Reds suffer double transfer snub and other red-hot gossip

(01-09-2010) Liverpool suffered the embarrassment of having bids for two players turned down on the transfer deadline day. According to reports, the Reds lost out on Carlton Cole despite offering Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva and Dutch forward Ryan Babel in exchange for the West Ham striker because both Leiva and Babel refused to leave Anfield. To make matters worse they also failed to lure Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko to Merseyside! Elsewhere, Manchester United and Rangers have launched a stringent security operation to prevent crowd trouble when they meet in the Champions League on 14 September; Chelsea skipper John Terry will miss England's upcoming European Championship qualifying games due to a hamstring injury that dates back to the World Cup; and Newcastle defender Sol Campbell was taunted by Sunderland supporters for being overweight as he made his debut for the Magpies in a reserve match on Tuesday night.
