Scandalous fumes Harry
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has blasted his team after they conceded two goals in eleven seconds against Arsenal on Saturday. "We committed suicide. All three goals were scandalous, there wasn't a good goal amongst them," fumed Redknapp after the 3-0 defeat. "Giving Cesc Fabregas the ball from the kick-off was Sunday morning football," added Redkanpp. Goals from Robin van Persie and Fabregas, three minutes before halftime set Arsenal up for a comfortable win, putting paid to suggestions that Spurs had a squad that was capable of competing with their fierce north London neighbours.
DD is the world’s best – Lamps
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has heaped praise on team-mate Didier Drogba calling the burly Ivorian the best striker in the world. This comes after Chelsea’s impressive 4-0 demolition of Bolton on Saturday. Drogba scored his 10th goal of the season in the match while Nicolas Anelka terrorised his former club with a man-of-the-match display. "He's neck and neck with Fernando Torres in the goals chart, but for me Didier is the best in the world because of his all-round game," commented Lampard. "He does not always get the credit he deserves for his finishing, and that is different class. He is not just interested in scoring goals, although he does it very well. He wants to make goals, work hard for the team, head stuff out of his own box."
Red Devils sweat on Rio
Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of star central defender Rio Ferdinand after a scan on his persistent back injury suggested he could be out for eight weeks. Ferdinand failed to feature in United’s 2-0 win over Blackburn on Saturday. The injury has badly affected his pace and he has been found wanting on numerous occasions this season. Now, according to the club’s medical team, only rest and intensive treatment can save the England defender’s United career. United fans can however rest easy, safe in the knowledge that in Jonny Evans they have one of the most composed young centre-backs in the EPL to partner Nemanja Vidic. Wes Brown is also a capable stand-in. A fully fit Ferdinand, however, remains one of the best central defenders in world football.
A win is a win – Berba
Dimitar Berbatov has praised his teammates for digging deep against Blackburn on Saturday as Manchester United grinded out a 2-0 win at Old Trafford. The Red Devils spurned numerous chances to put the game beyond doubt before Wayne Rooney and Berbatov popped up to score to secure the points. "One-nil is good as well as long as you get the three points. Two-nil, four-nil, it doesn't matter — as long as we keep on winning I think everyone will be happy," said the Bulgarian after another unimpressive performance by the reigning EPL champions. "In the first half, I had a couple of chances to score — you need to be patient and when another chance comes, you need to score it." Berbatov has now scored three league goals this season, while Rooney has netted six times. The win keeps United in second place two points behind Chelsea.
Gunners leave Wenger purring
Arsene Wenger was in a bullish mood after Arsenal’s impressive 3-0 win over Tottenham in the north London derby on Saturday. Talk before the game was of Spurs closing the gap on their neighbours but the possibility of a win against the Gunner’s was effectively over when Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas struck within a minute of each other just before the break. "Do we have enough? I say yes," crowed Wenger. "I've said that since the first day of the season and it won't change now. We want to show consistency and intelligence and that is not easy. I believe we have the opportunity and it will be down to our attitude." Van Persie grabbed a second goal late on as Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to eleven matches. The result leaves Arsenal five points behind leaders Chelsea but with a game in hand.
Rafa rants as Reds see red
Rafa Benitez blasted referee Lee Mason after 9-man Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Fulham on Saturday. Swiss defender Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher received their marching orders within three minutes of each other during the second half as the Reds crashed to their sixth defeat in their last seven matches, a run that has Benitez facing the sack. "The first one was a yellow card. The second one you can clearly see that Carragher was kicking the ball," fumed Benitez. "It's hard to take the defeat, especially when we were in control of the game. The first half was one-sided. We made one mistake and we conceded a goal. The second half they were more offensive and we made a massive mistake when we conceded the second goal. We worked hard with nine players but it was very difficult." Liverpool now trail leaders Chelsea by nine points.
Another striker for City and other transfer rumours
Thierry Henry could be on his to Eastlands in the January transfer window to add to Manchester City’s already vast array of attacking talent. According to reports, the Frenchman has fallen out with Barcelona coach Pep Guordiola and wants to leave the Nou Camp. This has alerted Mark Hughes who wants to add Henry to a strikeforce that already includes Emmanuel Adebayor (£25m), Craig Bellamy (£14m), Roque Santa Cruz (£17.5m), Benjani (£3.8m), Robinho (£32.5m) and Carlos Tevez (£47m). How Hughes will accommodate all these players is anyone’s guess! Elsewhere, Sunderland are tracking Wigan's Maynor Figueroa, Wigan are lining up Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo, Chelsea want Le Mans right back Sebastien Corchia, and Everton have put out feelers about a loan move for Inter Milan winger Ricardo Quaresma.
