps now wants to lure him back so that he can see out his playing days at a club that is very close to his heart. Elsewhere, Everton manager David Moyes has admitted he may have to sell midfielder Steven Pienaar in the January transfer window to revive his ailing strike force; Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is set to make a record-breaking £7m move for Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia; and German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has delivered a crushing blow to Chelsea and Manchester United by pledging his future to Bayern Munich and signing a new contract.

Show Wenger some respect – Fergie
(12-12-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson has pleaded with Manchester United's fans to show Arsene Wenger some respect at Old Trafford on Monday by refraining from their usual disgraceful chanting towards the Arsenal manager. The Frenchman has been singled out by Red Devils fans in recent years with a particularly abusive song, something Fergie finds exceptionally offensive. "I plead to our fans. They have got to stop that kind of thing," the Scot told MUTV on Saturday. "I have faced it myself in the past. I have had some chants at various grounds up and down the country and it is not a nice thing.” Added Fergie: "We have a great rivalry with Arsenal. But it shouldn't extend to those levels, not for Manchester United. I hope we don't hear any more of that." Arsenal currently lead United by a single point but the Red Devils have a game in hand.
United not as scary as before – Nasri
(12-12-2010) Samir Nasri is relishing the thought of strutting his stuff at Old Trafford on Monday. The Frenchman has enjoyed a stellar season so far, banging in 11 goals for Arsenal. The 23-year-old however claims the league leading Gunners have nothing to fear at Old Trafford. "For me Manchester United is not the same team as before, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Tevez it was a little bit scary to play at Old Trafford," Nasri said on Saturday. "Now I don't think offensively they are the same as before, but still they are a good team and when they are 1-0 up it is very hard to beat them. We will see, but we are really confident to get a result out of this game." Arsenal last won at Old Trafford in September 2006.
Blues ready to splash some cash
(12-12-2010) Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti will spend heavily in January – but only if he hasn’t been sacked by then. A poor run of form that has seen the reigning EPL champions take five points from a possible 18 has left the Italian’s job in doubt. Earlier this week he met owner Roman Abramovich to secure cash to strengthen his faltering squad. "We spoke about the situation. If we need to improve our squad in January, the owner is available for us to do this,” said Ancelotti ahead of the club’s clash with Tottenham on Sunday. “Our aim for now is the three games against Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal. Our destiny passes through these games.” He added: "I don't fear for my job. I feel I have the total support of my players, which is very important. I feel I have the total support of my club.”
No crisis at Chelsea – JT
(12-12-2010) There is no crisis at Stamford Bridge, reckons Chelsea captain John Terry. The reigning EPL champions, and last season's ‘Double’ winners have won just one of their last six games in all competitions. They now face a tough run of fixtures with Tottenham up on Sunday before clashes with perennial title rivals Manchester United and Arsenal. "We're going through a bad spell," the defender told www.chelseafc.com. On Saturday. "Man United didn't start too well, Arsenal had a blip and lost at home to teams we wouldn't expect them to, and hopefully this will be the end of our blip otherwise teams are going to pull away.” He added: "We need to go on a good run and now would be the perfect time. We've got big players here who are hopefully prepared to rise to the challenge and put their neck on the line."

No snoods for Red Devils
(11-12-2010) Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has reportedly banned his players from wearing snoods, the latest fashion statement to hit the EPL. The thick, circular neck-warmers are being increasingly used by players in the world’s most exciting league to combat the icy weather that has swept across England over the last couple of weeks. Manchester City’s Argentine striker Carlos Tevez is arguably the most well-known snood wearer, while Arsenal stars Marouane Chamakh and Samir Nasri have also donned the accessory in recent matches. Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand weighed into the debate earlier this week, saying on Twitter: "U won't see a Man Utd player wearing a SNOOD."
Barca finally sign shirt sponsorship deal
(11-12-2010) After 111 years Barcelona have finally sold the commercial rights to the club’s hallowed jersey, signing a record £125m deal with the Qatar Foundation on Friday. The Catalans have paid to carry the Unicef logo for the last five years and the children's charity will share shirt space with the new sponsors. The deal will be worth £25m a year from next season through until 2016. In July, an audit revealed Barcelona's debt to be £370m after a loss of more than £64.36m in the 2009/10 season. The new sponsorship arrangement could free up some transfer funds for coach Pep Guardiola. Manchester United and Real Madrid both earn a little over £20m a year for their jersey rights, while Bayern Munich make closer to £23m.
Fergie set to offer VdS new role
(11-12-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson hopes the club’s legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will play a role at Old Trafford when he retires from competitive football at the end of the season. According to reports, Fergie is set to sit down with the Dutch stopper in the New Year to discuss a role for him in which he can share his wealth of experience. However, it is believed van der Sar’s wife Annemarie, who suffered a brain haemorrhage more than a year ago, would like to move back to Holland.
We must be fearless – Walcott
(11-12-2010) Theo Walcott believes Arsenal need to be fearless if they are to put one over Manchester United on Monday and wreck the Red Devils unbeaten start to the season. The Gunners currently top the EPL standings by a single point from their arch-rivals from Old Trafford. "We must go to Old Trafford and play without fear,” commented Walcott on Friday. "We must enjoy ourselves and express ourselves, then our best performance will come out.” Added the pacy winger: "United are not playing their best but are still there. They haven't lost. Hopefully, we won't catch them on a good day because, right now, they are not playing well but are still second in the league. United have got that game in hand against Blackpool - whenever that will be - so we want to overcome that and stay at the top of the league.”
Gyan on Real’s radar and other red-hot gossip

Wenger ready for Euro heavyweights
(10-12-2010) Arsene Wenger reckons Arsenal can set themselves up for success in Europe by maintaining their challenge for domestic success. This comes after the Gunners finished second in their Champions League group to Shakhtar Donetsk which means that one of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Schalke lie in wait in the last 16. "Let's be realistic, Barcelona are the super favourite at the moment," Wenger said, "but we take what we get and if it is Barcelona, it is Barcelona.” He added: "Overall we are in a strong position in the league, we are qualified in the Champions League, we are in the semi-final of the Carling and we start the FA Cup in January. There are plenty of exciting challenges in front of us, but there is room for improvement and I am confident we will.”
New Toon boss on PR drive
(10-12-2010) New Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has called on the club’s dressing room to get behind him following the shock sacking of the ever popular Chris Hughton earlier this week. Pardew, who signed a massive 5½-year contract, said on Thursday: "The problem I'm going to have initially is the players. I need to get my message across quickly and with clarity so as not to get any resentment at a time when they are doing reasonably well.” He added: "I can't think of a player in the group I've managed so I'm going to be something of a mystery to them. I have to make sure the players understand I'm a fair manager." Many Newcastle fans were angered by Toon owner Mike Ashley’s decision to axe Hughton, the man who had guided them to promotion and a respectable 12th place in the EPL.
We fear Arsenal more than Chelsea – Nani
(10-12-2010) Manchester United star Nani believes Arsenal are a bigger threat to the Red Devils hopes of reclaiming the EPL title than champions Chelsea this season. United clash with the Gunners at Old Trafford on Monday. "Arsenal are a bigger threat than Chelsea now," commented the Portuguese winger on Thursday. "Chelsea have lost a few games and drawn some and their confidence looks a bit low. But Arsenal have been winning and being top of the league gives you great confidence." Added Nani: “ Samir Nasri is the most important player in the Arsenal team. He is a very big danger for us and we have to take care of him." Arsenal currently top the standings by a single point from United. However, the latter have played a game less than the North Londoners.
JT tries to rally the troops
(10-12-2010) John Terry has called on his Chelsea teammates not to surrender their EPL title meekly. After a sensational start to the season, the wheels have come off at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues picking up just five of a possible 18 points on offer in the league. Their next two matches are against fellow title contenders Manchester United or Arsenal. "All the players realise that if we don't start winning again soon then we are going to give it away to United or Arsenal,” said Terry on Thursday. "A few weeks ago we were seven points clear at the top of the table and 20 goals ahead of most teams. Now we are trailing behind in third place and it's not a nice feeling.” He added: "We have to get back to what we were doing earlier in the season - playing without fear.”

Ancelotti laments Blues fear
(09-12-2010) Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti lamented his attacking players “fear of football” following their 1-0 defeat at Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday. The result ended the Blues unbeaten record in Group F. "Defensively there was tactical discipline and I asked for this from my players. We didn't have a lot of opportunities to shoot and score, we need to be clear with the final ball," Ancelotti told Sky Sports afterwards. Quizzed whether he thought his teams standard of play would suffice in their three important EPL games coming up, the Italian added: "We have to improve. We lost confidence up front, now we are a bit afraid to play football, we have to keep going, stay compact and prepare well for the next game." Chelsea, currently third in the EPL, play Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal in their next three games.
Bring on the La Liga giants – RVP
(09-12-2010) Robin Van Persie reckons Arsenal have the self-belief to mix it with any of Europe’s big guns in the knockout stages of the Champions League. This comes after the Gunners beat Partizan Belgrade to advance to the last 16 on Wednesday as the second placed team from Group H. "As a football fan I want Barcelona or Real Madrid, but we'll see what the draw will bring. Those are the games you love to be involved in,” said Van Persie after the game at the Emirates. "We have to believe. Everything starts with belief and if you don't believe, you might as well stop playing football. We do believe we can achieve this year." Possible opponents for Arsenal include now face Barca, Real, Bayern Munich or Schalke.
Strikers must sharpen up – Vidic
(09-12-2010) Manchester United’s strikers will have to be at their sharpest in the next couple of weeks, reckons club skipper Nemanja Vidic. The Red Devils clash with fierce EPL title rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in their next two games. "We had a few good chances against Valencia and played some good football. We didn't take all the chances and in games like the ones against Arsenal and Chelsea, you have to keep your focus,” commented the Serbian defender on Wednesday. "There aren't going to be so many chances. Everything you have, you have to take if you want to win.” He added that wins over the Blues and Gunners would give United a huge edge in the title race. "We would have a big advantage if we won those two games and we'd be in a great position.”
Lucas welcomes Reds link to Samba legend
(09-12-2010) Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva has welcomed the club’s link with Samba legend Ronaldinho. According to reports in Italy, the Merseysiders are set to make a play for the AC Milan star and former World Player of the Year in January. "I am not aware of anything in terms of Ronaldinho signing but I would be very happy if this were to happen," Lucas told Globoesporte. "We started a friendship when we played in the Olympics and for Brazil. It would be nice to play with him at Liverpool.” Added Leiva: "Everyone knows Ronaldinho and they know what he can do." Ronaldinho’s contract with Milan expires at the end of the season.

No instant success – Tevez
(08-12-2010) Carlos Tevez reckons great clubs need time to develop and cannot be built overnight. Expectation at Tevez’s club Manchester City is extremely high because of the vast wealth of the club’s Arab owners. "Three years ago Manchester City were a team who used to finish in the bottom half of the table," Tevez told www.mcfc.co.uk on Tuesday. "Nowadays we are always battling to be in the top four and trying hard to become one of the great teams. That shows we have grown tremendously in just a couple of years.” He added: "But people need to remain very patient. You don't build a great club overnight. Each new player or new manager needs to go through a settling-in period. There are lots of factors involved so you need to keep fighting, just like we have been doing, in order to win a title.”
Reina not concerned with records
(08-12-2010) Liverpool goalkeeper Pep Reina doesn’t care too much for records. This comes after the Spaniard cruised past Anfield legened Ray Clemence in reaching the club's fastest century of league clean sheets in their 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday. Clemence took 217 games, while the Spaniard needed just 198 games to achieve the feat. "Of course records are nice but it is down to the team-mates I've had for the last 5½ years,” said Reina on Tuesday. "I am pleased, but the main thing is the Christmas period, which we know is crucial for everyone.” He added: "We expect Liverpool to be with the top clubs because anything is still possible in this league. We know anyone can beat anyone, we've proved that, but must find the balance that makes us stay up there.” Liverpool currently lie in 8th place on the EPL standings, 10 points off the lead.
Fergie plays down Rio fears
(08-12-2010) Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has played down fears that star defender Rio Ferdinand could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines. This comes after the elegant centre-back limped off the pitch early in the second-half of the club’s 1-1 draw with Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday. "It's a tight hamstring - not a tear or anything like that," said Ferguson afterwards. "I'm sure he'll be OK for Monday. He felt it at half time but wanted to carry on. But we have several days now to make sure he is right." The result means United top their group and will not be drawn against fellow group winners Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the next round. The draw for the last 16 will be made on 17 December and possible opponents for United so far include Inter Milan, AC Milan, Lyon or Copenhagen.
Nasri’s three reasons behind improved form
(08-12-2010) Samir Nasri has given three reasons behind his sensational form for Arsenal this season. “Firstly, I'm getting older so I'm more mature on the pitch. I can anticipate the pass, the shot, everything like that. But I'm also more mature in my life,” said Nasri, who has scored 11 goals this season, on Tuesday. "Before joining Arsenal, I was at Marseille where it was easy for me as I was with my family, I was born there and had played for them since I was nine. I came here on my own and you grow up quickly.” He added: "Secondly, the fact I was able to have a real holiday this summer - after missing out on the World Cup - has made a real difference. And thirdly I’m playing higher up the wing now and the boss asks me to go in behind defenders.”
Keane set for homecoming and other red-hot gossip
(08-12-2010) Out-of-favour Tottenham striker Robbie Keane could be in line for a return to the club where it all started for him – Wolves. According to reports, manager Mick McCarthy wants to bring the Irishman back to Molineux. Keane came through Wolves' academy before making his debut as a 17-year-old and still has a soft spot for the club. Aston Villa and Fulham are also interested in the 30-year-old. Elsewhere, Juventus are prepared to let former Liverpool star Momo Sissoko join Aston Villa for £6m; both Villa and Wigan are both interested in out-of-favour Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak; Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Dinamo Zagreb's teenage defender Sime Vrsaljko; and Real Madrid are looking to sign Liverpool target and France international Yann M'Vila.

Fergie extremely concerned by Hargreaves
(07-12-2010) Sir Alex Ferguson is growing increasingly concerned that midfielder Owen Hargreaves may have finally hit the end of the road in his long battle to regain full fitness. The England international has spent over two years battling chronic knee knack. He made a surprise return to first team action against Wolves in November only to pull a hamstring six minutes into the game. "He has not played for over two years so we would have to be super-optimistic to think everything in the garden was rosy about him making comebacks,” said Manchester United chief Fergie on Monday. "What we are trying to do is help the lad. That in itself is our biggest challenge.” He added: "This hamstring injury is a real kick in the teeth. He was doing so well in training before the Wolves game. He was absolutely superb.”
Magpies sack manager
(07-12-2010) Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has sacked the club’s ever-popular manager manager Chris Hughton. St James Park legend and reserve-team boss Peter Beardsley has been put in charge of first-team affairs. It is alleged that Ashley thought the Magpies players were too powerful and the manager too soft. The newly promoted club currently lie in 12th place in the Premiership. Alan Pardew andMartin Jol appear to be favourites to succeed Hughton. Alan Curbishley and Martin O'Neill have also been linked with the job.
Defensive blow for Gunners
(07-12-2010) Arsenal were hit by the news that star defender Tomas Vermaelen will be out of action until 2011. The Belgian international has been suffering an Achilles injury. "Vermaelen is in a protective boot," said club boss Arsene Wenger on Monday. "We want him back and I hope he will be back soon, but not before January." The 25-year-old was injured during Belgium's Euro 2012 qualifier against Turkey on 7 September. He was initially expected to be out for one week but has not played since. Vermaelen joined the Gunners from Ajax for £10m in 2009 and has been an instant success at the Emirates. Solid in the tackle, powerful in the air and with a good turn of pace, he also poses a threat as a potent goalscorer, in spite of being a central defender.
Berba’s going nowhere – agent
(07-12-2010) Dimitar Berbatov is determined to see out his playing days as a Manchester United player. The moody Bulgarian’s future at Old Trafford has been the source of much speculation in recent months with many suggesting the club could off-load their record signing in January. "I'm pretty sure Dimitar will end his career at United. Alex Ferguson wants him to stay," Emil Dantchev, the player’s agent said on Monday. Bernatov has scored 12 goals this season, including a hat-trick against Liverpool and five against Blackburn, but has still failed to win over the club’s fans. He joined the club for £30.75m from Tottenham in 2008.
Race on to sign Stoke star and other red-hot gossip
(07-12-2010) The race is heating up for the signature of highly-rated Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross. According to reports on Monday, Italian giants Juventus are prepared to offer a £20m package to beat Manchester United and Liverpool to the signature of the tough-tackling defender. Elsehwere, Manchester United are believed to be interested in Shakhtar Donetsk midfield pair Douglas Costa and Willian; Ajax will move for Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner if their Uruguayan goal machine Luis Suarez leaves the club; former Arsenal striker Julio Baptista, now with Italian side Roma, has ruled out a move to Tottenham in January; Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson will swoop on former club Fulham with an attempt to sign attacker Clint Dempsey in January; and Tottenham are also edging closer to concluding a deal for Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar, who is out of contract in the summer and seems certain to leave Goodison.

Mancini blasts ‘selfish’ stars
(06-12-2010) Roberto Mancini has laid into Manchester City’s “selfish” stars. Speaking after the club’s narrow 1-0 win over Bolton on Saturday, the Italian expressed annoyance at the number of chances his expensively assembled team left begging. "You can say we had some bad luck but we must improve. Sometimes we are too selfish,” commented Mancini. "We had maybe 15 chances to score. When you have a lot of chances you think the game is easy. You shoot when it is better to pass the ball. We must improve this situation. It means you can draw when you should have won by three or four goals.” He added: "It was the same at Stoke where we deserved to win but we drew. When we have a chance we must score. If I had played today I would have scored two or three goals." City lie fourth on the EPL standings.
Prove 'em wrong - Wenger
(06-12-2010) Arsene Wenger is determined to prove England’s bookmakers wrong and guide his Arsenal charges to the EPL title. Acknowledging that the Gunners are "not favourites" to be crowned champions in May, the Frenchman insists they are definitely good enough to do so. "We were five points behind the leaders and we had to go to Wolves and to Everton," the Gunners boss said. "So, three weeks later, to be top shows we have kept going and given it our best shot. We are not favourites but we are where we are." He then added: "Look at the odds! You should have looked at the odds as well for the World Cup..." Arsenal currently top the EPL standings by a single point from Manchester United but have played a game more than their fierce rivals.
Ancelotti feeling the heat
(06-12-2010) Carlo Ancelotti is starting to feel the strain at Chelsea. The Italian has presided over a spectacular collapse by the Blues in recent weeks. Saturday’s draw with Everton means they have taken just five points from a possible 18. It is the Stamford Bridge club’s worst run in 10 years and has seen them drop to third on the standings. Asked how he felt after Saturday’s stalemate with struggling Everton, he replied: "Not good, not good at this moment. I'm not relaxed, I don't sleep well." He then insisted: "The problem is on the field, not the bench. I maintain confidence in my players. I maintain trust but it's not a good moment - not for them or for myself.” He added: "We still have the time to come back and play our football, to be competitive in the league and in the Champions League."
