Rooney’s a modern great – Giggs
Ryan Giggs has waxed lyrical about Wayne Rooney. Giggs claims Rooney can sit alongside Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Eric Cantona as a modern-day greats of Manchester United. "I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded with good players throughout my career,” Giggs told the News of the World newspaper. "If Wayne makes a run, I know where he is going because he's such an intelligent player. He shows me where to put the ball, rather than the other way round. He's got unbelievable physical attributes. He's strong, he's quick but he's also a very clever footballer." Rooney’s ability to dominate matches in a manner last seen by the likes of Robson, Keane and Cantona is not lost on Giggs. "It's hard to do when you're a centre- forward. But he's got the capability purely because of his hunger, his desire and his intelligence. I'd say he's a born leader."
Yossi wants Reds exit
Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun is disillusioned with life at the club. According to reports, Benayoun has fallen out with Reds boss Rafa Benitez after being left out of several important fixtures this season. This is despite the 29-year-old being one of the few Liverpool players to shine for the embattled club this season. The Israeli international had a £7million move to Dynamo Moscow blocked by the club this week. Benayoun is contracted to the club until 2013.
Redknapp blasts players
Harry Redknapp has blasted his players for their late collapse at Birmingham on Saturday. The north London club conceded a last-gasp equaliser which dented their hopes of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League. Earlier, Jermaine Defoe’s 17th goal of the season had put them ahead. "We deserved to win and the goal we gave away was horrendous. We defended poorly,” said Redknapp afterwards. "Until we went ahead, Birmingham were never in the game but then we sat off them, invited them onto us and that was the problem." The result leaves Spurs in fourth place in the standings, equal on points with Liverpool. Manchester City are four points behind the pair but have played three games less. Aston Villa are just two points back with a game in hand.
Sagna driven by tragic loss
Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna wants to win the EPL title for his late brother. Omar Sagna was found dead two years ago at the age of 28 following a seizure caused by a previously unknown medical condition. He is now the inspiration that drives Bacary on. "When I was younger I was always scared to lose someone from my family. When it happens you can't do anything apart from live and cope with it. It is still hard but it can also make you stronger as a person,” Sagna told the News of the World. The French international is now determined to dedicate his football honours to Omar. "If I look at something like winning the title then I say we are in with a chance now so I, we, must give it all we can. Who knows what is next, that is life,” he added.
Black Cats want Spurs ace and other transfer gossip
Robbie Keane is on the radar of Sunderland boss Steve Bruce. The Ireland international has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham this season with Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch in sparkling form. Bruce is now preparing a £9m offer for the Tottenham forward with the promise of regular first team football. Elsewhere, rumours are circulating that Michael Owen could be on his way out of Old Trafford in the summer having failed to impress Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson; Wigan will not prevent Maynor Figueroa leaving for "a good club" despite the Honduras international signing a new contract on Friday; and Wolves have held talks with Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts and hope to conclude a £2m deal.

Rafa mum on Juve link
Embattled Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has again poured cold water on reports linking him to Juventus. The Italian giants sacked manager Ciro Ferrara on Friday. Benitez responded to the news by saying he was "proud" to be linked to the Serie A giants as they are a "top side in Europe" but added: "I'm happy here (at Anfield) and want to do a job as best I can." And although some reports in Italy suggested a Juventus delegation had flown to Merseyside this week attempting to secure a new long-term manager, Benitez was not prepared to discuss his future. "I am not here to talk about speculation because people talk too much," said Benitez on Friday. "I am focused on preparing my team for the game against Bolton on Saturday.”
Let up on Arsene – Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Manchester United fans to stop their abuse of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. It has been common practice for Red Devils fans to verbally attack Wenger whenever the clubs meet. United and Arsenal clash at the Emirates on Sunday. "There's been some terrible abuse from our fans to Arsene Wenger and there must be a line drawn. We have a team to support - we don't need to worry about anyone else,” said Fergie on Friday. United and the Gunners last went toe-to-toe for the EPL seven years ago. But with Arsenal on a 10 game unbeaten streak they are right back in the mix for honours this season. "Looking at the way the league is shaping up, this game with Arsenal is the biggest game of the season,” added the fiery Scot.
Disappointment for Gunners fans
Arsene Wenger has told the club’s fans that he is unlikely to sign any players before the end of the January transfer window. He also admitted that he regretted missing out on defender Chris Smalling, with the Fulham 20-year-old choosing to join Manchester United at the end of the season. "Manchester United got Smalling in the end. I am sorry because we were very close to getting him and we were on the case very early," said the Gunners boss on Friday. "I wish the player well. At the end of the day it is important he has a good career. In both clubs he has a good chance to make a great career." And with Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott returning to full fitness in the next few weeks, Wenger does not expect to add to his squad. "It is not impossible (to sign a player before window shuts), but at the moment it is unlikely."
Reason behind Nani’s resurrection
Nani has revealed that a heart-to-heart talk with manager Sir Alex Ferguson is behind his improved form. The Portugal international has largely disappointed at Old Trafford since his £16m move from Porto two years ago, living largely in Cristaino Ronaldo’s shadow. Recently he has started to win over many fans. "Week by week the coach has shown more confidence in me and that has really helped,” revealed Nani on Friday. "United is not an easy place to recover your first team place because there is such a big squad and I had problems at the start of this season.” But following advice from Fergie he has started to shine. "He changed my mentality and improved my morale over the past few months, but as I've said before, I am Nani and not Cristiano Ronaldo. I don't want comparisons because our style of play is different."
Disappointment for Birmingham and other transfer gossip
Birmingham’s hopes of strengthening their squad before the close of the transfer window were dealt a blow on Friday when Liverpool and Tottenham revealed that they would not sell Ryan Babel and Roman Pavlyuchenko respectively to the ambitious club. Liverpool are determined to hang on to Babel because they still believe he has the potential to shine at Anfield, while Spurs want Birmingham to up their £9m for Pavlyuchenko. Elsewhere, Manchester City have made a £7m move for Parma midfielder McDonald Mariga; David Dunn has urged Blackburn to bring in James Beattie from Stoke as Benni McCarthy's replacemen; and Arsenal have made a fresh offer for Marouane Chamakh in a bid to snap up the Bordeaux striker on a pre-contract.

Swinging Rio banned
Rio Ferdinand has been banned for four matches after his appeal against a violent conduct charge was rejected as “frivolous”. This comes after the Manchester United defender was brought to book for swinging an arm at Hull striker Craig Fagan during the Red Devil's 4-0 win on Saturday. Ferdinand, who has made only 10 appearances for United this season due to injury, will now miss Sunday's EPL encounter with Arsenal, followed by clashes against Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Everton. He is however available for the first leg of the Champions League tie against AC Milan at the San Siro on 16 February and the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa on 28 February. In better news for the reigning champions, Serbia international Nemanja Vidic is set to make a comeback this weekend after almost month out with a nerve injury in his leg.
Vermaelen boost for Gunners
Arsenal fans can breathe a sigh of relief with the news that star defender Thomas Vermaelen has not broken his leg although he remains doubtful for Sunday's EPL match against Manchester United. The 24-year-old Belgium international, one of the Gunners undoubted players of the season so far, limped off after 35 minutes of the goalless draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday. Initial fears were of a leg fracture but X-ray scans showed there was no break. "There is still a good chance he will not play on Sunday," manager Arsene Wenger told the Arsenal website on Thursday. "There is no fracture in Thomas's leg but his injury still has to be assessed." Definitely out of the crunch clash against United is striker Eduardo. "Eduardo has a small, small, small hamstring problem. He will be out for one week. He will not make Man United but he might make Chelsea."
Cheerio Rob
It’s official, Robinho is off to Brazil to join Santos on six-month loan. The £32.5m British record signing has failed to live up to expectations at Manchester City since his switch from Real Madrid in September 2008. The move is driven by the 26-year-old’s desire to make Brazil’s World Cup squad. "Robinho is someone who needs to be playing regularly and we wish him well for the period of his loan,” said City manager Roberto Mancini on Thursday. Santos, who are the club Pele played for, will assume all the player's contract terms, including wages and bonuses. Robinho signed on the first day of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed's ownership of City last season and enjoyed a fine first season, ending the campaign as top scorer with 15 goals, including a hat-trick against Stoke.
Woeful campaign hurts Stevie G
Steven Gerrard feels hurt by Liverpool's dismal season. The Reds dull 0-0 draw with Wolves on Wednesday left the legendary club facing an uphill battle in their bid to finish in the top four and thus secure Champions League football next season. "There are a lot of people in the dressing room who are hurt at seeing us lying in seventh and eighth position, and you learn a lot from these situations when times are hard,” revealed Gerrard on Thursday. Despite the result it extended the Reds unbeaten run to five matches, something not lost on a downcast Gerrard. "We believe we've turned the corner. The most important thing for me has been the character and desire players have shown. As captain, that gives me major confidence. Nobody is hiding and that's a big positive.”
Dutch ace disappoints EPL clubs and other transfer gossip
In-demand striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will not be leaving AC Milan which will leave his many EPL suitors disappointed. The Dutch ace has been tracked by Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Everton in recent months. And despite not holding down a regular spot at the San Siro he is now determined to stay with Milan and force his way back into their starting XI. Elsewhere, Tottenham have rejected an £8m bid from Birmingham for striker Roman Pavlyuchenko because they remain intent on recouping as much of the £14m they paid for the Russia international as they can; Manchester City have bid for Middlesbrough's highly rated winger Adam Johnson; and Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is lining up goalkeeping cover for Heurelho Gomes, even though the Brazilian has been given the all-clear after a shoulder problem.

Wayne Rools – Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Wayne Rooney’s class after he fired Manchester United into the final of the Carling Cup on Wednesday. The England striker popped up deep into stoppage time to head home a Ryan Giggs cross to break Manchester City hearts in the second-leg of the semi-final. Facing a 2-1 deficit from last week’s first-leg at Eastlands, United opened the scoring through Paul Scholes in the 52nd minute before Michael Carrick blasted home to put the Red Devils into the aggregate lead. City however bounced back with an excellent goal by Carlos Tevez to level matters before Rooney's injury-time heroics. "His control, his leading of the line, his penetration was absolutely fantastic," said Ferguson afterwards. "It was a wonderful performance, truly world class." Fergie also praised Darren Fletcher’s performance. "Darren was incredible, he was all over the place," added the Scot.
Gunners sweating on star defender
Arsenal are sweating over the fitness of star defender Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian, one of the Gunners best players this season, limped off in their goalless draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday with what may be a broken leg. The £10m signing from Ajax Amsterdam has forged a steely partnership with William Gallas in the heart of the Arsenal defence which has been one of the main reasons behind the club’s splendid form. "The news is not good," said Gunners boss Arsene Wenger afterwards. "He will have an X-ray on Thursday morning. He is on crutches. It could be a fracture to the top of the fibula. We'll have to wait and see." The injury added to a frustrating night for Arsenal who were unable to break down Villa, putting a dent in their title aspirations as they failed to close the gap on leaders Chelsea.
‘Lamps is world’s best’
Frank Lampard is the world’s best midfielder, according to Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti. The 31-year-old England international banged in two goals in the Blues 3-0 win over Birmingham on Wednesday as they reclaimed top spot in the EPL from Manchester United. "His two goals showed he is the best running midfielder in the world," said Ancelotti afterwards. "He has this fantastic quality to time his runs into the box. Because we use all the pitch to attack he is able to arrive in the penalty area and score many times." Frenchman Florent Malouda netted Chelsea’s first goal on five minutes before Lampard struck twice to take his season's tally to 13. It ended Birmingham's 15-match unbeaten run. "It is good to be back on top of the table," added Ancelotti. "We still have a game in hand, that is important as Arsenal and United play each other on Sunday."
Yossi’s going nowhere
Liverpool have laughed off claims that star midfielder Yossi Benayoun will follow striker Andriy Voronin to Russian side Dinamo Moscow. This comes after a Dinamo executive said a deal had been agreed for the 29-year-old Israeli international to join his club. Liverpool however are adamant one of the few players to shine for the club this season is not leaving Anfield. "The player is not for sale, it's as simple as that," said a club spokesman. Benayoun, who joined the Reds from West Ham almost three years ago, is currently out of action because of a rib injury. His contract with Liverpool only expires in 2013.
Spurs ready to sell Russian misfit and other transfer gossip
Tottenham could finally be free of misfit striker Roman Pavlyuchenko after opening talks with Birmingham over the sale of the Russian. The Russian international cost the North London club a massive £13.8m from Spartak Moscow but has failed to settle. Spurs are said to be willing to accept £8m for him while Birmingham have so far only offered £6m. Elsewhere, AC Milan striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who has been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham, says he does not mind where he goes - as long as he is guaranteed more playing time; Santos midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso has said he is not keen on joining Manchester City as part of the deal that could take Robinho back to the Brazilian club; and Eidur Gudjohnsen will finalise a move to Tottenham today after turning down West Ham.

Players will behave – Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson has scoffed at suggestions that his players will need to be told to behave ahead of Wednesday’s Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Old Trafford. The powderkeg second-leg encounter is finely poised with City holding a 2-1 edge. And following the spat between Gary Neville and Carlos Tevez, which has its roots in the first-leg semi-final, there have been fears that the return could explode. "The player behaviour has always been perfect. We have great players who play to the right rules of the game,” said Fergie on Tuesday. "We have never had any issues in big games. Look at the record. I am not worried about it." Fergie added that United had enough experience of playing in tense games to know it is important to keep your head. "We have had feisty games against the likes of Leeds and Liverpool since I have been here.”
United star facing suspension
Rio Ferdinand is set to miss Wednesday's crunch Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City after being charged with violent conduct by the FA. The Manchester United defender, who has only just returned from a three-month injury layoff, faces a three-game ban for a forearm smash on Hull's Craig Fagan. If Ferdinand appeals he can play in the Manchester derby. However, he risks having his ban increased if a panel decides the appeal has no grounds. The referee missed the incident at Old Trafford but the FA have taken action after seeing footage of Ferdinand swinging round and catching Fagan in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Tigers.
Fergie laughs off City’s ‘delusions of grandeur’
Manchester City are "getting carried away" with all their talk about becoming the biggest club in the world, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. Speaking ahead of the Carling Cup semi-final second-leg between Manchester United and City, Fergie taunted their cross-town enemies over their plans for world domination. "Sometimes people can get carried away. Only the future can decide that," insisted Fergie. The fiery Scot also laughed off suggestions that the match meant more to City because they have not won a trophy for 34 years. "This is a semi-final, a local derby and that's important enough in itself," added Fergie. "Those two factors alone are incentive enough for both teams.”
Rafa staying put - agent
Rafa Benitez is going nowhere, insists the Liverpool manager’s agent. The Spaniard has been linked to Juventus in the past few days after the Italian club’s current manager Ciro Ferrara was placed under increasing pressure due to Juve’s poor form. "I have had no contact with Juventus or with any other Italian club regarding an interest on Rafa," said Benitez's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon on Tuesday. Benitez signed a new deal in March 2009 that could keep him at the Merseyside club until 2014. "There have been rumours linking Rafa to Juve, just as there have been reports linking Guus Hiddink to Juve,” said Quilon. "They are all media speculation and there is no truth in it. Rafa has a four-year contract with Liverpool. He feels he has the strength to continue with the team and he is fully focused on guiding Liverpool up the standings."
Spurs to pip Hammers to striker and other transfer gossip
Tottenham are set to hijack West Ham’s attempt to sign Iceland striker Eidur Gudjonsen. According to reports, Spurs will move for the former Chelsea and Barcelona star after missing out on Ruud Van Nistelrooy who joined Hamburg on Monday. West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola had been hoping Gudjonsen’s goals would fire them to safety. Elsewhere, Arsenal teenager Jack Wilshere's proposed loan move to Bolton is back on despite the heated match between the two club’s last week; Sunderland are set to renew their interest in Liverpool's out-of-favour Dutch forward Ryan Babel by offering £8m for the Dutch international; and Manchester United have joined the race for Fulham's £7m-rated defender Chris Smalling, who is also attracting the interest of Arsenal.

Rooney relief for United fans
Manchester United fans will breathe a sigh of relief after Wayne Rooney pledged his long-term future to the club. The 24-year-old has been red-hot this season, banging in 19 goals despite United being a pale-shadow of themselves. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been sniffing around after news emerged recently of United’s bad financial position. “There's always speculation and when other big teams are talking about you it's nice,” said Rooney on Monday. "But as I've said many times before, I am a United player and I am very happy at Old Trafford." He added that he wanted to stay and help the club create history. "We've won the League for the last three years and nobody has ever won four in a row. We want to create history.”
Italian giants want Rafa
Juventus are ready to take advantage over the uncertainty surrounding Rafael Benitez's future at Liverpool. The Italian giants are, like Liverpool, experiencing a nightmare season and are on the verge of sacking incumbent manager Ciro Ferrara. According to reports, they believe Benitez is the man to turn things around for them. And Benitez’s agent Manuel Garcia Quilon only fuelled the speculation on Monday, claiming: "Benitez to Juventus? In football you never know. I don't know what will happen in four to five months. In football everything changes quickly." Quilon insisted that Benitez had a four-year contact at Anfield and wanted to honour it but that he was leaving his options open. "He is a very important figure to the Liverpool fans - the idols of the fans are Gerrard, Torres, and Benitez. But you never know what will happen."
Stevie G back to inspire Reds
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez expects club’s talisman Steve Gerrard to hit top form in the second-half of the season. Gerrard’s fortunes have mirrored those of the Reds this season as he has struggled with injury and generally been below his usually inspiring self. But with a comeback from injury against Wolves set for Tuesday, Benitez is hopeful his club captain can inspire his misfiring team-mates. "I don't have any doubt about Gerrard's commitment - nobody has. He can play better or worse, but he will always try,” said Benitez on Monday. "He knows he has to improve and wants to do it. If you are injured and have to start again, and injured and have to start again, then it's difficult for any player, be it Gerrard, Torres, Benayoun or whoever.” Buoyed by recent wins over Aston Villa and Tottenham, Liverpool can move into fourth place with victory at Molineux.
Spurs looking to bounce back
Tottenham are desperate to get their season back on track against Fulham on Tuesday after a recent mini slump. The North Londoners were held by Leeds in the FA Cup on Saturday, on top of having their Champions League aspirations dented after a draw against Hull and defeat at Liverpool. Said lanky Spurs striker Peter Crouch on Monday: “We’re still in the FA Cup and we still have aspirations to finish fourth. We’ve got a game straight away against Fulham. It’s always nice to put one to bed and go and get three points. The Leeds game has been and gone. It's a disappointment we didn’t manage to see the game out, but it’s not the end of the world.” Tottenham still lie fourth on the standings but have Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa breathing down their necks.
No fairytale return for EPL legend and other transfer gossip
Speculation surrounding an imminent return to the EPL for Ruud Van Nistelrooy has come to an end after the former Manchester United goal ace snubbed suitors Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham by joining German giants Hamburg on Monday. All three EPL clubs, as well as Everton have now turned their attentions to Van Nistelrooy’s fellow Dutch international Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Elsewhere, Birmingham want to sign Tottenham flop Roman Pavlyuchenko; Liverpool have offered Standard Liege striker Milan Jovanovic, a three-year deal; West Ham are set to end James Beattie's Stoke nightmare by throwing £3m at the former England striker; Preston boss Darren Ferguson hopes to complete the loan signing of striker Danny Welbeck from his father's club Manchester United; and Zimbabwe striker Benjani is set to complete a £3m move from Manchester City to West Ham on Monday.

Blame me – Wenger
Arsene Wenger has taken personal blame for Arsenal crashing out of the FA Cup but has defended selecting a weakened team. The Gunners lost 3-1 to Stoke on Sunday to crash out of the world’s oldest cup competition in the fourth round. Arsenal’s next four EPL games are against major rivals Aston Villa, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. "I do not regret the side I put out, I did not have much choice. We had 10 injuries and a very difficult programme coming up,” conceded Wenger afterwards. "Our selection was simple, take a look at our schedule and you must see we cannot play the same 11 every time. But if you do not win in such situations, it is my fault. I can only stand by the team I selected in the circumstances.” The Gunners currently lie two points behind leaders Manchester United but have a game in hand.
Tevez lost in translation
Carlos Tevez's agent has defended the tiny striker’s remarks about his former team-mate Gary Neville, claiming they were taken out of context. Neville and Tevez have been involved in a war-of-words recently after the former said Manchester United were correct not to pay £25m for Tevez because he was not worth it. Tevez is said to have responded by branding Neville a "moron" and a "boot-licker" in an Argentine radio interview. "Sometimes comments get a bit lost in translation," agent Kia Joorabchian told the BBC. "If you use slang terminology, that slang, interpreted word for word, may not sound as it would in context." Tevez joined United’s arch-enemies Manchester City at the beginning of the season, and scored both goals in their recent 2-1 win over United in the first leg of the carling Cup semi-finals. The Football Association have warned both players over their future conduct.
Neville adds fuel to the fire
Gary Neville has added more fuel to the fire of simmering tensions between Manchester United and Manchester City, claiming the Blues do not deserve their lead in the Carling Cup semi-finals. City beat United 2-1 in the first-leg semi last week and travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night for the return. "We certainly deserved at least a draw for our performance at City," said Neville on Sunday. "For the first 40 minutes and the last half hour we were the stronger team." Extra police will be on duty on Wednesday around Old Trafford in what is described as being one of 'the highest risk' games in England this season. "The atmosphere was very good last Tuesday,” added Neville. "All Manchester derbies have a great atmosphere and Wednesday will be no different at our ground. It'll be a great environment to play football in."
Robinho is homeward bound
Brazilian striker Robinho is set to quit Manchester City in order to save his World Cup dream. The one-time £32.5m record signing will pack his bags and head home to Santos (Pele’s former club) after a nightmare time at Eastlands. "The most important thing is my happiness. Money is not always everything,” said Robinho on Sunday. "First thing is that I am going through a bad period. So I asked the manager Roberto Mancini if I was going to be playing in the City side this season or not. He said he could not be sure and I told him I could not accept that. This is the year of the World Cup finals.” City boss Roberto Mancini however claims he wants the 25-year-old to stay. “I want him to stay. If a player plays well he can play in all of the games. It's a rule,” commented Mancini.
United offer Rooney massive money and other transfer gossip
Manchester United will offer Wayne Rooney a massive pay rise to beat off the advances of Real Madrid and Barcelona. The La Liga giants have been keeping a close eye on the England star after news emerged of financial trouble at Old Trafford. But in a statement of intent, the Red Devils management said on Sunday that they would offer Rooney £150,000 a week to keep him at the club. Elsewhere, Ruud van Nistelrooy will join Hamburg to win back his place in the Holland team before the World Cup, leaving EPL suitors Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham frustrated; Everton have jumped to the front of the queue to sign AC Milan striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, with the Dutchman also interesting Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool; and Tottenham are ready to make a last-minute swoop for Palermo's giant 20-year-old Danish defender Simon Kjaer.

Rooney in four-goal heaven
Wayne Rooney was in goal heaven on Saturday after netting four times against Hull. The England striker opened the scoring for Manchester United in the seventh minute at Old Trafford before grabbing three goals in the last ten minutes to make him the first United player to score four in a match since Ruud van Nistelrooy did it in a Champions League encounter with Sparta Prague in November 2004. "It is the first time I have scored four times in a professional football match and it is a great feeling," said Rooney afterwards. "I am really proud of the achievement. It is something special." Rooney has now scored 18 goals this season, just five short of season best tally of 23."I'm confident of beating my best season at United," he added. "I will be disappointed if I don't because I've still got hopefully another 20 games to play.”
Tevez should be banned – Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson has called for Carlos Tevez to be banned for what he insists was an “x-rated” foul on Wes Brown during last week’s Carling Cup first leg against Manchester City. United lost 2-1 to their bitter-rivals with Tevez netting both City goals. "Tevez should have been sent off, really. Have you seen that tackle? He went right over the ball. But he didn't even get booked,” fumed Fergie on Saturday. "Other than that, nothing happened in the game. It was competitive but there were no confrontations on the pitch, nothing." The second-leg will be played on 27 February at Old Trafford. Fergie however tried to play down the importance of the game, insisting: "At the outset the object was to qualify for the final and we can still do that. I always said the game was going to be decided at Old Trafford and that's the case."
Wenger to break golden rule
Arsene Wenger will break one of his golden rules to keep William Gallas at Arsenal. Up until now, Wenger has refused to give any player older than 32 more than a one-year contract extension. This has prompted the departures of players such as Robert Pires. But such has been Gallas’ displays for the Gunners that Wenger will to go against his unwritten rule and offer the central defender a new two-year contract extension despite him turning 33 this year. “I feel positive about him staying. He is a winner and I believe he enjoys being with this team,” said Wenger on Friday. “I expected him to leave when I took the captaincy off him but he found a new balance. He has played very, very well and I don’t want to lose him.”
Anelka’s Blues future in doubt
Nicolas Anelka’s future at Chelsea has been thrown into doubt after he failed to agree a new deal with the club this week. According to reports, the French striker wants a £40,000-a-week increase on his £80,000-a-week wages but Chelsea are not willing to budge on their offer of a £20,000 increase as they attempt to trim their enormous wage bill. Anelka's current deal runs out in 18 months. This has forced the France star's agent to consider his options and contemplate a move away from Stamford Bridge. Anelka joined Chelsea for £15m from Manchester City two years ago and has since formed one of the most feared strike partnerships in the EPL alongside Didier Drogba.
United to sell star defender and other transfer gossip
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is set to flog defender Nemanja Vidic to Barcelona for £25m this summer - with Juventus's £12m-rated Giorgio Chiellini coming in as his replacement. He does however face a fight with bitter-rivals Manchester City for the services of the 25-year-old Italian international. Elsewhere, Arsenal are set to bid for the £8m-rated Fulham defender Chris Smalling; Tottenham have offered Robbie Keane to West Ham in a bid to lure forward Carlton Cole to White Hart Lane; Monaco forward Eidur Gudjohnsen is set to snub a move to Liverpool in favour of joining West Ham; and Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Atletico Madrid's Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea.

‘Super Agent’ appointed to lure United ace
Real Madrid have hired a ‘super’ agent’ to help them sign Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney. According to reports, Pini Zahavi, one of football’s best known middle-men, has been appointed by the Spanish giants to try and negotiate a deal with United. Rooney’s future at Old Trafford has come under scrutiny in recent weeks following revelations about the EPL champion’s debt. Zahavi, is best known for bringing Roman Abramovich to Chelsea. He is also Rio Ferdinand’s agent and is the general ‘go-to guy’ for all big-money transfers in world football. Watch this space!
Red Devils defence set for big boost
Manchester United fans could see star defender Rio Ferdinand back in the famous red jersey this weekend. The England defender has been sidelined since October with back and calf problems. According to United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the 31-year-old defender could make an appearance against Hull on Saturday. "Rio has been training very well in the last few weeks. He will play on Saturday,” revealed Fergie on Friday. The elegant player has only played eight games all season as he has battled persistent niggles. But after receiving intensive treatment from a top London specialist over the past three months it appears he is now ready to help United push for a fourth successive EPL title and a place in England’s World Cup squad. "It is a big boost because the defence has been the weakest part of our game this season,” added Fergie.
Is it adios Robinho?
Manchester City star Robinho appears headed for the exit door. Reports from England suggest the Brazilian could play his last game for the Citizens this weekend when they tackle Scunthorpe in the FA Cup fourth round. Apparently City manager Roberto Mancini finally lost patience with the £32.5m signing after his terrible performance against Everton last week when he came on as a sub and was then subbed himself. City broke the British transfer record to land Robinho from Real Madrid in August 2008. He scored 15 goals for them last season but has hardly featured this season as he has battled injury. The 26-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona.
Arsenal urged to show mettle
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has issued Arsenal a challenge – show us your mettle over the next few weeks for us to take you seriously as title challengers. The Gunners have closed an eleven point gap on Chelsea in the past two months to surge to the top of the EPL on goal difference. But with successive games against Aston Villa, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool over the next fortnight, their title credentials will be put to the sternest test. "It will be a very important period for them. The most important thing will be when we play them on February 7,” said Ancelotti on Friday. Chelsea play Preston in the FA Cup fourth round this weekend. In other news, star Blues midfielder Michael Essien's knee injury is not as bad as first feared and he should be fit by the end of February.
United want exciting Frenchman and other transfer gossip
Manchester United are hot on the heels of exciting Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko. The 20-year-old French international is valued at £18m and was set to join Tottenham last season before pulling out of the deal at the last minute. Sissoko is apparently seen as a replacement for Owen Hargreaves, whose long-term future in the game remains in doubt. United are set to sell winger Zoran Tosic to Cologne to fund the bid for Sissoko. Elsewhere, Chelsea insist that midfielder Joe Cole, who is out of contract at the end of the season, will remain at the club next term; West Ham are set to sign South Africa striker Benni McCarthy from Blackburn Rovers on loan; Fulham have made a bid for FC Basle's £6m-rated Switzerland striker Marco Streller; and Sunderland want Aston Villa's Habib Beye after a deal to sign Hamburg defender Guy Demel broke down.

Neville labelled a ‘boot-licker’!
First Gary Neville was “disrespectful”, now the Manchester United captain is a "boot-licker" and a "moron"! These are the words of Carlos Tevez as he continues to lay into his former team-mate. Earlier this week Neville claimed Tevez was not worth £25m and that United were right not to sign him. Tevez, now of Manchester City, banged in both goals in the Blues 2-1 Carling Cup win over United on Tuesday, cupping his ears towards the Red Drevils bench in celebration. "My celebration was directed at Gary Neville," Tevez told ESPN Argentina. "He acted like a complete boot-licker when he said I wasn't worth £25m, just to suck up to the manage.” Television cameras appeared to catch Neville making an obscene gesture when Tevez scored. "I don't know what the hell that moron [tarado] is talking about me for," said Tevez. "I never said anything about him.”
Expensive AA expects better
Expensive Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani has assured the club’s fans that his performances will get "a lot, lot better!" The Italian signed from Roma for £20million with a big reputation – and a serious ankle injury which sidelined him for the first three months of his Anfield career. His return to action coincided with the Reds desperate slump in form. "Ideally, I would have been able to start playing in a team that was winning matches. But instead, by the time I was fit, the team was going through a difficult period," said Aquilani on Thursday. "That made the transition to English football a lot harder so the pressure has been on me to produce performances straight away - when I have played though, I know I can do a lot, lot better,” he added.
Gunners - contenders or pretenders?
Arsenal will know in the next two weeks whether they have got a realistic stab at winning the EPL title, according to star midfielder Tomas Rosicky. The Gunners have surprised all by overturning an 11-point deficit in seven weeks to storm past Chelsea and Manchester United. Arsenal next four matches are against Aston Villa next Wednesday, followed by United at home, Chelsea away and then a visit from Liverpool. "Everybody knows the coming weeks are the critical ones in the whole season,” said Rosicky on Thursday. "If we can win the majority of our next four EPL games, it will have a huge bearing on where the title goes. No one expected to close the gap at the top quite so quickly. But things can change in just a few weeks. Can we win the title this year? We are definitely up for it and want to do it."
Shearer names EPL’s best player
EPL legend Alan Shearer believes Wayne Rooney is the EPL’s best player. Speaking on BBC television, Shearer said Rooney has carried Manchester United since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. "He is crucial to United, without him, they would really struggle. Their whole play revolves around Rooney,” commented Shearer. "He is the best striker in the EPL, for certain. He's a world-class player. You can see the passion he has, and determination, and he has developed into a complete forward, who can lead the line on his own." Shearer, recently voted the best EPL striker of the last decade, claims the Red Devils would really struggle without Rooney. "You look now, and it's set up completely around him. Whether they play two up, three up or one up, it all revolves around him, and at times it seems he is the only threat. They will be praying he doesn't get injured."
Spurs favoured to land EPL legend and other transfer gossip
Tottenham are now favourites to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy from Real Madrid after news that the former Manchester United star has turned down a big-money offer from West Ham. The 33-year-old is desperate to secure first team football after being benched at Real following his return from another serious knee injury. Before that, Van Nistelrooy banged in 45 goals for Real as they won consecutive La Liga titles. Elsewhere, Portsmouth defender Younes Kaboul is in high demand with Tottenham, Sunderland and Manchester City all chasing the Moroccan’s £10m signature; Manchester United and Manchester City are set to battle it out for Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini; West Ham and Birmingham are both keen on signing AC Milan striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on loan; and Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh has assured Arsenal and Liverpool that he will make a decision about his future by the end of the month.

Reds roar back into the mix
Liverpool roared back into the race for a Champions League spot after downing Tottenham 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday, with their beleaguered boss Rafa Benitez firing a warning at the club’s detractors. Two goals from Dutch star Dirk Kuyt saw the Reds move to within a point of fourth place. "The race for fourth is between four teams now,” boasted Benitez afterwards. “We knew we had to reduce the gap to stay in the race and it was important to win here.” Their main rivals for the coveted Champions League place are Aston Villa, Manchester City and Spurs. “I'm really pleased with the players. Now I think we will get stronger over the second half of the season,” added Benitez. Liverpool have enjoyed a dismal season up to now losing seven games. They only lost two league games the whole of last season.
Tevez blasts disrespectful Neville
Carlos Tevez has taken exception to comments by Gary Neville, accusing his former Manchester United team-mate of showing him “disrespect”. The Argentinean comments come after Neville told the press that United were right not to pay £25m for Tevez. "It is wrong for one professional to criticise another in the way he did when he did not know the full facts,” Tevez told The Sun newspaper. Tevez scored both goals in Manchester City’s 2-1 win over United in the Carling Cup on Tuesday. Neville, responded to Tevez’s goal celebration with an obscene one-fingered gesture, "I was not trying to be offensive to him when I celebrated, I was just trying to make a point to him. I felt in my two years at Old Trafford I earned the respect of the management and players for what I achieved. I won five trophies and was the club's second top scorer.”
Ade’s ready to lace up his boots
Manchester City star Emmanuel Adebayor is finally ready to lace up his boots and return to action. The £25m goal ace has been on compassionate leave since being caught up in the horror gun attack on the Togo team bus during the African Nations Cup in Angola. Two people were killed in the terrorist attack, while seven others, including two Togo players were badly injured. Adebayor, who was left deeply traumatised by the tragedy, is expected back in City colours in next Wednesday’s Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford. City hold a 2-1 advantage.
Stevie G’s going nowhere
Steven Gerrard insists he is happy at Liverpool and will not walk out on the club at the end of the season. Recent reports have claimed the Reds idol is fed-up with the club’s failure to challenge for silverware which has alerted Inter Milan, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City. "I've heard about a dozen versions of the same rumour and they're all as daft as each other,” Gerrard said on Wednesday. "I'd love to know who comes up with this kind of stuff because they must have an unbelievable imagination.” Gerrard also dismissed claims that he and manager Rafa Benitez do not see eye-to-eye. "In the time since he's been here I've never had a problem with the manager or his staff. The fans can be assured that I am doing all I can to get back to top form and help Liverpool finish the season on a high."
City in for snorter and other transfer gossip
Manchester City are interested in signing Fiorentina's former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu, according to the 31-year-old player's agent. Mutu was one of the first high-profile signings when Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea but was later bust for snorting cocaine and booted out of Stamford Bridge. How he would fit in among expensive City strikers Tevez, Adebayor, Santa Cruz, Robinho and Bellamy is anyone’s guess! Elsewhere, Tottenham full-back Alan Hutton could also be on his way to West Ham, with Bordeaux's Mathieu Chalme his replacement in the Spurs defence; Tottenham will move for Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy - but only if he can offload misfit Roman Pavlyuchenko; and Manchester United and Chelsea are battling it out to sign 18-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder Sergio Canales, who can leave Racing Santander in the summer when his contract runs out.

Tevez back to haunt Red Devils
Carlos Tevez banged in two goals on Tuesday night as Manchester City held the edge over bitter rivals Manchester United after the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. The tiny Argentine, who moved between the two clubs in the summer, fired home a late first half penalty and then headed home the winner in the 65th minute at Eastlands. Ryan Giggs had earlier given United a 17th minute lead. "It was special for me - but it was for the fans of City," said 25-year-old Tevez afterwards. "I feel tired, but it's OK." Tevez moved to the blue half of Manchester after United refused to pay £25m for him after his two-year loan expired at Old Trafford at the end of last season. His tireless performance last night, which takes his goals for the season to 17, has given United manager Sir Alex Ferguson something to think about!
We have slight edge – Mancini
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Manchester United in the first-leg of the Carling Cup semi-finals gives them the slight edge. The second leg will be played at Old Trafford on 27 January. "It is not a big advantage, but it is an advantage.,” said the Italian afterwards. "I am happy with the result because we were behind after 20 minutes and I felt it could be difficult. But we recovered, scored two goals and played well. Carlos Tevez scored both City goals after Ryan Giggs had opened the scoring for United. "They had three or four chances but, in Shay Given, we have one of the best goalkeepers,” added Mancini. "Now I would say we have a 51% chance.”
Football ‘bites’ Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson was unmoved after Carlos Tevez scored two goals for Manchester City in their 2-1 win over Manchester United in the Carling Cup semi-finals on Tuesday. The second leg will be played on 27 January. Tevez repeated the cupped-ears gesture he first performed in front of his then home dug-out when trying to secure a new contract during last season's Manchester derby. "It is just the way these things happen. Football can be like that. It can bite you," said Fergie afterwards. "We have had a few players leave the club and score against us. There is no issue. I am happy with the players we have got." The fiery Scot however, insists United’s home supporters will give them the edge next Wednesday. “We played well and dominated the match. We were reasonably in control but we had a mad five minutes before half-time," he added.
Do or die now, admits Rafa
It’s make or break for Liverpool on Wednesday when they take on Tottenham. Spurs are riding high in this season’s EPL and currently lie in fourth place, four points ahead of the Reds. Both teams are desperate to secure Champions League football next season. "We all know how important it is for us to win," admitted Benitez on Tuesday. "There's a big difference between being one point behind and seven. If Tottenham win, it will give them a buzz and a lift. They'll have confidence. But if we beat them we'll be in a good position.” A win for Spurs will also strengthen the positions of Aston Villa and Manchester City, the two other teams who are also in the race for a Champions League place. "So we will win and not consider the other options. We're confident,” added Benitez.
Former Gunner in EPL return and other transfer gossip
Former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini could make a shock return to the EPL with Manchester City. The 25-year-old Frenchman, who can play left-back or in central midfield, is warming the bench at AC Milan which has alerted City boss Roberto Mancini. Flamini left Arsenal on a free transfer two years ago. The 25-year-old is desperate to play first-team football in a bid to keep his hopes of a World Cup place for France alive so a move to City would be very appealing to him. Elsewhere, Turkish giants are Galatasaray are monitoring Ryan Babel's situation at Liverpool and Benni McCarthy’s at Blackburn; Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are all tracking AC Milan’s Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar; and Portsmouth defender Younes Kaboul could be in line for a return to Tottenham as Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate's injury troubles continue.

City will become top Manchester dogs - Mancini
Manchester City will one day knock arch-enemies Manchester United off their pedestal as England’s biggest club. This is according to Roberto Mancini, the manager who will lead City into his first local derby on Tuesday when the two clubs clash in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup. "If we work well, it is possible," said the Italian on Monday. "United have a big history. They have been a good team for many years but City can become a big team in the next year. It is most important that we get into the top four. That would change the situation." Although City have not won a trophy in 34 years, the billions invested in the club by their new Arab owners - with the promise of much more to come - suggest it is only a matter of before the Red Devils are usurped as top dogs of Manchester.
Fergie made right Tevez call – Neville
Gary Neville has ratcheted up the ante ahead of Manchester United’s clash with bitter cross-town rivals Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup on Tuesday, claiming Carlos Tevez was never worth £25m! That was the amount Tevez was offered to United for after his two-year loan deal came to an end at Old Trafford at the end of last season. "The manager over the years has made many decisions with regard to players coming and going - and he has almost always been proved correct,” said Neville on Monday. "I can't disagree with his decision on Tevez. He was a good player for us but, if the financial demands are too big, then that's the way it goes. Other good players have left this club in the past, it's not the first time it's happened.” Tevez has been red-hot for City this season, netting 15 goals.
Becks won’t celebrate goal against United
David Beckham will not celebrate if he scores against Manchester United in the Champions League. The Red Devils legend will return to Old Trafford for the first time as a player since he left United in 2003 when AC Milan play United in the last 16 of the Champions League in March. "It's going to be a weird feeling playing against United at Old Trafford but I am ready for it now," Beckham told The Mirror newspaper on Monday. "I wouldn't celebrate if I scored. It would take me a split second to compose myself and remind myself I couldn't celebrate because when you score a goal, it's a rush and it's an instinct to celebrate. But if it happened at Old Trafford, I would curb that instinct.” Beckham won six EPL titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League trophy with United in a glorious ten-years with the Reds.
Blues sweating on African star
Chelsea are anxiously waiting to assess the injury to Michael Essien after the Ghanian star pulled out of the African Cup of Nations on Monday. Fears are that the muscular midfielder’s season may be over after he damaged knee ligaments in training in Angola. He missed six months of last season with knee knack. According to reports, Essien is on his way back to London where he will be checked by Chelsea medical staff. If their worst fears are realised, it could force the club into the transfer market with AC Milan pit-bull Gennaro Gattuso likely to be Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti’s first choice. The situation may also wreck Essien’s World Cup dream.
Stevie G headed for the door and other transfer gossip
Steven Gerrard is ready to walk out on Liverpool after growing disillusioned with life at Anfield. According to reports, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Manchester City are all waiting in the wings to snap up the Liverpool skipper if he chooses to leave the club he joined as a nine-year-old boy. Gerrard is desperate to win trophies and after another frustrating year for the Reds he is ready to try new pastures. He is valued at £40m. Elsewhere, Arsenal are ready to splash £7m on Fulham's England under-21 giant centre-half Chris Smalling; Tottenham have had a bid for out-of-favour goalkeeper Ben Foster rejected by Manchester United; and Barcelona have shrugged off claims that coach Pep Guardiola will replace Sir Alex Ferguson as the next manager of Manchester United.

Reds and Black Cats in striker swap?
It looks as though Ryan Babel’s troubled time at Liverpool may finally come to an end with weekend reports linking him with a move to Sunderland. The £11.5m misfit is apparently set to move to the Stadium of Light in a deal that will see tall Trinidad and Tobago striker Kenwyne Jones move the other way. Reds coach Rafa Benitez hopes Jones will provide cover for injury prone striker Fernando Torres, who is set for another six weeks on the sidelines after injuring knee cartilage last week. The 23-year-old Babel moved to Liverpool from Ajax Amsterdam just over two years ago amid high expectation but has only managed to start 24 league games in that time. Benitez, however, faces a fight with Aston Villa for Jones, a player Sunderland boss Steve Bruce claims is worth £40m on his day!
Wenger salutes Fab Cesc
Arsene Wenger has showered praise on his captain Cesc Fabregas after the Spanish midfield general returned from injury on Sunday to inspire Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Bolton. The 23-year-old opened the scoring in the 28th minute - his 10th in this season’s EPL – and then started the move which led to Fran Merida finishing off Bolton 12 minutes from time. "If you watched the game it is difficult to say how much we have missed him but you don't need to explain to anyone that it is important," said Wenger afterwards. "What is very interesting for us is Cesc gets stronger and stronger and has more personality on the pitch, like the whole team." The result sees the Gunners move to within three points of leaders Chelsea, with a game in hand.
Early knee op for United star
Manchester United fear their record signing Dimitar Berbatov may need knee surgery before the end of the season. The £32m Bulgarian has struggled in recent weeks, and despite scoring in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Burnley he was substituted in the second-half after feeling pain in his knee. "Dimitar was feeling his knee again," admitted Fergie after the game. "He played through it today but he could have come off at half-time. We will have to look at it again on Monday and see what the situation is." Wayne Rooney and Mame Biram Diouf also got on the scoresheet at Old Trafford, a result that leaves the Red Devils one point behind leaders Chelsea. The Blues however, have played a game less than the fierce rivals.
Blues leave Carlo in seven heaven
Chelsea’s “best performance” since he took over, is how Carlo Ancelotti described Saturday’s 7-2 thrashing of Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. The result was all the more impressive in that it was archieved without star players Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel, who are away on African Cup of Nations duty. "I think that was maybe the best performance this season,” said Ancelotti after double strikes from Frank Lampard and Nicolas Anelka and goals from Michael Ballack, Florent Malouda and Ashley Cole. "We played very well. I'm very happy because it's an important time for us. Without the African players we maybe could have some problems.” Ancelotti singled out Cole's goal for special praise. "Maybe the best goal was Ashley's. It was fantastic movement, fantastic dribbling and a fantastic goal."
Spurs to launch fresh ‘keeper bid and other transfer gossip
Tottenham will make a final bid to sign England goalkeeper David James this week. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has long been an admirer of a player he signed while in charge of Portsmouth and believes he will provide the right insurance in goal as Spurs attempt to break into the top four this season. The club’s incumbent goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has been very inconsistent for the past two seasons. Elsewhere, Robinho looks to be heading out of Manchester City after suffering the embarrassment of being substituted on Saturday just 51 minutes after coming off the bench; cash-strapped West Ham have slapped a whopping £15m transfer tag on England midfielder Scott Parker; and Ruud van Nistelrooy will snub a move back to the EPL and instead join Galatasaray in a £4m deal.

Fergie adamant about Tevez decision
Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant that allowing Carlos Tevez to leave the club was the correct decision. The little Argentine spent two years at Old Trafford before moving to their cross-town enemies Manchester City at the end of last season. But despite his extremely impressive form for the Blue half of Manchester, Fergie insists he was correct not to offer Tevez a permanent contract. "It's no issue for me. We made a pitch, he didn't take it, he went to Man City,” said the Scot on Saturday. “It's no problem for us, we move on. It's not the end of the world for us. He's done well, so be it. I've got no issues at all about it. I've got no regrets about it." Many United fans may not agree after Tevez’s 15 goals this season for City!
Mancini backs struggling Robinho
Struggling striker Robinho has a future at Manchester City, insists the club’s manager Roberto Mancini. The Brazilian superstar was humiliatingly substituted after an hour during City’s 2-0 loss to Everton on Saturday. "Is it the end of the line for Robinho? No. He is a good player," said Mancini after the loss at Goodison Park. "Like everyone in the squad, he needs to work hard and play well." The 25-year-old, who cost City a British record fee of £32.5m, has not scored for the club since May 2009. "I had Bellamy, Benjani, Tevez, and Robinho - all strikers - so I decided to take one off,” added Mancini. Robinho has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona.
Young African excites Fergie
New Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf is really exciting the club’s coaching staff. The Senegal international opened his account for the Red Devils on Saturday in their 3-0 win over Burnley after coming on as a late substitute. "Diouf has a lot of attributes, he is very good in the air," said Ferguson afterwards. "We are excited about him.” Diouf and Michael Owen replaced Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, who had each scored as United went 2-0 up mid-way through the second half at Old Trafford. "We have a big programme coming up and we wanted to watch Diouf and Michael Owen together,” said Fergie. "Berbatov was feeling his knee again. We will look at him on Monday to decide whether he needs an operation."
Rafa strikes back
Embattled Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has cast blame for the club’s woes on everyone but himself. The Reds again disappointed on Saturday,r blowing a lead against Stoke by conceding a last-minute equaliser. With many now calling for Benitez to be axed, and with the rumour mill suggesting troubles in the dressing room, the Spaniard has struck back. “Talk of problems in the dressing room are not true,” said Benitez on Saturday. "You could see the response from the players. Is someone saying there is a problem with Steven Gerrard? Not true. He was here today supporting the team, which says everything." Liverpool were without the injured Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and Daniel Agger. Benitez continued: "Everybody could see we were denied two penalties. We had so many players out injured, so the most important thing was for the players to react in the right way.”
City to beat United to Cole and other transfer gossip
Manchester City are being tipped to beat neighbours United and Tottenham to the signature of Chelsea's Joe Cole. The England international can leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer in the summer. The 28-year-old is demanding £130,000 to stay with Chelsea who are only prepared to go as high as £100,000. Sir Alex Ferguson is long-time admirer of Cole who he considers the most naturally gifted English player of his generation. Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard is pondering a move to one of Real Madrid, Inter Milan or Manchester City after growing disillusioned with life at Liverpool; Tottenham have moved closer to sealing the biggest deal of the January transfer window by holding direct talks with Palermo about £11m defender Simon Kjaer; and Argentina winger Angel di Maria has said 'no' to a move to Manchester City after a £38m bid was made for the 21-year-old at Benfica.

Managers show Rafa some love
Under-fire Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has received support from fellow EPL managers Harry Redknapp and Carlo Ancelotti as he fights for his position at Anfield. Liverpool have experienced a torrid season, and look set for their fourth successive year without a trophy. Many fans and former club legends have been calling for his head in recent weeks. Said Tottenham boss Redknapp: "The man's record is fantastic and he doesn't need advice off me. Last year, Liverpool were fantastic and they're capable of being fantastic again and Benitez knows that - he's a top, top manager.” Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said he had no doubt Benitez was the best man for the Anfield job. "I consider Rafa Benitez to be one of the best coaches in the world," said the Italian. "He has done a fantastic job and he has the quality to continue to do that job."
Fergie cold waters Owen’s WC dream
Michael Owen’s World Cup dream looks to have been KO’d after Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted he cannot play alongside Wayne Rooney. Owen is desperate to regain his place in the England squad for this year’s World Cup having joined United in a bid to impress England coach Fabio Capello. So far he has failed to cement a permanent starting position, with Fergie preferring Dimitar Berbatov. "We like to see Wayne Rooney going through the middle,” commented Fergie on Friday. "Everyone knows Michael is a last-defender player, there is none better than that - his movement and positional sense in the last third is excellent. It is difficult to play two directly through the middle in the modern game. Michael needs games and we are going to try to solve that problem as his training form has been good. It is just the blend of your strikers.”
Fab boost for Gunners
Cesc Fabregas is back to boost Arsenal’s title dreams. The 22-year-old Spaniard was injured last month and it was initially feared that he would only make a comeback in February. And with Aaron Ramsey joining fellow midfielder Denilson on the treatment table, and Alex Song on African Nations Cup duty, the news is a welcome boost for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger. "We are now into a period where we need to rotate. And that means, it's vitally important to have him back,” said Wenger on Friday. "Cesc is an exceptional player, a world-class player. He is a very intelligent player. We have a model here that is based on team play so it's always difficult for me to say: 'It's only about him.' But I believe we want the team to be the star here.” Fabregas has already scored 12 goals this season. Arsenal play Bolton on Sunday.
United welcome back calming force
Manchester United could welcome back veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar against Burnley on Saturday. The Dutch glovesman has been out since mid-November with knee knack and has also had to be with his wife Annemarie who suffered a stroke just before Christmas. But now the 39-year-old is ready to return after spending this week in Qatar with the team who were getting in some warm weather training. "Edwin has come back to training and has done very well," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Friday. "He has been out for a few weeks and it is great to see him back. He will give us so much experience when he eventually does come back, which is important to us." Given United’s much publicised defensive troubles in recent months, it looks likely that Van der Sar will be recalled in favour of Tomasz Kuszczak against Burnley.
Master manager wants EPL return and other transfer gossip
Guus Hiddink is dreaming of a return to the EPL with Liverpool. The Dutchman, who has enjoyed stellar managerial success with PSV Eindhoven, South Korea, Russia and Chelsea, has revealed that he would gladly step into the breach if current Reds boss Rafa Benitez is sacked. Watch this space! Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard is apparently unhappy with life at Liverpool and is pushing for a move to Real Madrid or AC Milan if things don't improve; Chelsea and Manchester City will fight it out for Palermo's 20-year-old centre-back Simon Kjaer; CSKA Moscow winger Milos Krasic has rejected an approach from Manchester City, saying he only wants to join Manchester United or Arsenal; and Spanish side Real Zaragoza have joined Bayern Munich, Cagliari and Atletico Madrid in the chase for Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos.

Bad to worse for Reds
Things are going from bad to worse for Liverpool after the club were rocked by the news that Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun will all spend time on the sidelines. The key trio, all injured in the Reds embarrassing FA Cup defeat to Reading on Wednesday, will spend varying degrees of time out. Star striker Fernando Torres is the most serious, requiring surgery to his knee, which will keep him out until the end of February. Gerrard will miss two weeks of action with a strained hamstring, while Benayoun has fractured a rib and will not play again for around four weeks.
Roon pricing himself out?
Wayne Rooney’s exorbitant contract demands may force Manchester United to sell their star striker. According to a report in The Sun newspaper on Thursday, the 24-year-old wants a five-year deal worth £140,000 a week, up from his current £90,000 a week. This is far more than what debt-riddled United can afford. Rooney apparently trails Rio Ferdinand in the pay stakes, despite being arguably the club’s most valuable player. Ferdinand allegedly earns £110,000 a week, which is what Cristiano Ronaldo was on prior to his move to Real Madrid. Real and fellow Spanish giants Barcelona are both waiting in the wings to pounce on Rooney should he fail to agree terms on a new contract at Old Trafford. Bidding is expected to start at £70m.
United sun it up in the East
Sir Alex Ferguson believes a little fun in the sun will help Manchester United get their title challenge back on track. The reigning EPL champions have stumbled in recent weeks with two losses and a draw in their last six matches, failing to take advantage of leaders Chelsea’s equally patchy form. So with England in the grip of their coldest weather in many years, the Red Devils have spent the past four days training in the sun of the Middle East. "With the weather being so good at this time of the year in Qatar, it was the perfect opportunity to test out the facilities there," said Fergie on Thursday. "We did some excellent training sessions that just would not have been possible in the conditions in the UK.” United play Burnley on Saturday, a team they suffered a shock loss against earlier this season.
Gunners are biggest threat – JT
EPL leaders Chelsea are more concerned with the threat of Arsenal than reigning champions Manchester United. According to Blues captain John Terry, the Gunners are the biggest danger to Chelsea regaining the title. Arsenal are just two points off the lead, six weeks after a crushing 3-0 loss to Chelsea at the Emirates had opened up an 11-point gap. Since then the Blues have won just three of six league matches while the Gunners have won five and drawn two of seven matches. "We cannot afford any more slip-ups,” said Terry on Thursday. "Thankfully the teams in and around us have been slipping up as well, but Arsenal are right back in the frame again. When we beat them 3-0 I thought they were out of it, to be honest.” Chelsea play Sunderland on Saturday while Arsenal travel to Bolton on Sunday.
Calamity James to Stoke and other transfer gossip
Veteran England goalkeeper David James is set to leave Portsmouth for Stoke on season-long loan. According to reports, James is desperate to quit crisis club Pompey as he fears that the club’s problems will damage his hopes of appearing at this year's World Cup. James has already fallen behind Ben Foster and Robert Green in the pecking order under Fabio Capello. Elsewhere, Liverpool want Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici, who played in the Royals' 2-1 FA Cup victory at Anfield on Wednesday; Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool are all chasing Racing Santander's 18-year-old striker Sergio Canales; Tottenham are keeping a close eye on midfielder Joe Cole's contract negotiations with Chelsea, and are ready to pounce if they stall; and Birmingham are considering a fresh approach for giant Red Bull Salzburg striker Marc Janko, who stand 1.95m in his boots.

Lamps takes the pee out of JT
Frank Lampard has shed light on John Terry’s obsession with superstitions. According to Lampard, his Chelsea and England team-mate has a host of pre-match rituals one which includes taking a wee in the right place! "I know John likes to have a wee in the right hand side urinal,” Lamps told Chelsea's in-house club magazine. "If I’m standing there and I’m ready to go but I see John coming up, I’ll move - you’ve got to have your captain right for the game!" Terry says: "It’s true. When the dressing room was installed, for some reason I could only go there. And the foreign lads don’t really get why I’m waiting behind them when there’s plenty of spaces elsewhere!" Terry apparently also insists on sitting in the same seat on the team bus, listening to the same CD and parking in the same spot in the club car park.
Reds finally get their man
Liverpool have completed the signing of Argentine international Maxi Rodriguez. The winger joins the EPL giants on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid. "He can play on the right, left or as a second striker," Reds manager Rafa Bentiez told the club’s official website on Wednesday. "He is good at getting into the box and is a good finisher. Every year he gets five to 15 goals from midfield." The 29-year-old Rodriguez is a close personal friend of Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano. Rodriguez is expected to be in the squad to take on Stoke on Saturday. "I think he will adapt to English football because he is a clever player. It is a question of adjusting to the pace of the game and he will need some time, but with these players around it will be easier for him," added Benitez.
Rafa to soldier on despite new setback
Beleaguered Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has vowed to fight on despite the club suffering another blow in what is turning into a nightmare season. The Reds were knocked out of the FA Cup on Wednesday after going down 2-1 (after extra-time) to Championship side Reading. "Everybody has been talking about me but I'll keep working hard with my team," Bentiez told the club's website. "From the beginning of the season we have been a little bit frustrated but we have to carry on. When you are in the race you need to keep going." The legendary club are also out of the Champions League and are currently 12 points adrift of EPL leaders Chelsea. They have lost a whopping 12 matches in all competitions this season and look likely to finish without a trophy for the fourth successive season.
City are the real deal - De Jong
Nigel de Jong is adamant Manchester City can win the EPL title this season. The inspirational Dutch midfielder’s comments come in the wake of City’s impressive rout of Blackburn on Monday which moved them up to fourth. "Of course the title is a possibility. Nothing is impossible," said De Jong on Wednesday. "The important thing is the Champions League place and trying to continue in that position. Then, we will see in March and April where we are standing." De Jong was also full of praise for Carlos Tevez, whose hat-trick against Blackburn took his goal tally to 15. "Carlos is on fire at the moment - I hope it will continue for the rest of the season," De Jong continued. "He had a hat-trick against Blackburn but he's unbelievable in every game. He makes players around him better. At the moment he's the best striker in the EPL."
Brazilian’s dream move to Spurs and other transfer gossip
Exciting midfielder Sandro claims his move to Tottenham is a "dream" come true. The 20-year-old sealed a £6m move from Internacional on Wednesday. Spurs fans will however only see him in action next season as the Brazilian will be loaned back to Internacional so that he can compete in the Copa Libertadores, which is South America's equivalent of the Champions League, in the summer. Elsewhere, Liverpool have made a shock offer for Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici, who played in the Royals 2-1 FA Cup victory at Anfield on Wednesday; Birmingham are chasing Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, after Liverpool forward Ryan Babel refused to move to St Andrews; Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan and Hull are all chasing £5m rated Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker; and former England manager Steve McClaren wants to take 18-year-old Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on loan to his FC Twente side in the Netherlands.

Big Sol set for return
Arsenal fans can expect to see club legend Sol Campbell back in their jersey soon. Speculation is rife that the 35-year-old former England defender will rejoin the Gunners after he played 45 minutes for their reserves against West Ham a few days back and is now expected to be offered a short-term contract by the club. "He has a fantastic attitude and good fitness," commented Gunners boss Arene Wenger last week. "Of course he is not the youngest, but he is in a very good shape. He can still play in the EPL. He is also important in the dressing room. He's positive with the young players.” Campbell spent five years at Arsenal between 2001-06 and won two EPL titles and three FA Cups with the club. He is expected to provide cover for Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas along with the 32-year-old Mikael Silvestre.
City give Ade time
Manchester City have given Emmanuel Adebayor time off to recover from the horror of the buss shooting at the African Cup of Nations. City’s start striker was on the Togo team bus that came under machine gun fire in Angola last week. Three people were killed and others were wounded. "We will speak to him when he returns," said City manager Roberto Mancini earlier this week. "Whenever he wants to play, whenever he feels ready, that is OK. At the moment, we are just very sorry for him. The situation is incredible." Adebayor is currently in Lome, the capital of Togo, for three days of official mourning following last Friday's attack. The 25-year-old is expected back in England later this week but is unlikely to play for City against Everton on Saturday. He has scored six EPL goals this season since joining City from Arsenal for £25m.
I’m not dirty – Fletch
Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has hit back at those who have ladled him a dirty player. The 25-year-old Scotsman was given his marching orders for two bookable offences during Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Birmingham on Saturday. "We needed to get stuck in against Birmingham and battle and that is what we did,” said Fletcher on Tuesday. "I didn't concern myself with any possible consequences. I am not a dirty player by any stretch of the imagination. I go in for the ball and sometimes I might mistime it and make a foul.” Fletcher has only been yellow-carded on three other occasions this season.
Reds to spend big – but not now!
Liverpool will spend big this summer! This is according to club co-owner Tom Hicks who was trying to reassure the club’s fan that their financial situation is better than portrayed in the media. "Our debt is manageable and we never use player sales for debt service. The new stadium will be the game-changer,” said Hicks in a message leaked to The Time newspaper. "January is a poor quality market. The summer window will be big. We know we need more depth on the squad and will address it this summer. We hope to have a stronger second half of the season." This comes in the wake of reports that the Reds will spend sparingly in the January transfer window, and any money raised through the sales of players will be saved for the summer. The club has already received around £6million from the sales of Andriy Voronin and Andrea Dossena.
Reds to annoy Gunners and other transfer gossip
Liverpool are set to beat Arsenal to Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh’s signature. The Moroccan is one of the most coveted strikers in Europe at the moment and has been on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s radar for some time. Liverpool are expected to launch an audacious £25m bid for Chamakh in January even though he is available on a free transfer at the end of the season. Elsewhere, 20-year-old Brazilian midfielder Sandro is set to complete a £6m move to Tottenham; AC Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini, who used to play for Arsenal, is being eyed by Tottenham; AC Milan are set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko; and Arsenal look to have beaten Everton to the signing of Real America's Bolivian attacking midfielder Samuel Galindo.

Aquilani ready to ‘smash the world’
New Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani believes the club are better off without Xabi Alonso, the player he was brought in to replace. The Reds paid £17m for Aquilani just a few days after Alonso was sold to Real Madrid. "Rafa Benitez and my team-mates have told me that before this season the whole Reds game went through Xabi,” claimed Aquilani on Sunday. "With me just in front of Javier Mascherano and Steven Gerrard just behind the front man, we now have even more solutions in midfield,” he added. The young Italian has only made two EPL starts this season due to a persistent ankle injury and the jury remains out on his true quality. The 25-year-old, however, insists he's now ready to help turn Liverpool's faltering season around. "I feel reborn and I want to smash the world.”
Spurs have EPL’s best squad – Kranjcar
Niko Kranjcar claims Tottenham have the resources to mount a sustained challenge not only for a Champions League place but also for the EPL title. The Croatian, a £2.5 summer signing from Portsmouth, has arguably been Spurs best player this season as they have surged to fourth place on the table, eight points behind leaders Chelsea. "We might have the best squad in the league,” said Kranjcar on Sunday. “Certainly we have a better squad than Liverpool. If you look through the 20 or so first-team squad players we currently have, we are very strong.” He insists that the unpredictable nature of this season means that no team can be written off at this stage. "If we take each game as it comes, go on a good run and come the end of February or March we are near the top spot, who knows?”
Berba set for op
Manchester United have been rocked by the news that striker Dimitar Berbatov requires knee surgery. The Bulgarian has been way below his best in recent months with some United fans even turning on him. The £30m striker played no in United's 1-1 draw with Birmingham on Saturday as they were unable to achieve the victory which would have taken them above Chelsea. "Dimitar wanted to play with it but we felt we should try to get it (the knee) sorted and get him fit again,” said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson afterwards. "He may have to have an exploratory operation,” he added. Should Berbatov be out for some time, it could mean that Michael Owen is finally given an extended run in the side in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup. Other options for United include Danny Wellbeck, Federico Marcheda, and new Senegal signing Mame Biram Diouf.
Wenger eyes the market
Arsene Wenger has not ruled out dipping into the transfer market this January. With Cameroon ace Alex Song away on African Nations Cup duty and Brazilian midfielder Denilson an injury worry, Wenger admitted he may go after a midfielder. "I said many times I have an open eye on the market and, if the right opportunities come up, we will do something. But, at the moment, I must say I'm still only looking,” admitted Wenger on Sunday. The wily manager, who is arguably the best spotter of talent in the EPL, also revealed that he was resigned to losing Spanish starlet Fran Merida, who is out of contract at the end of the season with Atletico Madrid leading the chase. “I am concerned about Merida, yes,” said Wenger."
Vidic’s future still in doubt and other transfer gossip
Manchester United central defender Nemanja Vidic continues to be linked with a £30m move to Real Madrid. According to reports, the Serbian international wants to finish his career in La Liga because he considers it the best league in the world. He and his wife are also said to prefer the warmer climate of Spain. United are reportedly lining up Everton's exciting 18-year-old Jack Rodwell and Porto’s Bruno Alves as replacements for Vidic. Elsewhere, Liverpool are back in the hunt for Real Madrid's Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, but only on six-month loan; Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is an admirer of Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy; Palermo defender Simon Kjaer has rejected a £12m move to Manchester City as he claiming he would rather join Manchester United; Birmingham are planning a £2m move for Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy; and Manchester United are lining up a £20m January move for Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Berba puzzles United coaches
Dimitar Berbatov’s miserable form for Manchester United is perplexing for the club’s management. The £30m Bulgarian has struggled to make an impact with the EPL champions since joining from Tottenham 18 months ago. Said a member of the club’s coaching staff on Sunday: "Berbatov is a real puzzle and a problem. He's so lacking in confidence that it's almost as if he's scared to go out and express himself. On the big occasions, somebody like Wayne Rooney grows in stature, but Berbatov hides away. He should have everything it takes to succeed and Fergie certainly believed in him, but it's just not working out." According to reports, the club are now weighing up whether to persist with Berbatov or to sell him to raise funds to make another bid to bring Karim Benzema to Old Trafford. Berbatov has scored just 20 goals in 66 appearances for United.
Red Devils set for massive clear-out
Reigning EPL champions Manchester United are set for a overhaul in the close season. According to reports out of England, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has lost patience with many of his under-performing stars and wants to sell them on in order to raise funds for a massive splurge in the transfer market. The players earmarked for the door include Dimitar Berbatov, Anderson, Nani and Zoran Tosic and unsettled central defender Nemanja Vidic. If Fergie sells, it will signal the biggest overhaul of a United squad since 1995 when he dumped Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis, Mark Hughes to make way for the ‘Golden Generation’ of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers. Berbatov cost United £30m, Anderson £18m, Nani £16m and Tosic £7m but they will be sold for far less than that. Vidic, however, is expected to fetch £20m.
I’m better now – Vieira
New Manchester City signing Patrick Vieira believes he is a better player now than he was when he left the EPL in 2005. The 33-year-old midfielder has been playing in Serie A for the past four-and-a-half -years with many questioning his wisdom in returning to a league where the pace is much higher than in Italy. Vieira, however, thinks his time away has improved him as a player. "I am a better player for the experiences I have had," said Vieira on Sunday. "You get better with experience and age and I have been really lucky to play at big clubs. I have learned a lot around big-name players and I have come back to the EPL a better player than I used to be." The former Arsenal captain will make his City debut on Monday against Blackburn if he recovers from a calf strain.
Reds could sell star duo – Rafa
Rafael Benitez has finally uttered words Liverpool fans have long been dreading! On Sunday the Spaniard admitted that the club may have to sell star duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres if the club’s financial position does not improve. "We would have a conversation and decide what's best for the club," said Benitez, who admitted Liverpool do not have the resources to turn down world record bids. "I've said before I want to keep the best players here because that means we can be closer to the top four. They are the most important. If you ask any manager in the world they will tell you they want more money and want to spend but at this moment we have to do what's best for the club. That means managing the situation for each player and see what happens."
Aguero to EPL and other transfer gossip
Atletico Madrid are believed to have offered to sell Argentine striker Sergio Aguero to Chelsea for £30m, providing they can have the striker back on loan for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old is one of the most promising hitmen in world football and is the son-in-law of legend Diego Maradona. Elsewhere, Russian club Rubin Kazan's Argentine left-back Cristian Ansaldi is set to complete a £6m move to Manchester City; City are also closing in on a £7m deal for Portsmouth's 24-year-old centre-back Younes Kaboul; Chelsea have entered the race to sign German striker Kevin Kuranyi, but the 27-year-old Schalke striker has also held talks with Sunderland; and Manchester United are interested in signing West Ham's £10m-rated Swiss midfielder Valon Behrami, Juventus, Arsenal and Manchester City have also shown interest in the former Lazio star.

I’m fit to wear United shirt – Anderson
Anderson claims he is “fit to wear a Manchester United shirt.” According to a report in The Sun newspaper on Saturday, the Brazilian admits to not fulfilling his potential since his £18m move from Porto in 2007 but insists his best is still to come. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in my performance at United. In fact it makes me sad,” the 21-year-old is quoted as saying. "And one of my first objectives is to get back to the condition I was in at Porto, then start scoring goals which decide matches because that's vital for any player's career.” The Brazilian has scored one goal in 96 appearances for United despite arriving at the club as a “goal scoring” midfielder.
Vieira ready to knock United – again!
Patrick Vieira has vowed to knock Manchester United off their perch just as he did at Arsenal. The Frenchman managed to win three EPL titles in nine years with the Gunners before moving to Italy. Now back in English football with Manchester City, the 33-year-old midfielder is keen for history to repeat itself. "I have beaten them before with Arsenal and, yes, I believe I can do it with City now, this season,” said Vieira on Saturday. "We have got a team who can fight for the title. When you look at the players the club's got, I strongly believe we are not out of the race to win the title.” He also claims the Red Devils do not look as strong as in previous years. "They are not dominating like they used to. United used to be top and so many points clear. That is no longer the case.”
Fergie insists it was a goal
Sir Alex Ferguson insists the referee was correct to award Manchester United their goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham. The goal, an own goal by Scott Dann, was initially ruled out for an offside against Wayne Rooney but after consulting with his assistant, referee Mark Clattenburg overturned the decision. "It's an obvious own goal and the referee had to allow it. I don't know what the linesman thought," said Fergie afterwards. Television replays showed Rooney was just onside when Patrice Evra struck the initial shot that deflected off Dann. Ferguson was also unhappy at Clattenburg's decision to send off Darren Fletcher. The midfielder was cautioned for a rash challenge on Lee Bowyer but a later foul on Cameron Jerome that earned him a second yellow looked less clear-cut. "Darren's not that type of player," Ferguson said. "I thought it was a terribly soft sending-off, he's barely clipped him.
Wenger relieved with point
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed his players for snatching a point in injury-time against Everton on Saturday. The Gunners fought back to draw 2-2 despite not being at their best. "It is two points dropped in the title race, but in this game it was one point gained,” said Wenger afterwards. "Everton played very well, while we were off the pace. Our passing was too slow and not incisive enough." Arsenal twice came from behind but will rue the fact that they failed to win in order to put pressure on title rivals Chelsea and Manchester United. Earlier Leon Osman opened the scoring for Everton, before Denilson equalised in the 28th minute. South African Steven Pienaar put the Toffees back in front in the 81st minute before Tomas Roscicky fired home a 92nd equaliser.
Blues chase Bosnian wonder and other transfer gossip
Chelsea have been linked with a big-money move for 1.93m tall Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian international, who was the top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, is valued at £36m. The 23-year-old scored 26 goals for the club as they surprisingly won the German title. Elsewhere, Tottenham will only allow Robbie Keane to leave if someone offers a whopping (and highly unlikely) £50m for him; Manchester City are keen on signing Crystal Palace's £5m-rated 19-year-old striker Victor Moses, who is also wanted by Barcelona; and Sunderland insist striker Kenwyne Jones is not for sale despite Birmingham weighing up an £11m bid for the Trinidad & Tobago star.

An EPL legend returns!
Manchester City have completed the signing of France midfielder Patrick Vieira from Inter Milan. The 33-year-old, who passed a medical on Thursday, becomes City boss Roberto Mancini's first signing since he replaced Mark Hughes in December. Said Mancini on the club’s official website: "Patrick is a world class midfielder with a winner's mentality and will fit into this group very well." Mancini has already signed Vieira before, in 2006 when he was manager of Inter Milan. "He knows me and my staff well, and importantly he also knows what the EPL is all about," Mancini added. "He will not need much time to settle in.” Vieira brought his first spell in English football to an end when he left Arsenal for Juventus in 2005 after nine years at the London club. He later joined Inter where he won three Serie A titles.
Fergie scoffs at spending squeeze
Sir Alex Ferguson has laughed off suggestions that money is tight at Manchester United because of their massive debts. According to reports, the fact that the club have only spent £20m of the world record £80m fee received from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo suggests Fergie is under a spending squeeze. The fiery Scot, however, claims he is not spending because there is no value in the market."We have got the money. There is no question about that," said Ferguson on Friday. "I just don't see that player who can make a difference for us in terms of value or ability." United have bought in January in the past with Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Louis Saha and Andy Cole all arriving for big money at the turn of the year.
Italian ace rejects Blues link
Star Italian striker Vincenzo Iaquinta has poured cold water on rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea. Reports in Italy and England have suggested the Blues are weighing up a move for the Juventus forward in this month's transfer window as they look for cover for Didier Drogba while he is away at the African Cup of Nations. "I'm flattered by market rumours, but I'm interested only in Juventus," Iaquinta told the club's official website. "I feel good here and I don't want to leave.” The Italian international, who has just returned from injury, continued: "I believe in this club. We are convinced that we still have possibilities to do well and for this reason market rumours should not distract us from our sporting objectives." The 30-year-old Iaquinta is valued at £30m. He has played 35 times for the Italian national team.
‘Operation Cesc’
Real Madrid have dubbed their efforts to prise Cesc Fabregas away from Arsenal 'Operation Cesc'. This is according to The Sun newspaper, who claim Real president Florentino Perez and club director general Jorge Valdano are plotting a £43million bid for the star midfielder. They are also eager to knock bitter rivals Barcelona out of the running for the Arsenal skipper. Barca on the other hand have vowed "to fight for the kid" who played for the club as a teenager. Arsenal are allegedly willing to talk if Real's £25m-rated striker Gonzalo Higuain is thrown into any deal.
Sol back to Emirates and other transfer gossip
Sol Campbell could make a shock return to Arsenal, but only if the club sells Swiss misfit Philippe Senderos in the January transfer window. Campbell has been training with Arsenal since quitting Notts County earlier this season. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger sees the 35-year-old as cover for Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas. Campbell spent five years at Arsenal from 2001-06 and was part of their ‘Invincibles’ team of 2004. Elsewhere, Manchester City are on the verge of signing Argentine defender Cristian Ansaldi for £4m from Rubin Kazan; Liverpool have entered the race to sign Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, who is also wanted by Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham; former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, who is now at Monaco, is closing in on a £2m move to Blackburn; and Birmingham want to make Kenwyne Jones the club's highest earner if he can lure him from Sunderland.

Vieira’s return almost guaranteed
Patrick Vieira’s return to the EPL is almost guaranteed after it emerged that he underwent a medical at Manchester City on Thursday. Ambitious City hope to complete the signing of the 33-year-old midfielder by Friday. New City manager Roberto Mancini signed Vieira when he was in charge of Inter Milan. A former Arsenal captain, Vieira moved to Juventus for £14m in 2005 after nine years at the London club. He later transferred to Inter where he won two Serie A titles under Mancini in 2007 and 2008. Vieira claims that his sole purpose in moving to City is to win a place in the France squad for the 2010 World Cup. The 1.9m central-midfielder won the last of his 107 international caps in a friendly against Nigeria in August. He played more than 400 appearances for Arsenal, winning three league titles and four FA Cups.
Fergie set to unleash African sensation
Sir Alex Ferguson is on the verge of handing Mame Biram Diouf his Manchester United debut. Such has been the Senegal striker’s impressive form in training that Fergie is contemplating unleashing the 22-year-old against Birmingham on Saturday. He has been given the number 32 shirt formerly worn by Carlos Tevez. "He has adapted very well to our training regime and has looked very impressive," Ferguson told Inside United. "He is quick, very good in the air and a good striker of the ball. Overall, he is a really good centre-forward and he will play a part this season." Diouf signed for United from Norwegian club Molde in June. He was loaned back to the club and only came to Old Trafford in November after problems securing a work permit.
Pep’s the best – Torres
Fernando Torres has hailed his Liverpool teammate Pep Reina as the best goalkeeper in the world. Reina has been one of few Liverpool players to consistently produce high standards this season. "Like always he's having a really good season. For me he's now the best keeper in the world," said Torres of his fellow Spanish international on Thursday. "In Spain everyone knows he's a very good keeper and in England there is no doubt he is the best. He's played at a top level since he signed here and won many Golden Gloves (for the most clean sheets) - and hopefully he'll win one more this season." Torres has also hailed Reina's influence in the dressing room. "After Gerrard and Carragher, I think he's the most important. He's always happy, not just on the pitch but in the dressing room. Reina joined Liverpool from La Liga team Villareal in 2005.
Reds turn down offer for Kop flop
Liverpool have turned down an £8m offer from Birmingham for Ryan Babel. The Reds bought the 23-year-old Dutch winger from Ajax for £11.5m in July 2007 but he has struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot at Anfield. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has publicly insisted Babel is not for sale and turned down Ajax's attempt to take him on loan in January 2009. The Dutch international has made three starts in 10 EPL appearances this season. The speedy winger has scored five times in 37 international matches for the Netherlands but is in danger of missing out on their World Cup squad due to a lack of first team action at Liverpool.
Champions chase French starlet and other transfer gossip
Manchester United are hot on the heels of talented French winger Hatem Ben Arfa. The Red Devils will however have to come up with a whopping £40m to prise him away from current club Marseille. Ben Arfa is one of the hottest talents playing in France at the moment. Elsewhere, cash-strapped Portsmouth have put their entire squad up for sale; Manchester City are expected to land Palermo centre-half Simon Kjaer for £18m, much to the annoyance of Manchester United who have been tracking the Danish international for some time; and Arsenal are tracking CFR Cluj's 1.98m Ivorian striker Lacine Traore – who has been dubbed 'The New Adebayor'.

Neville set to call time
Manchester United legend Gary Neville is set to hang up his boots in May. According to a report in The Sun newspaper, the 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and will not be offered a new one. Neville has been hit by a series of injuries over the last two years. His fellow Red Devils veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have been offered new one-year deals by the club. Neville has played 583 first-team games for United in an 18-year career at Old Trafford.
Vieira’s legs are gone – Gunners legend
Patrick Vieira does not have the legs for a return to the EPL. This is according to Arsenal legend Lee Dixon who is a former team-mate of Vieira. The 33-year-old Vieira has been in negotiations with Manchester City about a possible switch back to England from Inter Milan. "It's 4½ years since he left Arsenal, he's 33 and if you are asking, 'Can he play at the top level' then I wouldn't think he'd play every week," Dixon told BBC Radio on Wednesday. "He gets a few little niggles and hasn't got a classically fit footballer's body, where you know he's an athlete who can go on and on. He always needed a long time to recover after games, longer than some of the older lads.” Dixon played alongside Vieira for six years at Arsenal. Vieira played under new City manager Roberto Mancini for three seasons at Inter.
Fergie’s Maldini shoot down
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he once tried to sign Italian football legend Paolo Maldini but was firmly rebuffed by the defender’s father. Paolo is the son of former AC Milan and Italy manager Cesare. Said Ferguson on Wednesday: "I always wanted to get Paolo here but it was impossible. I met his father at a game and told him how much I'd love to have his son at United. Cesare smiled at me and said 'My grandfather was Milan, my father was Milan, I played for Milan and now my son is Milan'.And that was it - story over!" Paolo Maldini spent his entire 25 season career with Milan, eventually retiring at the age of 40.
Meagre Reds spending ahead
Liverpool won’t be spending big in the January transfer window. According to reports, the club’s embattled manager Rafa Bentitez will only be allowed to spend a paltry £1.5m on Argentine winger Maxi RodrÃguez. Any money raised from the selling of players will go towards easing the club’s large debt. Benitez is expected to offload Andrea Dossena to Napoli for £4.5m, Andriy Voronin to Dynamo Moscow in a £2m deal, while another £2m will be received when Philipp Degen transfers, most probably to Stuttgart. Ryan Babel, meanwhile, is reported to be a target of Birmingham, with Liverpool reported to have been offered £8m for the Dutch forward. The news is bound to spark further criticism of Liverpool’s American owners.
Veron snubs City and other transfer gossip
Juan Sebastien Veron has turned down a mega-money move to Manchester City. According to report’s, Veron’s current club Estudiantes of Argentina were offered £7m for the 35-year-old, with the same amount going straight into the pocket of Veron. "I talked to Mancini, but it's not possible now, it's not about money. First comes my family and second it's because I made a decision and I want to respect it," said Veron, who played alongside City boss Roberto Mancini at Sampdoria and Lazio. Elsewhere, Arsenal will launch a £9m move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole if Nicklas Bendtner fails a fitness test on Friday; Arsenal, Man United and Man City are battling it out for Cardiff City's 17-year-old defender Adam Matthews, who is seen as one of the best prospects outside the EPL; and Tottenham have renewed their interest Sporting Lisbon defender Miguel Veloso.

Hulk in no rush
Manchester United must be patient if they want to sign Porto striker Hulk. The Red Devils have been keeping a close eye on the muscular striker ever since he impressed against them in last season’s Champions League. But according to his agent, Hulk wants “stability” ahead of next season’s World Cup in South Africa. "Inclusion in Brazil's World Cup squad is the most important thing,” said Teodoro Fonseca on Wednesday. "If he gets in, it could act as a gateway to England for him and that is what we want." United are ready to offer Porto £20m for the 23-year-old, whose real name is Givanildo Vieira de Souza.
Blues will survive – Didi
Ace striker, and the EPL’s top scorer this season, Didier Drogba is confident Chelsea will not miss him during the African Nations Cup. Drogba and fellow Africans Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel will miss Chelsea’s January matches as they will be playing in the African continental showpiece. Despite his sparkling form this season, Drogba insists Carlo Ancelotti's men are more than capable of coping without them. "I'm confident the team can win without us,” Drogba told Zoo Media magazine."I'll be looking out for our results while I'm away and there will be some phone calls if we drop points! But I don't think they will have a problem. We have a strong squad and we still have Nicolas Anelka to score the goals." The Cote d’Ivoire international has scored 18 goals this season.
New contract for Gunners injury crock
Despite suffering 18 months of injury hell, Arsenal have offered midfielder Tomas Rosicky a new contract. The 29-year-old Czech international joined the club in May 2006 and has made 76 appearances, netting 14 goals. Successions of knee and hamstring injuries have hampered his time at the Emirates. "I am so pleased to have signed a new contract. The last two seasons haven't been easy for me because of injuries," said Rosicky on Wednesday. "I feel it speaks volumes about the club's belief in me for this to be signed, and I truly believe I have a lot left to offer the club, my team-mates and all the supporters." Gunners boss Arsene Wenger hailed the player. "I have spoken many times of Tomas' class and contribution, not only on the pitch but off it as well, and I very much feel that this new contract reflects that,” commented Wenger.
