United to offload young striker?

Sunderland are chasing the signature of young Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck. The talented 19-year-old failed to make an expected break-through at Old Trafford last season, playing second fiddle to Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Bernatov and Michael Owen. He was eventually loaned out to Preston North End to gain experience but his spell was cut short by injury. The Red Devils have now also signed young Mexican striker Javier Hernadez as well as Senegal international Mame Biram Diouf which means Welbeck’s chances of playing in the first team will be significantly affected. “Steve Bruce has stated that Welbeck is somebody he would certainly like to have in the squad, but Manchester United are in the States at the moment for another couple of weeks, so I don't imagine it will happen in the next week or two,” admitted Sunderland Assistant Manager Eric Black on Friday.
