Becks gutted by WC bid failure

(03-12-2010) David Beckham reckons England did everything they could in the contest to host the 2018 World Cup. On Thursday Russia were announced as the hosts of the tournament in eight years time with fellow bidders England picking up just two of the 22 FIFA executive committee votes in what amounted to a dismal defeat. "When you put so much work into something and you don't get anything from it, then it is crushing,” said Becks after the announcement. "A lot of people have done a lot of hard work and we deserve to host the World Cup. Let's hope we get it at some point.” He added: "The way we presented our country was exceptional. I think we would have put on one of the best World Cups in history."
